  • Does 0% interest for 12 month mean i can essentially use as much as my limit allows and then pay at the end of 12 months?

    • You will still need to pay minimum payment I believe. Only 0% interest for the 12 months.

    • Interesting hey.

    • You will still need to pay a minimum payment.

      This.

Also, it would mess with your credit utilization ratio if this credit limit >30% of your total credit limit.

      • if this credit limit >30% of your total credit limit.

        Can you elaborate ?

The credit limit is set when you apply - it's got nothing to do with what you spend over the 12 months ?

        • Sorry, let me clarify, at the end of each statement if they report >30% balance, of the available credit limit across all credit cards e.g. AMEX $10000, ANZ $20000 so total $30k and your balance is >$9k, then your credit score will take a hit, so it wouldn't be wise not clearing your card every month if the balance >30% of your total limit (across all cards).

          • @FrugalDealSeeker: That's fascinating !

I always pay all my cards off in full every month, as does probably every other OzBargainer - but on the odd occassion, I might put something massive like an overseas holiday onto my card, and then pay it over two statements instead of just the one. Just an example, but I had no idea that rolling over a large spend for more than a single statement could affect credit score 🤯

            • @Nom: I learnt the upto 55 days interest free the hard way. I bought a car on my CC while I was waiting for a tax refund, just one day before my statement cycle so I had only till next cycle i.e. ~30 days. Not only was I hit with like $15 interest, my score was also smashed by around 50 points… Recovered in 2-3 months though but still it was sad. :(

  • From what I can see from the ad, yes, but better to double-check with Amex.

There are few other with a longer interest free period and lesser annual fee ( for 2nd year).
Obviously this one has CR of $140

    • What is CR of $140?

    • You are looking at different things. 0% on balance transfer is not the same as 0% on Purchases

      • These ones are not BT but 0% on purchases.

    • Is there any 0% with a sign on bonus?

    Also get $200 travel voucher.

    • how do you get this?

      • There's a travel section in the Amex app. It will pop up as a credit there

      • It’s a standard inclusion with this card. Renews annually.

    • What happens if you use this before 12 months and cancel and don’t pay second year $195 fee?

      • I have the same question and intent

      • +1

You save $195 thats all. Every 12 months the travel credit resets, you pay annual fee and get another $200 travel credit

I applied for amex twice but both time got rejected. However the main question is that why there are many places that do not accept amex? Would it be a wise choice for me to apply for amex again even though there are not many places accept it?

    • My experience has been opposite. Most supermarkets, electronics stores, petrol stations accept Amex. For everything else, use mastercard. Amex isn't meant to be your primary card. Just a points and benefits churner.

    • Amex charges higher fees than Visa and Mastercard.

Like what? This is 0% interest and no fee for the first 12 months with a $200 travel voucher.

        • Card Merchant fees are charged to the Merchant (The store)
Visa and Mastercard credit cards: 1% to 1.5%,
American Express credit cards: 1.5% to 2%,
          EFTPOS: Usually less than 0.5%,
Visa and Mastercard debit cards: 0.5%

With some stores negotiating different rates depending on volume (ie woolworths wont be paying 2%)

i used to have this, it was a great card in it's heyday with the free return flight between capital cities. The $200 travel credit barely covers one way these days.

    • +1

      Yeah those were good times.

    • Been tempted to grab the Velocity platinum, or whichever card it is, with the return flight that they still have. At $350 it’s no where near as good a deal as this card was with the return flight and twice the points conversion compared to what is applied nowadays, but pretty sure I’d still be ahead on that return flight annually.

  • Thanks OP!

Confirming that we can't use the referral links if we want to use Cashrewards, right?

  • Had this card for 5+ years.

It's gone to stink. Shop small?? Anyone seen it?

    • Yeah, I've received a lot of cash back from Shop small offer. Many local stores were part of it. I believe that the offer expired March 31.

I have the free white coloured American express card and I love it. Earn enough points to fetch ~$50 every month i.e. based on earning1 point per $

    For new cardholder only.

Just saw this on their T&C:
'Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.'
