DAILY PRICE. meaning there's a different price everyday. pretty obvious…

      • +6

there is no set rules how frequently or infrequently they will change prices.

        • -1

Pretty sure in WA there is.

        • +4

          Well this isn't in WA.

    • It would have to be a mistake or some crazy promo(unlikely) as it probably under cost price.

Also, there is no "daily price". It's set by the market and can change at any time.

      • +3

i just passed the station 1 hr ago and they still got this price

      • Its not under 'cost' price per say, its not below manufacturing cost, but its below gate price (the price of the fuel inclusive of the levy excluding GST)

Its good buying currently since ethanol is still in short supply so they arent doing a 1 in 10 mix for E10 product (not that it ever is a true 10% anyways, varies between 0 and 7% usually.

        • +2

No it isnt, actual production cost price is around 60c-70c per L depending on the crude's buy price for that particular batch.

        • -2

brent crude for august contract around $98/barrel
          1 barell = 158.987295
so the price per littre around 0.616401455
processing cost around 20% then the cost price around 70 cents
fuel tax around 15 cents then price become 85 cents
profit margin around 10 cents, make it 95 cents
then plus gst 10% make the cost price around 104.5 cents, then the different is the profit margin for the operator.

        • +2

No it isnt, actual production cost price is around 60c-70c

the retailer does not pay just for the production cost… they have to pay for transport, rent, staff, insurance etc. etc…. they are lucky to make 5-6c on the wholesale price…

        • +1

I'd have to agree with jv here. The retailer (Coles) don't make the fuel, they buy it.

"they are lucky to make 5-6c on the wholesale price…"

yep. believe it or not! of course the news media would have you think otherwise.

        • +5

i was in the petrol game for years…

there's no money to be made in selling petrol… All the profit came from selling stuff instore at 300% markup and by getting customers to use the workshop…
we made more money from selling cigs than from petrol !!!

Coles got into petrol to get more customers into their supermarkets to get fuel dockets, they don't give a toss how much they make from petrol…

        • fuel tax around 15 cents

fuel tax is A$0.7188 per litre, not 15 cents… (according to wikipedia)
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_tax#Australia

or 38c per litre according to accc
          http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/348768

either way, it's a lot more than 15c

(plus GST of course… the tax on a tax)

        • +1

Thats right, they pay gate price + transportation, but a decent portion of the cost is from levies and taxes.

Coles and woolworths are agents for Shell/Caltex production is still owned by shell/caltex/BP, however this is changing as Clyde is shutting down shortly in favour of bringing it in already processed out of taipei for a fraction of the cost of manufacture here. We wont see the price difference, however if a natural disaster happens (for example typhoon/tsunami activity which is common there) then supply will be extremely tight.

        • -6

luckily i use the word around, not the word exact lol

        • .

      • -1

considering they have to report what their price is going to be the next day, they can't just change it anytime

        • -1

Nope, not in Vic or nsw they don't.

  • +6

WoolworthS. A pet hate of mine.

Making a special trip to a service station you weren't going to go past anyway would ruin the economy of the cheap fuel for most cars.

    • +8

Sorry, 91 and 95 refer to octane. Not petrol percentage.

    • +3

91, 95, etc is the Octane rating… What are you talking about?

    • -1

      "9% other stuff"
      uh..yeah.

      your logic is wrong

  • ok… so there is about 40 mins remaining…
    ozbargainers be quick!

    • they are not change the price at midnight on time mate, some times i saw them change in the next morning.

      • OMG, does that meet they broke the rules for "DAILY" pricing !!!!

        • -2

u said you are on this games for years, you should know the rule of this game, don't pretend that you don't know this game LOL

        • u said you are on this games for years

no, i said 'was'… not many independents left now… coles and woolies bought most of us out…

we changed the price whenever we liked… to match or beat what competitors were doing down the road. had to then call the wholesaler to get a rebate based on the amount of fuel underground…

price changes were usually 3 times a day, sometimes more…

you should know the rule of this game

can you point me to which law now says the price can't change ?

        • -3

so they can change their price at any time then lol if they do it at 8 am from previous day, then if they change at 8 am the following day, that would be daily update as well. it doesn't have to be midnight

  • +2

in W.A. they can only change the price of petrol once a day.
i think it happens at 6am, but im not sure

    • +1

That's interesting. I wonder how it effects things.

  • Was $1.13 with 4c discount at North Ryde (Sydney) today, both Shell/Coles on Lane Cove Road, and Woolworths/Caltex on Epping Road. Pitty we filled up the other day when $1.18 was looking like a bargain!

