20 Hour Stay at Kuala Lumpur Aiport

Good people,

I will be at Kuala Lumpur airport for about 20 hours. My first to the country of Malaysia. I will arrive around 3 PM and depart the next day around mid-day.

Sleeping at the airport is a lovely option, but can someone please recommend what can I do if I go outside? Sleep at a hotel (preferably closer to the airport) and come back to the airport early morning the next day?

Recommendations?

Thank you.

If you're willing to spend a little, you can go out and get a massage/spa/sauna service overnight.

    • Too late to change flights.

        It's only a 4 hour drive.

4x2 = 8 hours just for driving for 8 hour fun. Yea nah..

    • KL is certainly different to Singapore - it is not as neat and tidy - but it is also a LOT less expensive.
I think KL is great, and when I'm spending my own money I'd choose it over Singapore.

      • Last time I was there, there were rats running around the hawker stalls…

    1. Take the KLIA express high speed train to KL Sentral. KL Sentral is the central hub for public transportation to pretty much everywhere.
    2. Plenty of decent hotels nearby including a St Regis a stones throw away
    3. A trip to Bukit Bintang and KLCC for the nightlife will probably fill up the rest of your day.
    4. You'll probably not have the time to do anything in the morning the day after - if you an early riser, you can go to a local dimsum place nearby for breakfast. I suggest https://goo.gl/maps/jAES5hYVC3rwG6DA7

If you want to save a few bucks, there's also a bus from the airport to KL Sentral. From memory it's about half the price of the train but takes a little longer. There are cheap lockers at KL Sentral if you need a place to store your stuff. It's a short walk to Brickfields district which has the best Malay-Indian food in town, so get some roti canai and a teh tarik while you plan your next move.

Another idea: if you churn a credit card that includes Priority Pass, you can get into many of the airport lounges at KL.

    • Yes - I second this. The KLIA express is very reliable and takes you into the centre of KL. It is a very good service.
I would recommend that you buy your tickets at the airport rather than ahead of time. I purchased my tickets online, which I then had to show an attendant my booking at the station which took longer than if I had have purchased a ticket there.

KL (at least the central part) is a super clean and modern city.

Sentral isn't in the heart of the city - it's 6km south, but there's enough to do there alone. Nu Sentral which is the mall that is connected to the train station has a cinema and heaps of food options.

Sentral is located in an area called Brickfields which is aka little India. Incredible curries and banana leaf rice to be had. Many are refillable and you can stuff your face with more dhall than you can dream of for $5. Walk around and explore. Might save you a trip to Chennai to see the same thing.

Depend on which airport you're flying into. If it's KLIA, not sure if there's a lot of options, KLIA2 which is the low cost terminal has a few shops in the terminal and eatery. There's a few airport hotels close by. There's the Tune Hotel just next door I believe to the terminal (KLIA2) which seems a good option to sleep overnight, there's also the Mitsui Outlet close to the airport (10km) that has plenty of shopping options and food. I'm planning to stay at the tune hotel and hang out at the outlet. KL is about 45 mins away from the airport but if want to hang out near where the crowd is, that's a good option but will have to get back to the airport for flight tomorrow. To me, KL is quite cheap and plenty of good foods so you will certainly enjoy.

20 hours is plenty of time to go into the city, check into a hotel, explore the city from afternoon till dark, and then sleep comfortably before heading back to the hotel in the morning.

The train from KLIA to Sentral in around 35 minutes, which is the quickest way into the city.

There are several hotels at Sentral Station, such as Le Meridien, Hilton, aLoft which is very reasonably priced. You can splurge and enjoy the St Regis if you want (one of my favourite hotel brands). Enjoy their facilities, pool, massage etc but you can also explore the Sentral area which includes a reasonably large Nu Sentral Shopping Mall.

Otherwise, if you are adventurous, you could head to the famous Jalan Alor Street for the crazy smells, sights, and sounds of authentic street food. Then take a taxi to KLCC where you will see the Petronas Towers lit up at night, better yet, head to the Traders Hotel and have a cocktail with direct views to the lit-up majestic towers!

Please do not stay at the airport for those 20 hours.

      great answer.

I would and have smashed 50 chicken satay sticks.

After dinner, I'd also walk it from Jalan Alor Street to KLCC.

      • Agree with this.
It is pretty easy to walk from Jalan Alor up Bukit Bintang checking out shopping malls all the way to KLCC and the Towers.

        • Depending on the time of the day, flagging down a taxi and battling traffic may be slower.

    • Amazing. Thank you very much. Gonna follow this.

Beware of private drivers. We experienced 8 toll stops between the city and the airport. We were asked to pay every toll fee. Apparently the toll operator is like a brother to the King or so. The time lost was also crazy!

Personally I would go to the city even if it is far away but if you prefer not to, there is an expensive hotel outside KLIA1. There is a budget hotel outside KLIA2 and a capsule hotel inside KLIA2 as well as a small shopping centre. There is an inconvenient free bus between the two terminals or you can take the train.

I had an overnight layover in KL once. We booked a cheap Ibis in the city, which was really nice, woke up early the next morning, did the Petronas towers, had breakfast and a coffee and was back at the Airport by lunch time

The Petrona's Towers are really nice, and KL is cheap (Taxi and hotel) so would definitely recommend doing a little bit of sight seeing if you can
