Is It Bad Etiquette to Contact More than One Breeder for The Same Dog Breed?

I'd like to get a dog (and yes, I've posted before about wanting to get a dog) but now I've narrowed my ideal breed down to a rarer one, it's small, like a maltese type dog, and there are only 4 breeders in Australia.

I've already contacted one but I have to go on a waiting list and the earliest puppies are mid 2023 and maybe a bit later.

Is it bad etiquette to contact another breeder for this breed to see what their waiting list is like? And should I tell the 2nd breeder I've already made contact with the first, for full disclosure, since there are only 4 breeders?

No, it's not. You do you. But it's good etiquette to let the first know if you manage to procure one from second and no longer need to be on their waiting list.

    • Thanks :-)

If there's only four breeders, chances are that they all talk to each other anyway (unless they've had a falling out).

    • That's what I was thinking.

unless they've had a falling out

Trust me, if there are only 4 breeders or a niche dog, they have all had a falling out already… It comes with the territory with weirdo dog breeders and the less of them there are, the more messed up they are.

Just rescue a bloody dog and move on FFS

    • +1

That doesn't help if you are looking for a specific breed or want a puppy.

      • You'd be surprised how many pures get dumped, people are (profanity).

        • +1

You won't know for sure if they are pure though if they are a rescue dog.

OP has been obsessing for 12 months about this little tea cup dog.

If they just rescued a suitable dog they could have spent the last 12 months with a really good, appreciative, loving friend and enjoying life together.

about this little tea cup dog.

          Sorry, I had no idea.

          I thought it was a real dog…

        • +1

It's not a tea cup dog. I do not want to rescue a staffi or bull mastiff.

@tulip99: You think you’re too good for a rescue staffy or bully?
They’re both great breeds providing some trash tier yobo hasn’t broken them.

            • +1

@mapax: I'm not the right person for those breeds.

          • @tulip99: There's hundreds of other options for rescues, you don't have to get a staffy or bull mastiff.

            • +2

@Ozymandias: Not in my area in Tasmania

              • +2

@tulip99: A quick search of some of the rescue homes around Tasmania show four kelpies, two border collie crosses, two beagles, a German shepherd cross, a pointer cross, two husky crosses, a Smithfield, and a spaniel. I get if you're rural and find it hard to travel around, but it sounds like you're going to some lengths to get a purebred as it is.

          • @tulip99: There are dozens of breeds waiting for a new home… not just staffis or mastiffs….

specially now with all the arse holes who bought a cute doggy when covid hit, now the dogs are unwanted.

Awwww! A rescue?? But I really want a purebred Cavalabraretreiverborderdoodle Shephardschnauzer…

      • Lol. I don't think op ever released the specific breed in previous posts. They were super secretive for some weird reason. They also keep their mobile phone turned off and at the other end of the house so they don't die. You get the idea.

        • I know the next post after they get this dog will be "How do I register my dog as a support animal so I can take it into the library, supermarkets and my favorite restaurant…"

          • +8

            @pegaxs: I was thinking…
"My rare dog has medical issues, is high maintenance, hates me and probably has cancer after chewing my mobile phone. Is it rude to ask for my money back?"

        • You got that right!

    Why would it be?

I think it's called shopping around. Dog breeders are fundamentally no different to any other business … they can either provide you with the "best offer" or they can't.

I wouldn't think twice about contacting multiples.

Rare breed sounds like some rare and expensive vet bills in your future.

What's the Toyota equivalent for dogs?

      Kelpie!

We have a rescue Kelpie x Border Collie. He is now approximately 12 years old. We've had him 10 years. He didn't know how to walk on a lead when we got him and the rescue centre concluded he was likely tethered his whole life before being rescued. After a few months of consistent work (they are quick learners) he has been the best dog in the world. His loyalty borders on sickening and only wants to please his family. He is generally lazy but does enjoy a good walk. He only barks when there is definitely something odd or out of order. When he barks we know it needs our attention (we live on a hobby farm). He has no medical issues and lives life to his fullest and gives the family so much in return. He cost $150. Today he is priceless. Love ya Gilbert, my little Toyota Camry with tissue box on the parcel shelf.

Give Gilbert a pat for me, he sounds like a goodest boy.

Something from the RSPCA pound that is a staffy mix

Not necessarily. Every dog can have issues. Some have more than others, but generally smaller dogs live longer so more bang for your buck I guess?

you'll probably pay a waiting list fee, so if you're comfortable doing that and then cancelling (losing the fee) then go ahead.

Trust me, the breeder will have NO trouble selling the dog if you choose to not get it.

Google Rescue Dogs = sad to see that many places with dumped dogs

    https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=rescue+do…

You may even find one of pegaxs' purebred Cavalabraretreiverborderdoodle Shephardschnauzer…

  • no that's business

  • No… and for this reason alone: There are so few puppies that there is a waiting list, so if you cancel the next person will step in within a second.

They aren't talking about you tbh, they are competing with each other to be the top breeder and to out-do the competition.
