I own this - good TV

    • +1

too much light reflection, a part from that, everything is good

      • Yup. 95K is much better

        • +2

way more expensive. 90K is good enough for my needs, if they made the screen matt or anti-glare, it would be great

          • +1

@ntt: Agree with you as I couldn’t justify paying $2.5K more.

      • too much light reflection,

Except 2022 The Frame, I think all LED TV have light reflection.

        • +2

my previous LED doesn't have reflection that bad

          • @ntt: That was the only comment that was holding me back and I was really wanting to get a 85 inch to replace the one I have now (65 inch).

            • +1

@Timetraveler: As i said, beside that, everything else is nice. This 75" price is amazing

  • This or sammy qn90b ?

    • -2

Lmao does samsung have google tv??

      • +1

Who cares. Qn90b is a quality Mini Led with far better local dimming and brighter.. Beats it in every category on top of lower input lag. Has freesync, vrr. four 2.1 ports as opposed to 2. Handles viewing angles and reflections far better.

If it's at a similar price range. There's no reason outside of google os. Then again if you have something like nvidia shield, chrome cast (with google tv.) etc. Why?

        • +2

Qn90b is great in all ways except one. The rainbow reflections. I returned mine because of this. It's super distracting when watching tv. Search for this problem on YouTube to see what I mean.

          • @redrider: Just checked it. Never really heard much about that. Guess it makes it a situational TV. Since it's more of a dark room TV & you lose out on the benefits of a non led TV. Which is how good they are in bright rooms.

          • @redrider: rainbow effect

I think only happened with direct sunlight onto it.

            • @superforever: It's not true. It worst from lights on the side eg. in another room. Direct reflections is not an issue. Sunlight is not a big issue either. To test, go to a retailer and shine your iPhone flash light from the side. Not directly in front, you should see a rainbow streak across the tv.

If they removed the film on the tv that causes this, it would be an extremely good TV

    • +1

I would get this TV at this price point.

    • +2

      Sony.

    • +2

QN90B is mini LED and this is full array, I will get QN90B if the same price.

      • Qn90b was 2450 from samsung…

        • Qn90b was 2450 from samsung…

I will get this if the same price range.

        • Where are you getting it for 2450?

          • @dhingranuj: That was a black friday deal with 30% coupon on top of that from Samsung Direct. I'm waiting to see if they repeat it for Boxing Day sales

    • +1

I have the 65inch version of this TV and its great. Sony does a great job with a relatively small local dimming zone count (using the medium dimming setting) and Sony picture processing is top notch (very little adjustment needed out of the box).

The presence of Dolby Vision (there is a growing amount of streaming content in vision) and Android TV (neither of which samsung have) would be the other things that would tip it over the line for me.

      • Qn90b is a quality Mini Led with far better local dimming and brighter.. Beats it in every category on top of lower input lag, faster response time
. Has freesync, vrr. four 2.1 ports as opposed to 2. Handles viewing angles and reflections far better. Wider color gamut.

If it's at a similar price range. There's no reason outside of google os.. Then again if you have something like nvidia shield, chrome cast (with google tv.) etc. Why? Just for dolby vision. The local dimming? Deeper blacks, wider color gamut, brighter & better hdr, + many more. Far more than make up for lack of Dolby Vision.

The local dimming is decent for an Led. Still no comparison.

        https://www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/sony-x90k-vs-samsung…

        • QN90b? What price are you seeing for that in Australia? doesn’t seem like the same price range at all from the listings I’m seeing and for those sort of prices you’re in oled territory and Mini Led vs oled is a different discussion.

  • +1

Will this work with the Series X (as in tick all the HDR / BS new lingo boxes)?

    • Yes.

    • Don't quote me on this as I don't own a series x. I have watched some YouTube reviews about this tv and seems to remember that this tv can only do 4k VRR or 4k Dolby vision but not both at the same time.

  • +3

I have the 75 x90j. Excellent TV, this is good price. Pull the trigger.

    • +1

      Agreed

    • +1

      Pull the trigger.

Pull the trigger or bite the bullet, which is better?

      • +1

        Jump on the grenade.

