AmEx Bonus Offers - are they Getting Worse

Howdy,

I've been watching the Amex bonus point deals in the hope they would get better towards the end of the year, but it seems their bonuses aren't as good as they used to be?

I was in Amex jail when they dropped last year's deal and this year all the offers seem to just be standard.

Just want to see if others have noticed the same with Amex lately? Still itching to get one but have fear of fomo if a great offer is just around the corner (which I know, we can't predict)

I gave up on Amex years ago.
      Few retailers actually accept them
      None prefer them
And the credit card surcharge is always much higher with Amex.
The only time they were good is when they were the only ones to offer a GOLD card.
And also when they were the only ones with a good rewards program.
Amex were well ahead of the game back then.
But now everyone offers a GOLD card and even a PLATINUM card.
And rewards programs to boot everywhere.
Hence I see no real value or benefits in having an Amex card any more

      • You're missing out IMO

  • Yep… Been not so good in past few years

  • Worse and worse. I'm getting so many alcohol deals like huh

They must have gotten a hold of your personal health profile from the Medibank Private data breach…

      • Well that makes me a bit happier. Since it means they mixed my info up with someone else; I don't drink

  • Never thought they were good, rarely provided me an offer that I could take advantage of. The only ones I've redeemed were a Mcdonalds and a Chemist Warehouse offer.

Even shop small has being munted

Started with $20 per shop and last time it was $5.

    • And this time (last month) was win one million points if you Shop Small …

    • Considering what $20 could buy you 5 years ago vs what $5 can buy you today its an even worse deal.

    • It was for marketing and getting small retailers to accept Amex which has greatly improved. Job done

  • So so bad.

  • getting worse but also more targetted. it seems if you have used offers u get worse and less.

three different cards and the offers are all slightly different. i.e nesspresso. one was spend 60 another spend 100 for 15
and one didnt get it at all

  • You mean the intro bonus points yea? They have fallen significantly - but I suspect it is the Frequent Flyer programs becoming more expensive and charging Amex more as the demand for flights and flight redemptions have skyrocketed.

The biggest was still the 240k bonus for the Explorer last year. Wow that deal was bonkers… glad my wife was on it (I was in jail time too):

    No

  • To be fair, this was expected. There was no way they could be running the same promos (remember spend $300 at Harvey Norman, get $100 back?) all the time.

It is a shame that shop small got affected too though, it was a good feeling to spend a bit more at local cafes.

    • got an xbox one s for 200.

sold that for 275 this year

      that's after 6 years!

  • Amex good old days have gone!
Harvey Norman spend $300 get $100 back.
HCF, spend 3 times get $100 back
Hilton spend $300 get $120 back
Shopsmall, spend $20 get $10 back up to 5 times.
Platinum Edge card: complimentary one Virgin return flight per year. 3pts / $1 spend on super market.
Explorer card + Edge card combo: 2 pts / $1 spend on everything.

It all started when Julia Gillard came along capping fees. She pretended she was helping the consumers but really she was helping the big 4 banks. I knew at the time that Amex had a completely different business model to the others, Where it’s customers and vendors paid more, but we’re more loyal. Businesses accepted Amex because Amex customers were statistically very loyal. But after Amex was capped, its business model no longer worked and they changed. It was Gillard serving the big 4.