    • +1

Wow you guys do have a very cheap cycle right now in NSW. We're back up around 1.29 for ULP in VIC after several weeks of under 1.20 which was fantastic.

      • +1

You've had it good for too long. It's our turn now!

        • it was $1.50 before that, here in Vic.

What price do you guys normally have?

        • $1.20-1.30 for e10, i normally filled either at coles shell or woolworth caltex

  • Meh, it's around this price in here before docket discount. Silly to drive all the way to Strathfield just for this.

Actually if you look at the curve here, petrol has fallen a lot in the last cycle. It will be interesting to guess if the fall continues or it will shoot up again. Tomorrow being Sunday, they might wait until Monday. Then again it's school holidays and many people are out of town.

    • around this price? tell me when was the last time price fall below $1.10. hmm couple years back?

      • +1

Look at the curve, it's dropping everywhere, not just your neighbourhood. Anyway how many litres can you stash? Do you have a storage tank in your backyard? :P

If you need to fill up soon, then it's a great deal. But chill out.

        • don't answer the question with another question, you will be fail at your school LOL

        • I can see you are getting high on all that petrol. :)

        • surely i use something else not this stuff if i want get high lol

  • if you use the fuel card from other promotion (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71735) on ozbargain before , then you save more money

    • +1

You save $4 on that card no matter when you fill up. So it makes no difference if you pay the $4 in cash now and save the card for use later.

      • -1

better to use the card than using my cash, i just put my cash on my higher online saver account. that is true ozbargain :) lol

        • But you had $6 less in your account while waiting for the card. :)

        • thats why i have to use it asap, not hold it for another weeks as ur sugestion

        • +1

I'll leave it to you, with your financial acumen, to work out how many millicents interest you can gain out of $4 in your savings account for a few more days. But then, maybe you are looking to be nominated for extreme OzBargainer of the year. :P

        • a few weeks to be exact not a few days :)

      • True, you will also save $4 latter on. But if the price goes up, you fill up with less petrol for your $4. Does make a difference.

        • But you're missing the point, either you pay $10 cash or use the card now. The only gain from using the card now is being able to use the cash for something else, or get a few millicents of interest for it. So either you save $4 now or save $4 later. You still can fill up, unless you're so broke that you don't have $10 cash.

        • mate, you just make simple thing become complicated, it is 40% off on that $10 gift card. time is the value of the money, so its better you use asap your gift card asap. you got $6 that sitting idle not giving you any benefit.

        • But there's no point wasting time and petrol going to the servo just to spend it. The value of $6 is not $6, but rather as you yourself admit, the interest you could earn on it. I already saved $4 by buying it so a fraction of a cent is chicken feed compared to the saving I already made. My time is worth more a fraction of a cent. I certainly hope yours is too.

        • i m not that stupid travelling far just to fill my tank, i do plan what i do, if i don't passed that servo, i won't fill my petrol over there, i always calculate the distance and my time as well. if you did (travelling far) for the sake to use that gift card, yes it is stupid and waste of time. but if you lived close by and have the same direction, better use that gift card rather than sitting idle, and again i prefer save my $4 in the bank. never underestimate a fraction of cents. if you got spare 5 cents, i m happy to take your 5 cents, just transfer to my paypal account. and I m more than happy if 10 million Australia population did the same thing.

        • I think you are obsessed over this gift card idea. It was clear from the beginning that the savings are not actually $4 or $6 or $10 but the interest on the money.

I know the gift card represents money I could be using, but I'm not going to go out of my way just to use it, that would actually waste more money. The next time I fill up at Woolies I will use it, don't worry about that. I also accept that it's not possible to plan perfectly and save every cent. There are more important things in life.

        • it is double impact, by using asap then you don't waste the idle time on the gift cards. never mind if you don't understand lol

        • I don't think we actually disagree, but you are obsessed with minor effects. Here are the scenarios:

          1. If you have the card, and you are near a servo with cheap petrol, then obviously spend it.

          2. If you forgot to take the card with you, then the next best thing you can do is to fill up the tank using cash, and not to give up buying petrol, like bigticket mistakenly assumes. As I have shown, delaying using the card will only lose you a fraction of a cent in foregone interest.

          3. Going out of your way to fill up just to use the card is a losing strategy because you spend more time and money trying to avoid foregoing a minuscule amount of interest on the value of the card. This is the path I'm not going to take.

You fail to distinguish between two deals. The cheap petrol is a deal. The card is a separate deal but that is already over. If you meant to remind people to use the card, which is what I think you originally intended, that's fine. But what I'm saying is even if you forget to use the card for this deal, you only lose a tiny amount of foregone interest.