  • +3

anyone have experience using Aus consumer guarantees to get repairs on TVs like this outside of warranty? 12 month stated warranty on a $2.4k purchase is a bit eh IMO, doesnt give me confidence if something goes wrong

    • +4

I did that many years ago with Samsung, a few months outside of warranty, they replaced the panel free.

      • +1

I have the 55 from 4 years ago. Had problems just over 2 years and Sony authorised repair. I did put problem on YouTube asking for help and send them the link. Updated it when they helped me.

      • +4

Sony replaced my panel 6 years later if that counts for anything. Loyal sony customer for life

    • +2

Yes, I've had good results up to 5 years on a lower end TV. When I'm calm and stand my ground. As a mid range tv I would give myself 7 years or so with choice saying 8 years is a reasonable expectation. I found the trick is to remind yourself to get quieter and speak at a lower volume as you get more assertive so they can't accuse you of yelling. Ha

      • fascinating and good tips thanks

  • Still cant decide, this or c835. Big brand vs Mini Led. Went to have a look but not side by side couldn’t see the difference, both amazing. C835 will save me a few hundred though….

    • +1

I'm in the same boat, hoping for the C835 to drop to $2k again for boxing day!

    • -1

Go with the Sony for a few hundred more. It's hard to tell in store but once you get it home you will appreciate the picture and motion handling of the Sony.

      • +1

        But how about mini Led?

        • -1

It seems like there is more to the story than the number of dimming zones. The algorithms used to manage the dimming can be just as important and Sony has some of the best (sort of why the get away with what seems like a small number of zones).

The other thing with TCL (and Hisense from what I've read) is that we don't get the same version of the TV model that you see reviews for overseas. The few local reviews I have found seem pretty good (https://cybershack.com.au/reviews/tcl-c835-mini-led-tv-bang-…) but I sort of don't trust companies shipping the same model the world over when the Australian version seems to be cut back (in some cases).

I've had good experience with Sony TV's and the reviews you see are a reliable description of what you get so I keep going back.

          • +2

@Gregulah: Thanks mate for your input. Indeed I am aware of Hisense is terriblely misleading people by sending inferrior products to us while badging the same model number, the USA ones are much better. But if you go deep into the specs description you can still see they are "truly" stating the real specs though, otherwise it will breach the law for false advertising, but I will stay away from them anyway.

I rekon TCL is not doing this as all models having the same specs despite different markets, and haven't seen anyone said anything (yet).
You are right good algorism is a game changer I probably go and have a second close look this weekend then make a final decision.

          • +1

@Gregulah: TCL use to do that way back. But haven't for years. The only frustrating thing now is that they have different names. E.G R655 is C835. Except they use Roku TV in US for the new model. Which is a game breaker. As the Google TV drives it far better & allows for way better calibration & if you want, can swap the OS for Android tv too.

Something needs to be done about Hisense. As they are selling subpar tv's with the same name as many have mentioned.

          • @Gregulah: In regards to the algorithms. It's hard to judge Sony's. As the X95k is infamous for it's blooming. With 85 inch being the only one that does decent. While 65 & 75 inch are really subpar. And that's with way more dimming zones than the X90k. The X90J is arguably better than the K. And that's the older model. The X90J was a great model.

            • +1

@Phinxx: Practical experience with the x90k for me and I’m not really noticing much in the way of blooming, reading the rtings review makes it sound horrendous but in real content I’m not really seeing any. I’m coming from the x90e which was a solid TV but you would definitely notice blooming the moment you had subtitles in a dark scene hdr, not seeing that on the new set.

That being set reviewers obviously get to spend a lot of time with much more expensive sets like the a95k that I wanted, obviously not more blooming versus an oled no matter the algorithm. In the end couldn’t justify the stubbornly high price (even $4000 on sale recently), decided I couldn’t justify double the cost (vs the 90k on sale).

Not sure if the high local dimming vs medium made much of a difference in the rtings review but I’ve always found medium works better (per advice from HDTVTest).

        • +1

And the speakers…. the Onkyo "seems" nice… never get a chance to hear it in person!

