Since joining the corporate world, had pretty wild Christmas parties. Ranging from ballrooms with string quartets to nightclubs. Always free food and booze. I still don't really know if work Christmas parties are a good idea though. You are bound by workplace rules, and at the same time they're loading everyone up with alcohol. Not exactly a recipe for success. If no one gets fired afterwards I would be kinda surprised.

Chris Smith is reading your comment, wishing he never went

      • …wishing he never went

Wishing he had behaved appropriately, more like it.

Perhaps this is to find out which employees can be relied upon to act like adults and which revert to being teenagers with no self control.

  • Does Your Work Have a Christmas Party Gig?

We have a whole Terabyte this year…

  • I've had the full gamut of function types over the years.
The only types I have enjoyed are those held during business hours, particularly when it is possible to leave early. I'd rather spend my time with family and friends than with "colleagues".

    • Hit the nail on the head. If I'm getting paid, I'm there, if not, no thanks.

      • Dunno.. best chrissy gig we had was at a posh golf club… 3 course meals, free booze, DJ playing sounds all night….
but that was 15yrs ago… I'd only been there 3 mths at the time lol!

We are taking a boat ride to a resort and having a feed, beers and swim this week, going go karting next week, all on work time.

Corporate, next to none are organising big Christmas parties outside of the office this year due to multiple recent high profile events.

The days a CEO or COO can get blotto and grope their PA at a Xmas function, blame it on the booze Monday and be promptly fully forgiven and forgotten, are gone. And rightly so.

  • We usually have a dinner function for employees and partners (office and field staff), 400-500 people. The last two years was cancelled due to covid (office staff had a BBQ in the carpark and field staff had their own mini celebrations on site I think) so this year was the first year back (hello superspreader event!).

We've had a mix of sit down dinners and cocktail (food stations and roaming wait staff with canapes), fairly fancy, so I think it's nice that the company does it. I usually just hang out with a few good friends who I work with and if they didn't go then I probably wouldn't either.

Flown to Sydney to party for a few hours on an island in Darling Harbour, including 2 nights at a hotel. Was an amazing experience as I've never attended something that grand before. Partners and children were allowed, Santa gave kiddos gifts. Endless supply of food and booze, along with live music.

In my previous corporate life it was just a pre booked 3 course dinner with drinks that were normally cut off way before midnight.

    • Out of interest, what sector are you in?

      • +1

IT. To clarify, the company has staff Australia wide, celebrations in NSW as that's where head office is.
It was the first proper Christmas party since covid hit, however they've rented the same island prior. According to other staff who've been around longer, the most recent party was above all others.
We also had a 3 day conference prior to Christmas party, so more accommodation, food and booze during that time.

  • cab charge to get home

All employers should be doing this, especially when there’s a lot of alcohol at the function.
