Awesome game, hope they do a sequel.

The core team members have been fired unfortunately. :(

      Unfortunately, there's no "they" anymore.

A few months ago Martin Luiga (a found member of ZA/UM) made a post announcing the dissolution of the 'ZA/UM cultural association' and that himself, Kurvitz and another two founding members had not been working at the company for some time after leaving involuntarily.

Seems as though their original investors were bought out by another set of investors, including Toni Haavel who has previously been convicted of fraud.
The new investors then forced them out in order to take over the project.
Speculation is that the new investors want to introduce microtransactions of some sort in order to make it more profitable.

Luiga signed the post saying that he's now in a mental health ward, with no explanation on why.

Kurvits and Rostov have directly accused Haavel of fraud in his purchase of the company (Zaum Studio OÜ) and are pursuing legal options in both United Kingdom and Estonia

Some of the top reviews suggesting to instead pirate the game over giving the studio money is also interesting. Is the situation that bad?

    • +42

This review sums it all up:

      Why not to buy?
There was a hostile takeover of Za/um (originally a creative collective) by a couple of crooked rich people who embezzled capital from the company, then used that very cash to buy the majority share and force out the founders.
The original creative force who wrote the game, and who's lived experiences influenced the plot and setting were fired under false pretence meaning their intellectual property was stolen and they are no long benefiting from this work.

By purchasing this game you are now supporting wealthy thieves.
      Do not buy this game

This is so sad. I haven’t played for a while but there’d be a fairly appropriate “thought” for this situation in game, I reckon.

By purchasing a lot of things in everyday life you will be supporting wealthy thieves.

It absolutely sucks to hear stories like these, but I've also been wanting to play this game, and don't want to risk pirating on my pc, and now feel shitty about buying it too, it's a lose-lose situation.

        • +6

It's a shitty situation but take comfort knowing you're purchasing it at a heavily discounted price and you get to experience the masterpiece that the original team created.

The game is available in a DRM free format, as such there is literally no risk to downloading it.

Edit: Not that you should, and not encouraging you to, but fear of doing so is not sensible.

Best thing to do would be to buy a second hand copy, no money then goes to the thieves.

I will add that, thank you

  • Slow burn but a great game.

    • a candle that burns half as bright lasts twice as long

  • Great game. Got it free on Epic but worth dropping 15 on with change, easy.

    • +1

when was it free on epic?

      • +1

I don't think it was ever free on Epic. If it was I would have it.

        • +1

Ah, my bad. I very rarely buy on Epic but for some reason this time I did. $10.64 about this time last year but that may have been with a voucher.

  • Highly recommend.

It's $12.82 if you happen to already own Control Ultimate Edition and choose to buy the bundle with that.
