Good price, can price match at Officeworks

    • +2

Should be able to price beat for another 5% discount and stack with 10% or 15% Ultimate Gift Card.

      • Where do you get the ultimate gift card discount?

    • Called them but they said it's a different model number.

      • +1

yeah sneaky, though the specs look identical,
        6W4H3PA hardly normals
        HPEH0033TU OW

      • +7

Lol so many excuses to not price match these retailers

Next thing they gonna say it's not manufactured under same time or batch number different then even same model can't price match bs

        • +3

Laptops are notorious for different model no's amongst retailers

          • @Plasma: not only laptops - most expensive appliances - used to be washing machines, fridges, stoves, mattresses - as sold by department stores and continuing

so that you can't price compare because that (otherwise identical) product has a completely different brand and model number !

        • +4

Its not manufactured during a blue moon where the planets have aligned.

        • Once we are part of a Union so called product exclusive variant monopolies will likely be a target to crackdown on. For now try to get the BIGgest discount you can!

    • +3

officeworks just dropped the price in their website

      • +1

        Thanks deal updated

  • Holy!

  • This or entry level m1 macbook air?

    • +2

If you can stand OSX and don't need native windows support then M1.

      • +2

Apple has ok if overpriced hardware. But wow the os is shite.

        • Why's that? Genuinely would like to know as I'm considering the M2 Air just for performance, efficiency and resale.

          • @Techie4066: Definitely good for resale.

You need the 512GB for performance, but you can get a M1 Pro for close to that price and it's much better.

  • Also a $50 e-gift card if you have a Latitude 28degrees card.

    • +1

Got that email from latitude, but when I click on the link to sign up it doesn't do anything - I hope people realise that.

  • How do graphics compare to Vegas 6 in Ryzen 4500u

  • Upgradable Ram?

  • -5

Why is this a great deal? Can someone break it down? I got NFI

    Ram is soldiered.

The 1 star ratings are pretty suss, so it has good reviews.

    • +29

Its below 1k with 16GB RAM where most around this price range only have 8GB.

CPU is recent. The screen being 2.2k res is far better where most arent even 1080p at this price range.

Storage is double than most in this price range.

But pro tip. Don't give that grub Gerry any money. Buy it off OW.

      • For this brand? I've seen alot of laptops with 16GB under 1k.

        • +4

And the rest of the spec is similar or the same?

          • +1

@xoom: For 800 better than most laptop specs in similar price range. 16GB Ram good enough for most but upgradable ram would be a great deal.

            • @Ninja9: Yeah, for $800 it's good even better if you got gift cards. $700 is dirt cheap!

I think 16GB is good, but always better for more if possible depending on what you use it for.

            • +1

@Ninja9: A 16GB stick costs about 80 bucks online, i.e. less than 10% of the purchase price. Soldering is just planned obsolescence.

Savvy retailers could discount the price by offering a basic 4/8GB configuration (with one SO-DIMM slot free) with upgrades to 16GB or 32GB configurations. But that would mean offering a modicum of support and training their minimum wage sales consultants how to use a screwdriver.

      • +1

Ha ha comment of the century “don’t give any money to that grub Gerry” big time mate ..completely agree

        • I guess if you pay taxes he'll get a slice of that too…

    • If nothing else, it's the first 800 bucks i5 1240p laptop we've seen.

  • -1

    No Thunderbolt?

    • It should have it - in 12th gen, the Thunderbolt controller is in the CPU

      • -1

        Yea thunderbolt Power and DP

      • +1

The specs does not mention TB4 but "2 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 10Gbps signaling rate (USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge)".

          • @Kelvin: Does the lack of thunderbolt mean I cannot power multiple external displays or just the newer type which use a daisy-chain arrangement on the usbc port?

I was just about to purchase and am now concerned this comment might mean I won’t be able to use a usbc dongle which provides support for two additional hdmi monitors

            • @Markusaus: It has HDMI port and the USB-C ports do support alt-mode (DP 1.4). So you can use multiple external displays.
You don't actually want daisy chain, at least not for this type of laptop. Thunderbolt monitors supporting daisy chain are expensive.

USB-C/alt-mode with MST, that I am not sure (since it is not mentioned in the specs, I would assume no to be safe).

  • How do people price match at Officeworks? Just call? Can you use the gift cards online or over the phone?
    Thanks

    • You call head office. You get them to pricebeat.

      • +1

        Thanks

Can you use those home gift cards on the phone?

