Ok…so I'm posting this so someone will benefit and I don't feel so bad about not purchasing it myself (i have spent enough on this hobby and don't need to add this)…although I so want to! Bargain for this star tracker. Check the specs yourself, but for those that want one of these and know it, I don't think its ever been cheaper or ever will. Also for the other astrophotographers, SVBONY SV405CC DSO Cooled Camera https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175509791196 with sony imx294 sensor. I'm not looking for upticks so if my post isn't perfect, I can't be bothered editing. For those of you loving the night sky, I hope you get to buy.

Do you have any telescope recommendations for a beginner?

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Skywatcher-6-Dobsonian/dp/B07L9JXX…
      or
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Celestron-31045-AstroMaster-Reflec…

usually quite a bit cheaper 2nd / facebook market, etc

unfortunately, telescopes is one of those things that require a minimum level of quality to be worth while, as below that minimum will be worse than nothing.

      • astromaster is trash, spherical mirror, plastic optics. Avoid celestron's cheap scopes

how long do you have? haha. this can just be used with a normal camera for wide-field shots probably good to 300mm. thats probably what its best for. If you are looking at getting into deepsky you'd probably want a goto mount. It all starts with what you'd like to do. visual, astrophotography, planetary, deepsky etc. this is a good and very affordsable way to take some great night shots and use free software to produce some pretty amazing shots.

    • I would not recommend a beginner to purchase an equatorial mount telescope.
They are focused on astrophotography, not really suitable for visual purposes unless you are planning to purchase a dedicated camera and connect it to a computer.
After all, they are expensive. Good ones with high precision are tremendously expensive and those ones don't really have a 'sale'.
Just buy a cheap and good Dobsonian, the collimation might cause some issues, but honestly I don't think it is a problem.
Brands don't matter that much if you are buying a 6 or 8 inch one.

This mount has an autoguider port for tracking in RA, which will help keep it on your target. But unless you want to take really long exposures, a good polar alignment is good enough for 3-5 minutes without the need for autoguiding.

I made my own dobsonian including hand grinding the mirror, and it is signed by John Dobson.

If you are a beginner, better join the local astronomy club. Talk to the people there, look through their telescopes and you will figure out what you are interested in and what you need. It might turn out that a pair of decent binoculars is much useful and better than a cheap telescope.

  • The hardest part of using the star adventurer (or any star tracker) is getting the polar alignment right. (Align to the southern celestial pole SCP)

    • there are many methods and tools to do this. its true we dont have a convinent Polar star like Polaris in Souther Hemispher , there are a few quick and long methods. You dont have to get it perfect, Depends how long a exposure you want to take and what part of the sky the object is in. There is a similar unit from Ioptton that comes with a polar alignment camera that makes it quicker. But you could add a similar camera method to this unit also.
If you really want to take long exposures then polaraignment is neccesary. But you could if you are in low light polluted skies take many shorter exposures.

Great price on a nice bit of kit. Don't necessarily use it for only astro, you can also have fun doing panning timelapse videos with this.

  • Hey guys,

Is it worth getting the ball head adapter?

I am planning on using this with my DSLR.

    • +1

You can put a ball head on the on bracket without the ball head adaptor.

  • Does anyone know what this includes that is missing from the "SKY-WATCHER STAR ADVENTURER 2I PHOTO KIT"? Is it just the counterweight?

    • everything. only the motor is included in SKY-WATCHER STAR ADVENTURER 2I PHOTO KIT, hence cheaper

  • Hey guys, check out this video.

He talks about using glow in the dark tape on the tripod legs as well inside the unit as an alternative to needing the polarscope.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9TKZEoOD38

    • He is describing a way to use the glow in the dark tape to illuminate the reticle in the polarscope without the illuminator. The polarscope is still needed for polar alignment.

  • The kit that we received doesn't come with the polar scope.

According to the paperwork that came with it, this is due to mandatory battery safety requirements.
