How to Get Rid of Neighbours on Dirt Bikes?

Hi OzB.

I have a few neighbours across the street who constantly ride their dirt bikes along the road + at the nearby park. It usually happens after work 4-6 pm and on the weekends. Besides the noise, it causes it sometimes causes near misses of cars reversing especially when they're flying down the street.

I have a neighbour on house on my left that have cameras installed and they are also quite annoyed at the presence of the bikes.

The bikes do not have licence plates.

I've already made requests to the council and police but I think unless something goes wrong they probably don't care about it.

Any creative solutions anyone can recommend? I don't think bikies count here….

Yeah, they are going to tell OP to "F off" at best and then OP will become a target.

Yep, they've continued to do it, but they've done it less on the street (They used to speed down with cars until a few police cars showed up a couple months ago) The last time I tried was around a month ago.

Have you asked them directly yet?

Hahaha… yeah,. cause a family with dirt bikes riding them illegally are always open to suggestions on how to curb their 2 wheeled fun… that in no way would make you a target for them when the police do finally catch up with them. They wont suspect it was you at all…

If I were you, I would spend a few weeks covering the entire street and sidewalk with about 6 inches of dog pooh. Then they will not really enjoy going there, because their bikes will become coated in dog pooh.

    • definition of shet hitting the fan.

      Better yet oil the road.

    • Does the poo have to be dog poo?

Usually the police hate unlicenced motorbikes with a passion so give them a call with some video/photos

I've got plenty on my phone and home cameras. I've tried crimestoppers maybe 2 months ago, no response.

Try non emergency line to report people driving unregistered bikes in a dangerous manner

Record it on video, clearly showing them doing illegal shit. Document times and dates with start and finish times, who it was, what they were wearing and what bikes they were riding (description is fine, ie: Dad wearing red helmet, riding large, yellow bike and a son wearing green helmet on small, green bike.)

Visit the closest police station and ask to speak to highway patrol, if there is no highway patrol run from there, ask them who would cover that area and go there instead. Discuss your concerns with the officers and show them any proof you have and frame it as a "public road safety issue" not "but they are noisy and annoy me" issue. "Safety" is the key word here.

Remember, make it about "road safety", not about noise, or wildlife damage or pollution, "road safety". Get the coppers hooked on the possibility of handing out large fines. HP love handing out fines… helps their "quotas".

Dont bother with council, they wont give a (fropanity). Best they will do is issue a "please dont ride on crown land" notice or come out and just ask them to put their bikes away, which they will do for about a day.

And, whatever you do, do NOT booby trap anything. No oil on the path, no wire between trees, no digging huge ruts, burying logs/boulders or anything. If they do come off and get seriously hurt and it was found to be through an action you had, you can be in a lot of shit.

Okay, I'll start documenting with dates, I've only got videos and photos, timestamped but just attend the police station and show them?

      • +3

Get some information you can show them. This shows that you are proactive about "safety" and will make their job a lot easier. Cops dont want to be sitting around for 2 hours waiting for an off chance that these guys might go for a blat. If you can narrow the time down for them, they will be more willing to come past if they can slot it into their routine. giving them times and descriptions helps them narrow it down much faster.

If you take a lot of info for them, they will be interested in it, but wont really be able to use it on its own merit, the cops will still need to catch these guys red handed.

And remember… It's all about "road safety" (not noise and annoying)

Source: I am currently working with police on similar issues around my local school where the same people are speeding and/or parking dangerously and/or generally being a menace to road safety and the above is what the HP guys asked me to start getting information on. (Description of car/driver, dates/time of offending, what offence was being committed)

    • This is a decent post despite the claim of "quotas" - I've got a few mates who are/were police and they don't have quotas. It's a misnomer which needs to be set straight. The vast majority of police are really decent people.

When my son and I get our dirt bikes out for a ride the neighbours come and join us on theirs.

I guess it just depends on where you live.

I had this problem but it was all hours of the night + clapped out Falcons and Commodores… I moved once my lease was up.

The police arrested a few of them. But by the next week they were back and doing it again.

I hope you find a solution or they (profanity) off.

  • OP, the police won't be able to help you if you frame your complaint as "noise and nuisance", unless perhaps if it's after 11pm or midnight on weekends. They will refer you to your council that could call on the Environment Protection Act. If the council sloths could be bothered.
The police may act if there is someone breaking the law e.g. speeding, illegal stunts on public land (not on private property), driving unlicensed, unregistered, no helmet, minors on the bikes on public roads etc. Keep things in writing. e.g. send the police/council a letter/email signed by everyone affected in the street.
There is a petition on change.org to ban dirt bikes within 500m of residential properties. Like they stand a chance, but one can only hope in situations like this. I've heard countless stories of neighbours from hell and it seems like not much anyone can do about it. Dogs barking all night long, cars revving under your window every day, noisy parties, you name it.

I've already made requests to the … police

Tried that here. Police said the absence of number plates means they can't identify them, and they can't chase kids on bikes because they'd be in too much trouble if the kid on the bike crashed and injured themself.

You saw the case in the media today did you? Aboriginal kid gets high on meth, police see the car he was driving that had previous "come to their attention", they initially chase him, then quickly call it off because of the way he was driving, but he crosses onto the wrong side of the motorway, crashes into a tree and dies. Coroner blames police. Family blames police. ABC blames police. Everyone says the police have got to stop doing this before they kill someone else.

      That’s pathetic…

  • call the cops….just say theyre riding "monkey bikes". bish bosh done.

  • As well as getting police involved in the safety issue, Post an anonymous printed snail mail letter with "Police & council notified of your dangerous riding in OUR street - you're being watched" on it.

The element of the street watching them may get the paranoia flowing and make them realise that their fun is over. Might be the best $1.00 you spend……or better still, make it a xmas card(card only) to screw with their 3 brain cells.😁

  • Record them in action, go to the police station by your self and talk to them of this nuisance. I’m sure after seeing this they will be interested to pay a visit

  • Ask if you can join them, it can be a lot of fun…

  • Not expensive Jap or Euro bikes either, I'll bet.
Cold comfort in the reality their Chinabikes will snap/dissolve/lose tune/spark as they're cheap enough to cobble together from other discarded examples.
They'll all be EV soon. Same principle should apply if they're unlicensed and non-ADR bikes.
If you don't hear a bike in the street, is it there?

  • Sleep with their mother so you can tell them next time they are on their bikes?

There was a post on FB back in September about cracking down on unregistered bikes… namely Operation Rolling Boulder.
Not sure if this link is visible but the post states reporting activity to Crimestoppers.. https://bddy.me/3B2tBlf
