VoIP Phone Line with Launtel

So, I recently moved to launtel after years with Telstra (reason - they disconnected by nbn for no reason lol) and the place I’m moving soon has couple of landline phones. I was wondering what’s the option do I have ?

I read somewhere that I need an ATA box, one cable from modem goes to ata and then ata output to phone.

Any other option here?

If not, then what service provider would give me a phone line, I saw crazytel, but not sure which plan and will they support the ATA connector.

Any advise from someone who’s actually having a similar setup?

  • If you can manage I always say keep the NBN and VoIP seperate. That way if your NBN is mucking you about or find a better you can switch on minimal notice. Don’t have to wait for your number to move over.

I use a rooted Telstra Gen 2 modem for my parents place and works well. They went with Crazytel and Superloop, but they are at the end of their 6 months so I’ll probably switch soon.

    • So how do we sort out the modem thing? I do have Telstra’s modem

      • Check you have the right one. Look at the bottom. Check if it’s a DJA0230 or DJA0231…

    • OP will have no idea how to root a Technicolor modem.

    • Hi, I'm trying to get crazytel on a rooted modem too. Is there a guide you used to get it working. It keeps showing as unregistered. Idk if I'm using the wrong details on the wrong locations

  • Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) is one way. The other is to purchase an IP phone.

  • Any other option here?

ATA with existing phone or Gigaset cordless handset if you want all in one (eg: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/275529203552).

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9n1j1mkq <- Crazytel promo with $2 free credit to test and details of a CrazySaver plan. They do support ATAs.

I have a few spare Sipura SPA3000 ATAs floating around :)

    • Currently using Cisco ATA 192 using CrazyTel PAYG option. Does the job for my parents

Was previously using the TPG supplied VR1600v2 modem on the bundled phone/nbn plan. Parents constantly complained about phone calls not received and line engaged/unavailable. Since unbundling to AussieBroadband and Crazytel haven't looked back. Unbundling internet and phone means you can change providers/home without being tied.

You can use a ATA,IP phone or as voip softphone on your mobile. Some voip providers allow you to dial a local number from your mobile to make an international call.

Why are you wanting to use voip?

If it is to make internetional calls then check the various mobile service providers like Boost or Coles mobile. If they include calls to your international destination thats the cheapest and least hassle.

I used to be a big voip fan years back signing up to multiple Voip providers and having all sorts of voip hardware. Now I just use my mobile(Boost) with included unlimited international calls to 20 countries and limited number of minutes to 30 other countries.

With the spread of cheap internet to all corners of the world, its even better to videochat with your loved ones on whatsapp etc rather than make a mobile call even.

Not sure why you would bother with a couple of landline phones in 2022.
