Better Windows Laptop (New Only) than This One at This Current Price Point? ($798) Acer Aspire 5 Core i5 Notebook

I'm a gal and laptop noob. Have been wanting to buy a laptop as a gift but have spent hours and hours reading and researching and its all a bit challenging :-).

Have also spent heaps of time reading all the laptop posts on OzBargain and unfortunately wasn't ready to make a purchase during Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals :(

Would really appreciate hearing your suggestions on other (New) laptop options than the below, at this current price point $798

My understanding is that this laptop will allow extra RAM to be installed if desired (won't be done by me!)

Windows 11 Home, Intel Core i5-1135G7 Processor, 2.4GHz
4 CPU Cores: 4, GPU: Intel® Iris® Xe
512GB SSD, 8GB RAM, Max Expandable Ram (GB): 20
Number Of Memory Slots: 1
RAM Type: DDR4

FHD Screen, 15.6"
Ports: HDMI: 1, USB Type-C: 1
1.65kg, 1 yr warranty

Use case: needs to be portable to take around places, ideally could support light video-editing, but understand if not possible at this price point. (I know that more powerful refurbished options are available like Dell Latitude 7000 series, etc, but I'm looking for new)

TIA!

  • Are you aware of the potential/future use cases for the laptop? Any gaming or heavy tasks? If yes, might you be better off getting a desktop?

    • Thanks CrispyChrispy! I forgot to add this to the post! It has to be a (relatively portable) laptop, as this friend does volunteer work with me and the laptop is taken around everywhere! Some capacity for light video-editing work would be great, and I wonder whether at this price-point I can get something that could support that….

  • I've just noticed a relatively newish post showing Lenovo IdeaPad 3 5625U for $791.20 with code: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/742688#comment-13062651

Learning from Ozbargain community, I've done a comparison of the processor via the below website.

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/4760vs3830/AMD-Ryzen-5-…

The results appear to show the AMD Ryzen is better. Just reading off the comparison results, AMD Ryzen clockspeed is 2.3GHz, vs Intel 2.45GHz; AMD Ryzen has 6 core (12 thread) and Intel has 4 core (8 thread).

    Further thoughts, anyone?

    • and CPU Mark (% diff. to max in group)
14874 for AMD Ryzen and 10026 for Intel i5-1135G7

I hope I'm interpreting this correctly.

      • in my experience, Lenovo cheaps out to the extreme on budget devices. The build quality/screen panel quality will usually be bad with other issues becoming apparent once you have the device. Usually the specs are not representative of the product quality in my experience with my last laptop underperforming due to constantly overheating.

  • My friend likes Acer more, so I am continuing my search. HN has a similar laptop for same price $798 but with a slightly better CPU I think (intel core i7-1165G7)

Can any laptop experts share other laptop options if known?

    • +2

Lenovo over acer any day of the week.

      • Thank you

      • Why?

        • Mainly because Acer sucks and Lenovo do not.

  • In case if you haven't got 1 and don't mind a US stock.
