  • They also come in 4 pack now?

  • How easy is it to install this by yourself?

    • Battery/wireless so very easy, just need to mount it on something. But also need to charge batteries and I probably wouldn't trust it in a direct sun hot area. If it was wired version you would need an electrician for power in Australia.

Better to go with JB, stack with discounted gift cards as well

  • Are people at all worried about mounting these outside? I've heard they are a huge theif magnet now. Probably bringing more problems than they are worth

Edit: guessing this is a must?

Had mine outside covering our driveway for 12+ months - no issues. I did buy the power cable so its recording 24/7, not just detected events. Google will replace your camera if stolen, if you provide a police report

      • Ouch for 4x cameras those power cables will add $200.

How does this constant record without poe, just all via wifi?

        • +1

I have a few on outdoor power cables and a few in low traffic areas on battery. They all work via 2.4Ghz wifi only, no 5Ghz. 24/7 recording is good but its $180/year. If you want motion triggered event recording which I have, its $90 a year. If you pay for the lower tier like I do and still have power cables connected, the advantage is the camera does not go to idle or stop recording after certain time eg. (30 seconds, 1 minute etc. to save the battery). Motion detection on these cameras is excellent, if they are powered, they start to record few seconds before motion is detected anyway so you don't lose first few seconds like on battery mode. I think they always record, but only save on the cloud during motion which is why you don't lose on the first few seconds on motion only tier - as long as they are powered.

          • @MKBHD: Thanks for the further explanation binary.

Shame about the subscription model based nature of these

      • I thought they only replaced a stolen doorbell. Are you sure they cover cameras too?

  • Are there any features locked behind the subscription?

    • +1

There is a 'smart faces' or something that will alert you about a 'specific' person rather than just any person. ie it recognises who they are. That is with subscription only, all the other features I believe are included subscription fee.

TBH though, without subscription they are a bit pointless. It stores 3hr of video only. I thought that would be heaps, recording 90sec at a time. But they will only keep a recording for 3hrs. So if it records at 1pm, that 90sec recording will no longer be viewable after 4pm. At least with the subscription it will be viewable for 30 days I think.

The Google help centre lists battery cam as replaceable if stolen.

All in all they are overpriced, but convenient and decent quality.
