Search YouTube Videos by Text and Download Full Audio or Searched Audio Segments

Express Tube - a new way to browse Youtube videos

Hi all,

I made this quirky little app. I have been teaching myself Python for about a year now, and really love it. I am originally a musician, but have been finding it hard to get a band back together, so I had to channel my creativity in some way! Anyway, I thought it would be cool to be able to search Youtube videos by text and also download audio segments for sampling purposes.

You can try it here: https://expresstube.streamlit.app/

Potential Uses

This app will work by inserting a Youtube video. If the video has a subtitles track (auto generated tracks sometimes work too) you will be able to search the video via text. This process will automatically chop each bit in the video containing the words you search. You can then play the audio segment, play the video from the location where the searched term appears, or download the audio segment.

This tool might also be helpful if looking for a specific moment in a video and not wanting to watch the full video. It sure would have been useful to me at uni :)

A word of caution

Also please note that it works best with short videos due to the free hosting via Streamlit. The app might break if it reaches its usage capacity (in which case I will consider paying for hosting).

Anyway…

Have fun, be creative, feel free to leave me some feedback and i'll take it all into consideration.

Thanks for reading and perhaps trying my app :) :) :)

Pretty cool, would make it super easy to make parody songs out of chopped up quotes from politicians. Was that the intent? Have tested and it and it works pretty good, nice work.

It was one thought haha, spot on. And thanks for the nice feedback :)

I think the app will also be useful for extracting specific data or audio you know exists in a video but maybe do not have the concentration level or time to watch the full thing. OR alternatively, if you want to find a spot in a video to share with friends, class, or for specific presentations.
It can be used for analytics, seeing how many times a word or phrase is used in a video. It can be used to download full songs from Youtube which may not be available on Spotify/Apple Music/Tidal/Soundcloud and the likes.

I really enjoy hearing creative ways in which people have been using it, so there are really no limits !

  • I crashed it…

    Oh no.
Error running app. If this keeps happening, please contact support.

    • Haha this happens sometimes. The Streamlit servers cannot cope. I put it back up for you :)

Try using a shorter video while the app is still hosted by Streamlit. I will ask them for extra bandwidth in the meantime. Sorry for any inconvenience

  • The audio clip function is cool, but you can already get a full searchable transcript with YouTube's native feature. It's hidden under the three dots on the desktop website. I was surprised when I found it!

  • Its great, thanks for creating and sharing.

    • you are most welcome my friend
