  • What exactly are the licenses for? I thought adguard was a self hosted thing but it appears they have more now…
From what I can tell this appears to be an app related thing but it’s not clear what you get out of it

    • Yeah wondering as well. Seems cheap but want to know what's the equivalent link/product on their website so I can compare

    • For the windows, mac, android, ios apps (see the links top of this page under "Products")

      https://adguard.com/en/adguard-windows/overview.html

I use AdGuard Home as DNS at home but when I'm on the road I use the apps - helped when I used public wifi at a hospital recently (so I had no control over their DNS), but was still able to block ads

Why not just wireguard into your home network? Your wireguard tunnel will hit your adguard DNS and block ads.

If you're running adguard home you have a sever to run wireguard on. Save yourself some money and have the added benefit of accessing your local network when out and about.

I have both WG and openvpn at home and on a few VPSes, however WG and openvpn blocked on their public wifi.

I was so used to having all ads blocked it was a bit of shock seeing them again and it annoyed me after a few days so bought the apps on sale, was worth it for my sanity.

          • @bdl: How are they blocking it? It's tunneled to your IP over a port you specified. I can see them blocking the default port but if you've changed it there's no way your tunnel for adguard works and the tunnel for wireguard on your home server doesn't?

            • @SubNoize: From what I was seeing they were blocking all ports and only whitelisting certain ports - I guess 80/443 (I already had openvpn and wg on non standard ports but they weren't letting those through). I had no remote access to my servers to re-config the ports from that connection so when i tested adguard and it worked i went with that.

Most public wifi, I have no problems using my home/vps vpns but there was something quirky about this hospital one (and tbh I cbf figuring it out because I was pretty out of it from surgery)

          • @bdl: What about nextdns? It is free for 300,000 queries/month. Only use it when you are out?

            • @4kbargain: In my particular case it wasn't allowing any dns except what it was providing.

On less restrictive connections I use @SubNoize's suggestion and just use my own hosted adguard (homes) instances and/or just nextdns/adguard ad blocking DNS to my openvpn clients

Using the five pack on special I also used a couple of the licenses for family members (non IT literate) who like the one big button they can toggle for adblocking whilst out (they seemed to remember toggle on/off adguard when needed where as trying to get them to do the same for openvpn/wg clients never seemed to click…and leaving wg on was draining battery :( )

              • @bdl: Is WG a big drain on battery? I do split tunnel so DNS is from self hosted adguard home but the rest of the traffic goes through normal phone mobile data. I haven't felt WG being a big drain but I dunno if it was the split tunnel helping.

Pihole at home, then Wireguard VPN back to home does the same thing.

        • Not if the connection blocks the wg vpn

          • +1

@bdl: sometimes have to turn it off, so to connect past their "logon" page, then seems always to work after that for me.

Not that i've done this often, mostly use mobile data but some places that has not been available…

@AdModnar: FWIW I'm using Tailscale more and more now and set that up after I got home to avoid a recurrence of the situation I found myself in :)

Lots of ways to skin the cat but the Adguard apps did work well when I had a particular use case that needed them. The fact that my family members are now conscious of (and autonomous in) blocking ads also was a added benefit I believe.

The team have three main products I know of

Adguard Home - local networking DNS based blocking, similar to PiHole. Free to use but you’ll need a PC or Server to be running 24/7 to host it. If you want ti be able to use it away from home you need to know a bit about what you’re doing to configure the remote access in a secure manner.

Adguard browser extension - web browser based blocking similar to uBlock etc. Might capture some things a DNS based blocker won’t. Also free

Adguard Pro - device based blocking. Believe this will also be DNS based but it runs for all traffic on your device rather than just the web browser. May be easier to use for many people compared to AdGuard home for use cases where you aren’t in your network. Because it’s blocking traffic across the entire device, this can block ads in mobile apps etc.

May also be cheaper to just get this licenses if you don’t already have and run a PC 24/7 (electricity costs adds up).

I use Adguard Home myself in conjunction with a different companies browser extension. I do think their products are pretty decent.

      • AdGuard Pro is more than just DNS filtering, allows device-wide blocking using standard ad-blocking filter lists so it can do everything uBlock can do + some other stuff like device-wide userscripts.