Would be a bargain for $700

Can't even find this on Officeworks website.

        • Give them a call. Then you can ask them. Its the only way to really know.

          • @xoom: True
            Thanks

    • Only a few weeks ago, I walked into an Officeworks store and said I found a cheaper price online. The employee went to the competitions website to confirm the price, and then price matched while I was in the store. I then payed for it in the store at the new price.

  • Wow nice bit of kit

  • +3

Could someone please recommend me a good value for money laptop for a high school kid (Year 8)?
I remember that a lot of people love the ThinkPad.

    • +2

This. Or if they go to private school, a M1 air (should be around $1350 with edu discount).

    • Yes this.

    • -2

LOL at year 8s needing PCs that crap all over what I use to teach uni!

    • The issue with this laptop and Intel 12th gen CPU's is that they use to much power and don't have good battery life. If your kids needs to be unplugged from a power point, it won't last the school day and gets worse over time due to battery degradation.

  • I have a spare $150 gift card from the Pixel deal

Can you use multiple gift cards online through HN?

I don't wanna give them money, but hey!

    Lol

7% off, can this be used with office works on phone after price beat?

  • +5

    Proper bargain

  • +2

Battery life not good according to Just Josh.

    • +3

Up to 9 hours which I imagine is ideal conditions. My concern would be what the battery life will be after some battery degradation.

    • Agree, battery life is a bit disappointing, otherwise a nice laptop with a very good price on offer.

    • +1

See here on battery life in this series of Intel chips generally: https://www.theverge.com/23496706/intel-p-series-processor-c…

      • Is there empirical data on this? Have anyone did measurement on performance per watt based on lower tdp yet?

      • Unfortunately it's a common issue with 12th gen due to reaching their max TDP very quickly.

        https://www.notebookcheck.net/Core-i5-beats-Core-i7-Alder-La…

"We reviewed a few new Alder Lake-P CPUs from Intel over the last two weeks and our concerns are supported by the test results. The power consumption is very high, which is a challenge for the cooling solutions."

  • Hmm need ultrabook for travelling i think 1.4kg isnt that light, am i correct? Waiting for lg gram on sale

    • Asus Zenbook 14

    • +1

I have travelled internationally and they never did weigh my laptop bag. So theres that.

      • +1

        Ok let me think again.

      • times…. they are a changin!

        • +3

TBH if airlines are really concern about weight. They should make it a combined passenger weight + their baggage weight.

          • @xoom: Leads one to wonder whether they are always well under the tolerance

or skirt by probability like bookings

            • @UsernameChecksIn: Well they can control the weight of the bags as the upper limit is set. x weight of bag times number of.

So they have a reasonable idea of the total baggage weights.

As for the passengers its a total guesstimate. Perhaps going by average weight of an adult times by number of adult. Repeated for the number of children.

      • Looks good. But 8gb on board

  • +1

This seems cheap, good for a work computer if you don't need the battery life

    • How bad is it?

      • Bro just buy the laptop. You'll regret not buying it when this deal expires / becomes OOS.

You're backflipping all over the comments. Buy first, think later.

        • +6

Buy first, then you lose the savings which make it worth while? Makes no sense.

People aren't going crazy over this, if it sells then another deal will be around on boxing day or next year.

        • When someone is thinking of spending around $800, why do impulsive buying without doing proper research? I believe battery life is a big factor when deciding on a laptop.

          • +2

@buddysayshi: You been here 6 years and are not familiar with the ozb mantra. Buy first before justification.

  • Officeworks customer service isn't open, only Monday to Friday.

What proof do i need to get this deal Monday? But it's Public holidays….so maybe no one is working til Wednesday?

    • +1

go instore, but comment from above says it's a different model number

      • Specs look the same to me tho, but true.

        Thanks for heads up!

  • No built-in RJ45 port. Will network connectivity work over the USB-C port when a dock is plugged in? If not, would be a deal breaker for me due to the need to transfer large files over network.

    • Should work. You can also get usb a to rj 45 adaptors.

  • Real question is this good laptop for a primary schooler?

    • +3

this is overkill, just get them a Chromebook

      • I've been giving the young one to use the old Lenovo MIIX600 with touch screen since pandemic not sure of an upgrade. It's getting slow even for browsing etc

        A 2017 laptop

        • Might just need to clear some background app, or need some more storage. If nothing is important, just format it.

    • +3

You monster. You should get the an m2 macbook.

      /s

      • Nice joke =P

    • It's overkill but also the battery life is not good.