I certainly hope you give better balanced analyses to your clients at your job instead of obsessing over the small things.

  • To find the store with the lowest price, just google and it will link you to the NRMA website and show you the lowest price. I highly doubt this is the lowest price. Petrol prices have just dropped altogether.

  • +2

For those in WA you can always find the cheapest price using the state govt fuel watch site:

    http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/fuelwatch/pages/home.jspx

Fuel prices can only be changed once per day (usually 6am)

Fuel retailers also have to notify FuelWatch of their prices for tomorrow by 2.00pm allowing you to easily see when prices are about to go up.

An increase tomorrow means the price today is at the lowest point for a week as the graph shows: http://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/fuelwatch/pages/public/priceT…

    Makes fueling up much easier.

  • We are still getting shafted, Venezuela'ns pay only 0.03 cents per litre.

    • -1

How do you know that? Are they an oil producer? Thought it was an african country…

      • South America

      • A quick search on the Internet might make you look better. Answers: Yes, heavy subsidies. Yes. No.

  • +2

Just wanted to say this Caltex is consistently one of the lowest, if not lowest, petrol stations in Sydney (along with Caltex/Shell in Bass Hill).

I wouldn't say this is a 'today only' offer as they usually keep prices down regardless of other competitors jacking their prices up. Even OP says price is the same today and I filled up at this price last Wednesday afternoon (when they seem to change their pricing).

Edit: afternoon is when they seem to change, not Wednesday.

  • motormouth is good to show the prices daily. I aske them the efficiency ratio of E10 vs unleaded vs 91 vs 95 vs 98 so that we could compare litres in terms of their efficiency and work out which was best value for money. if we take say 98 as 100%, then we could discount the prices of the others by sutiable disounts to work out their efficiency and then determine which fuel is reall the best to buy in biggest fuel efficiency per $/litre paid. never found this info anywhere else.
if we had a table which discounts each fuel type and then plug in the figures [raw] for fuels, we could then decide to buy say unleaded or 95 sometimes becaue of their relative pricing.
I suspect NRMA uses motormouth data and rebrands their results.

    • +1

I'm sure it isn't that easy. The motor you have in your car and the fuel type it is tuned to use is a big factor.

  • -1

    e10 111.7cents/l is 17 cents less than 98
    ulp 11.1 cents
    91
    95 4 cents
    98 is 128.9

so does it make sense to buy e10 vs unleaded and pay the extra?
the same decision applies to each other level up.

if we knew such factors of efficiency in theory, we could apply them to estimate it to all cars.

    • again …..

I'm sure it isn't that easy. The motor you have in your car and the fuel type it is tuned to use is a big factor.

  • +2

    E10 should be cheaper.

E10 sucks. so glad this isn't something available in WA

  • +1

I saw E10 for $1.01 at a an independent in Long Jetty yesterday.

  • +2

It was ~$1.15 everywhere last week in my area… FOR A DAY. Then it went back over $1.30.

Even the servo guy was excited about the price!

  • Rather fill my tank with piss than E10.

    • +2

Is that an OzBargainer saving tip? :)

      • You get more mileage out of ULP than you do with E10, so work out the maths, and yeah it might be.

        • +1

I don't think we can get E0 here anymore.

  • Edit, double post.

  • petrol is still 147 up here in cairns

    • Holy ****. You're getting ripped off really badly. Its been like $1.30 down here in Melbourne for a few weeks now. I just filled up today for $1.23

  • -1

Have to pay ME to put that crap in my car. FAIL

    • -1

love to have you live in anywhere in the world where e10 is mandatory

  • ULP is much better value at 117.7, there's really no sense in stuffing your tank full of non combustible liquids.

    • -2

      wut?

ethanol is very much combustible, it has a higher energy output then standard hydrocarbons. Its why its used in many drag/high performance cars.

      • +2

        That would be "Methanol"

        • -1

No Ethanol is used in alot of drag cars as well, and in alot of racing applications, hell my old XR6T used to be only run on E85, which is a 85% ethanol blend fuel, so i could run more boost.

        • Yeh, E10 isn't going anywhere near my car..

        • Cool story bro, let me guess, you heard it from a mate of a mate whos brothers uncles left cousin had a bad experience with it?

  • +2

Omg I'm going to save $10, your my hero. Now I can buy a packet of cigarettes!!

  • +1

Im gonna hurry and drive up to Sydney right now!!!

    • +1

unless you're haulin a tanker on the back i don't think it's worth it!
