QLD Resident Buying a Car in NSW

I'm in the process of purchasing a car from a private seller in NSW.

I've done the PPSR check and am getting the vehicle inspected. Assuming that everything goes well, there appears to be two schools of thought with regard to the best way to bring the car back to Qld and change the registration. The first appears to be to cancel the NSW registration while still down there and obtain an unregistered vehicle permit to drive the vehicle back to Queensland and register it here. The second option is to transfer the NSW registration into my name while in NSW, drive home and then obtain Qld plates and registration. The stamp duty appears to be slightly cheaper in NSW.

Has anyone had recent experience with a similar scenario and what would you recommend?

Thanks.

    from QLD roads website

    Moving to Queensland—change your registration
If you move to Queensland from another state or territory, you must get Queensland registration and a Queensland driver licence. You have 14 days to register your vehicle in Queensland and may be fined if you don’t.

When you register your vehicle in Queensland, you can apply to get a refund on the remaining part of your interstate registration.

To do this, you need to hand in your interstate number plates and provide a current Queensland safety certificate to a transport and motoring customer service centre or, if you live in a rural area, a QGAP office, Magistrates Court or local police station that provides vehicle registration services.

You will get a receipt for the surrender of the number plates. To cancel the interstate registration and receive a refund you must contact the interstate authority where your vehicle was previously registered.

TL:DR - drive the NSW reg car to QLD and then change reg to QLD. get refund from NSW roads.

Get owner to cancel rego. Reduce cost of car by that amount. Get unreg permit. Drive home. Get car rego'd in your name in QLD.

    • What about comprehensive insurance on the way back?

      • Yes. Of course. Why would you not? You never mentioned insurance in your post, hence I didn't mention it.

I also didn't tell you to make sure there was sufficient air in the tyres. But you will, won't you?

        • I think you misunderstood me or I was not clear enough. What I'm trying to say is how can I get comprehensive insurance on the way back if I am driving with an unregistered vehicle permit. There seem to be no insurers that offer this option.

          • @Pete10001: What? Which insurer has said no? or are you just guessing?

An UVP effectively makes an unregistered car, registered. It's a legal way of driving an unreg car from A to B.

Which insurer have you actually asked? All they need is a VIN. I'm from VIC. I bought a used NSW car from a dealer. They cancelled the rego and took the plates. I got insurance from someone, don't remember who, based on the VIN and then drove back to VIC, with comp insurance.

The second option is to transfer the NSW registration into my name while in NSW

    Is that an option?

If you don’t have a NSW address, they won’t change the registration into your name if you are taking back to QLD.

Get the owner to cancel the rego, take that off the price of the car, get an UVP, drive it home, re-register in QLD.

    • Thanks, any idea whether I can comprehensively insure the car if I only have an UVP? I could not find anything on this

Call and ask your insurance company. Providing it has the correct documentation to be driven on the road (UVP), it shouldn't be an issue… But don't assume, just make a quick phone call to your insurer, because some do, and some don't.

      • Never had trouble insuring a car on a UVP

Car transport company to your door ( *Subject to available access), or unregistered drivers permit.
(May vary between states), but in Qld you can purchase up to 7 days permit, and are able to refund the unused days.
I bought an Auction car from Hamilton North NSW.
Basically options were as mentioned above.
Truck delivery/permit, or door to door delivery.
    Best of luck.

  • Thanks all for your input. Does anyone know if there are any insurers that will comprehensively insure a car that is being driven with an unregistered vehicle permit? What about if I have a NSW address that is not mine, can I then transfer the car into my name in NSW or will questions be asked due to my Qld licence?

Would you please get off your keyboard and actually phone an insurer or six and ask them.

      • I read a number of threads online in relation to this and it seems that it is very difficult to get comprehensive insurance on a vehicle that is not registered. That's why I was reaching out to the OzB brains trust, rather than spending an hour or more on the phone.

        • Have you rung anyone yet?

  • You should have a couple of weeks to transfer rego (check with your state). Drive it back on nsw rego with Comp insurance. Transfer the rego after you get home, then notify the insurer you’ve changed rego on the vehicle.

I don’t know if this will cause any headaches with the insurance if you do have a crash, but the car will still be registered while you’re driving it, just the official ownership is in the transfer window.

    • This would be my preferred option, since driving with a UVP might result in getting randomly stopped by police all along the way and means you need to drive directly from point A to B. Would like to stay overnight somewhere on the way back if we need to.

Any idea what happens with CTP during the 14 day transfer rego window? In NSW it does not seem to attach to rego like it does in Qld. Would def get comprehensive insurance, just not sure what happens with CTP in NSW.

      • CTP is bought separately, but attached to rego so it will still be valid until rego is cancelled.

  • sorry to hijack this thread but any tips on vice versa of what the OP is asking? assume deregistering it, UVP back to NSW and registering it in NSW is the go? thanks

    • Drive South instead of North

  • Can confirm that after speaking to Service NSW they had no issue with us buying a NSW registered car and driving it back to Qld as long as rego is changed to Qld within 2 weeks. Just needed Part B of the NSW registration papers filled out by the seller along with a detailed receipt. For peace of mind we also had an NRMA inspection done, along with getting comprehensive insurance. The other option of getting an unregistered vehicle permit and driving the vehicle back was also valid, however stricter guidelines like time limits and only being allowed to drive from point A to B, would have been applicable.