    • I do use Adguard home as well but for me App has more features. Some of them are:
      1. Easy to use and available outside your home network without technical knowledge.
      2. Options for DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS especially DNS-over-QUIC which is best among all and only available on paid app as far as I know.
      3. App also act as firewall so you can block apps from internet access completely or block them when screen is off.

  • If you have Merlin running on your ASUS router I strongly recommend DIVERSION and Skynet - Free

  • Amazing find! 5 stars.
The Aus site is showing $99 for the lifetime (up to 9 licenses)

I've been running Adguard on all of my devices for years. Definitely worth the payment: it completely transforms the experience of being online. Having an app per device has advantages over a central network proxy or a browser extension. I have a technical background (former Linux systems and network admin) but I still prefer the app over anything else. I even keep extra licences up my sleeve to use as my family gets more devices in the future.

    • If buying 2, does that mean up to 18 devices?

      • That's how it works for me. I've got 2 family licences (9 devices each) plus a personal licence (4 devices), for a total of 22 devices on the same account.

        • Can you remove a device ? Just thinking I'll eventually upgrade phone etc

          • @bisaya: Yes, I have added and removed devices over time. It's easy to manage through your account online.

I purchased it thinking I could use it on my iPhone.
I couldn’t log into the app so I went to cancel and applied for a refund.
They replied very quickly and said that I had already retrieved the code and therefore it couldn’t be done.
I retrieved the code thinking this would be what’s needed to activate the app.

    • I'm confused, you can use it on iPhone can't you?

      • Yes it works perfectly on iPhone and iPad

step 2 here to activate: https://kb.adguard.com/en/ios/solving-problems/premium-activ…

        • Finally got it to work.

Step 2 didn’t quite work “ You'll be asked to enter your AdGuard Personal account credentials. After you do, if you have any valid license key in your account, it will be automatically picked up to activate Premium in your AdGuard for iOS app”

But the next paragraph that said, alternatively, you can put your valid license key in the e-mail field, worked.

But for me, it should have stated that there are 3 options and not 2, hence not reading any further down as I kept trying to apply options 1 & 2.

This was a new experience for me as I have never ever had to “login” to anything where it specifically asks for email and password (which didn’t work) where you put the licence key in the field for the email section and nothing in the password.

In the login section they could have had email address and password, and below that have another option that says “or” enter your license key in the box.

          Anyway finally got it sorted.

Also for me on a personal note as I’m not that tech savvy, but I find eg. Nord VPN Not only blocks ads on Safari and other websites, but it’s also blocks apps with ads, which is a big plus.

I realise reading few posts up, there are other advantages or uses of this app that I’m not familiar with and need to increase my knowledge on.

          • @Timetraveler: may i ask how you add the license code?
in the iphone app, do you click the top right Log In?
when i did that, only 4 options available to login
            Use AdGuard account
            Continue with apple
            Continue with Google
            Continue with Facebook

            • @artxty: Correct, go to “login” top right

              Then click “Use AdGuard Account”

Where it says “email” & “password”, clink on “email” and put in your “license key” in.

StackSocial should have sent an email that contains a green box with the words “Redeem Your Purchases” written in it.

That’s takes you back into your login page to your account you created in StackSocial.

Once you’re logged in (if you haven’t already done so) you’ll find your license key.

Remember put license key only in the email box.
Leave password empty and click login.

I had the same problem as you.

      • @simplycurious,

        Yes, sorry for the confusion.

  • Already got adguard home built into GL inet router.

But this adguard software is still good for blocking certain domains, from windows, androids

    • oh I didn't realise you could run adguard on gl inet - did you install it via LUCI?

      • No it was already on there (Flint) But there VPN combo is CRAP like TOTAL CRAP honestly

  • It seems 30.98$ USD for me.

After you add the code? Should be cheaper

  • Yep done now, forgot to do that thanks

    • +1

Don’t forget to use a US address so there is no extra charges like tax, as OP mentioned.

      • +1

damn i forgot that bit lol

        • I wish I had of seen your post earlier, sorry.

  • Damn, forgot to put in discount code! I was in a rush

    • You can apply for refund if you didn't claim your code yet.

      • Already claimed. Thanks anyway
