  • What's the advantage over the Bosch chuck?

    • +4

Less run out and easier to use without a locking ring which I believe is intended for drills capable of spinning in reverse.

The chuck is easier to replace than the needle bearings (another mod many people recommend for reducing wobble), but in my case made less of a difference. In addition to these mods I made custom shaft bushings to greatly reduce movement between the drill head and shaft. While I'm very happy with the result, if you want this level of precision and place any value on your time, I would recommend buying a better drill to start with.

      • Interesting. Can chucks or bearings be replaced on standard drills? I have a Dewalt cordless drill, probably one of the cheaper lower quality ones, was about $250 and it has a slight wobble which gets to me a bit.

I imagine the cheaper consumerware ones are not designed to be tinkered with like everything else. Not that it stops me.

Hammer and alley key to remove the chuck or if you are a bit more adventurous try an impact driver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xagFLCseeDk You will want to know whether it is a RH or LH thread.

If you like tinkering, changing the bearings might be a bit of fun. Whether the economics stack up compared to replacing it with new, you've got to consider the risk of breaking something as well as the time & cost to source replacement parts. Then again, like the PBD40 you could end up with something better than it comes out of the factory.

      • Could you please point me in the right direction for a good pro-sumer level one? Home player here working on cars mostly.

This cost as much as my drill

      Costs more than my drills

  • thanks, op. made the order. I need tjhis chuck to drill holes for metal rod. The current chuck is basic useless to me.

Got the Bosch recently and was thinking about this chuck, but still can't bring myself to pay more than 50% of what I paid for the drill itself.
Having received it now, the locking ring is a bit annoying but the run out doesn't seem too bad (haven't actually measured) and I think it was a lot worse on earlier batches.
Had to adjust the laser but seems pretty good. When I get serious about drill presses I guess there's always this ;)

  • This chuck is great but I can understand if you don't want to pay that much. My run out went from 0.12 mm to 0.01 - 0.02 mm.

I still suggest doing the second best mod for this drill: changing the round handle to a 3 spoke machine handle

Both the chuck and the wheel are the two best upgrades for this press. Your turning an ‘ok’ press into a great one.

Most people dont realize the default one is the same brand as this listing but is spec’d for a hand held chordless drill. This one is made to be for a press hence the accuracy difference.

To me this was a no brainer of an upgrade.

  • Was looking at getting one of these before this discount. Just bought a cheaper chuck on eBay for about $60. Might get this and send the eBay one back when I get it.
