Ducted Evaporative Cooling - No Air Coming from Vents

Hi everyone,

I have a Breezair ducted evaporative cooling and was trying to turn it on today.

On the control, when I press ON, it shows AUTO cool mode but there is no air coming through the vents at all even after leaving it ON for like 30min.

Can someone advice what could possibly be wrong or what can I check?

I am not a very handy person if someone guides, i might give it a go to test few things.

Would really appreciate your help.

Make sure the tap outside is turned on. Generally that's turned off in winter to avoid the pipes freezing (in cool climates).

Check out youtube for videos on the cooler and see what you can find.

  • You could check the on/off switch located next to motor inside the roof mounted unit, remove pad - water inlet side. Check the fan-belt is in one piece, if it is not direct drive.

    • Before i climb the roof and get to the unit, is there something i need to check with the controller settings?

      • Some controllers allow for water circulation, to soak the pads without the fan. Make sure you are not in that mode.

  • Can you hear the fan at all? What if you increase the speed?

    • I can't hear fan at all.

Its almost after a year I have turned it ON and it just wont work. Never had any issues before.

The only thing was there was power surge a week or two so ago if that has trigggered something?

But the controller does not give any error. It goes to the screen as it should.

      • You mentioned it's in auto cool mode. Have you tried switching it to manual mode?

Does the unit have its own fuse / breaker? Have you checked your breaker box to see if any switches need to be flipped?

        • I have tried manual mode but did not work either. And i do not have a dedicated fuse/ breaker and all were ON.

Motor could be burnt out, but your next step is going to need be getting on the roof and do a physical check of the unit.

    • Any obvious signs i should look for?

I have never gone on the roof before, any advice?

Be careful where you step so as to not crack the tiles (assuming you have a tiled roof)
Remove one of the side panels from the evap. head unit to see if the air fan is turning, given what you say it is most likely not turning.
See if anything obviously wrong with the motor - eg loose wire, burnt plastic smell

If you have never been on a roof before and no experience with working at heights, then my advice is don’t and get someone who does repairs. A fall from any height let alone a roof can be very very painful, even life threatening. DAMHIK.

If you do decide to risk it have a plan. Have a person on standby to hold the ladder and to ring triple0 when you get stuck or fall. Rooves can very slippery and appropriate footwear is needed. Now, what are you going to do when you get there. It may be something you will not be able to fix depending on your handyman abilities and trade qualifications.

See I am not a handyman but i feel I will never learn like this to do things.

I do not intend straight to fix something but atleast figure out something obvious that is not right.

Atm i have no ideas how it is connected to mains or how water is supplied to the unit or the drainage etc.

I am watching some videos about safety measures to take going to roof yet alone trying to fix the cooler.

I am not in rush to fix it so will take my time but i thought if it had anything to with like resetting controller or something like a button to flick in the actual unit.

If it would not be obvious, will look for a professional to fix it.

But all suggestions from experienced DIY fellows are always welcome and makes you think before doing a task safely.

        • "A fall from any height let alone a roof can be very very painful, even life threatening. "

          100%. Please don't.

That's literally how Garth Tander's father died last month. Really not worth it. Spend money get it fixed.

Avoid the going on the roof if it is wet, and/or the angle is too steep. Best to extend ladder >1m past the gutter. If you think it is unsafe, get someone else with experience to do it. Depends on the model, there may be plastic clips that hold the pads, that need to be pulled out, and they may break due to aging. Usually remove the clips, and pull out the top part of the pad first, then lift it off the bottom support. Careful the pad doesn't slide off the roof.

        Chared cabling.
        Burnt smell.
        Water dripping.
        Broken case.
        Melted plastic.

        • Thanks will definitely look in to it.

My little one is not well atm but as soon as she gets better this will be my task as a priority.

        Don't. Hire a pro.

I have tried all possible settings on the control but no luck so far. Checked circuit breaker which is ON.

  • Should the controller not give some sort of error code?

  • Did it dump water? Maybe the solenoid. Did you try just putting it on Vent to see if it works, at least that will help isolate the problem.

I've got the exact same issue and brand at the moment. I got up on the roof and couldn't notice anything that stood out so now waiting for the guys who installed it to come check it out tomorrow. Mine is about 9 years old. Will update once I know more but have a feeling it's gonna be a new motor.

    • They are ordering a new motor for my fan and a control board. They are thinking it's just the board but just in case they ordered the motor.

  • If the remote is wireless, change the batteries,
very unlikely the evap is not on a dedicated circuit at your switch board, but if all of the breakers are on in your switch board that ticks that box.
if the controller has no error code and you cant her any noise when the unit is turned on its probably the controller, its a common failure on Breezeair evaps.
get a tradie to look at it, the chance of it being an easy fix for you is very unlikely.

    • The controller is like fixed on the wall, i tried but couldn't get it off and was worried if i will break it. How to check or change batteries then?

Unless I am doing something silly and not be able to remove it.

      • my wording above was misleading, it should have read,
if the remote has no error code and you cant her any noise when the unit is turned on its probably the controller, its a common failure on Breezeair evaps.
the controller i am referring to is on the roof.
you may have a wired remote and if so its power is fed from controller on roof.
get a tradie into sort it.

  • most common cause for those symptoms is a stuck solenoid. it's a job for a tradie. quite common. will probably cost at least $300 if out of warranty.

    • Do i have to call a tradie or i can have free quotes?

Do they come out and check or provide free quotes over the phone?

      • They may have USED to come and give you a free quote, but now-a-days thats less likely especially given the shortage of tradies its harder to even get them out when you are paying them!

It is very unlikely that they would be able to quote it by phone as they wouldn't have any idea what is wrong. If you go to a specialist HVAC/AC engineer they may well have a good idea what it "usually" is and tell you what the cost for that is - but until they come out and check it they are purely guessing. And, it could well take them time to diagnose on site and find out whats wrong before they can then give you a price anyway.

Check if any friends/family/neighbours can recommend anyone they have used before if you do decide to get someone out.

        • Will try around but can someone recommend anyone they have used before?