I guess C835 (at least 75") is out of stock in Australia and who know how long they have new stock again :(

Still holding on a brunch of GG for a new TV!

    • +2

Buy the C835. Better TV even though its TCL. I have the Sony 75 x90j and would biy the C835 if given the choice. Definitely.

      • How does this compare to LG 75QNED85 .
Both C835 and LG QNED 85 are mini led tv’s.

        • isnt 75QNED85 much more expensive? 1k?

      • Just before black friday there were killer deals for the C835. Got mine for round $1276 -65 inch. Taking into account TCL cash back & GG storecash it goes to $1100/ Some got the 75inch for around $1600. It was sold out in most areas near me :/.

        • soo good

    • I had same dilemma and ended up with c835.

To my untrained eye the c835 is excellent. Reviews are also putting it as best value TV. Australia also has 3 year warranty on the TLC.

However I have heard the motion and upscaling on the Sony is better. If the better brand is going to chew at you, get the Sony for peace of mind.

      • +1

Shocking to hear Sony is ONLY providing 1-year warranty. ACCC is doing nothing about this? Apple products have 2-year warranty thanks to ACCC.

    • +1

I tried both. It depends what you value and if both are around the same price.

Picture quality wise, c835 is more impressive. It's both brighter and darker when needed. If you use an external tv box like apple tv and watch a lot of streaming videos on HDR/dolby vision, c835 is really good at its price point.

Sony shines on FTA contents. I watched world cup on both, and Sony seems to be better on this front. Colour looks more natural and action seems smooth. I didn't even need to do much adjustment in setting. The tv guide is smoother compared to the Freeview on TCL too. Freeview just looks so blurry and out of place.

Software wise, Sony is also much more polished compared to TCL. It feels like Sony spent a lot more time in building on top of Google tv while TCL just made some changes here and there. You can change a lot of setting via a quick menu on the fly while you will need to go deeper into the menu in TCL to do a lot of same changes.

      • +1

wow! I do have a 4k apple tv for Netflix and PS5 casual gaming (no FPS though), slow A/RPG mainly, not much FTA. Probably C835 is a better fit then

    • Went to have a look but not side by side couldn’t see the difference

Same here. I have an older TCL TV (series 6 base model) which has been fine for my needs. I'm looking to replace my second TV with my existing TCL and replace that with something new and shiny. After looking at tons of reviews AND checking them out in store, the TCL c835 looks just as good as even an LG or Sony OLED to me. I'm sure someone in a lab can tell you why name brands are better, but if I can't tell why would I spend the extra $$$?

      • Holy…thats a million worth question I can’t answer that at all now I know which one I should be buying. 👍👍

  • no code for the XR65X90K yet :(

  • +1

Bought this on Black Friday sales. Happy with it in general but I do have a slight annoyance with the blue tint on objects like the white of the eyeball, teeth, white shirts, and in some scenes the background lights coming in from windows. Although I've adjusted picture settings to "warm" colours, I still can see this bit of blue tint. The speakers are meh. 😞

    • Are you using the expert colour setting? It's the warmest and most accurate out of the box. Try a 6500k led bias light behind your tv to see if that helps your colour perception as your next option (cheaper than going down the calibration rabbit hole).

  • +1

I’m 99% certain sony are the only led/lcd with full array local dimming to support vrr as well.

Ie local dimming on + vrr on at the same time, last i checked other brands can’t only have 1 or the other…

makes a massive difference for console gaming

    • I think the TCL c835 also has this.

      • the only led/lcd with full array local dimming

C835 uses mini led backlight so it's different.

  • Another 3% cashback with shopback brings it down to $2331.31

  • +3

So conflicted - do I hold off for a boxing day sale on the 85X90K?

    • Hisense NO

      • Why?

        • Hisense aren't bad per se, but definitely mid tier at best. I'd expect you'd get better upscaling and image quality on the Sony

  • Should I use my total $270 worth of GG gift card from buying a C835 before Black Friday and get this to replace my 6yo Panasonic 65" Firefox OS TV? Other than a bit slow it is still going strong…

    • hows the c835? cant find many reviews but its what im leaning towards

  • +1

Its a fairly chunky TV at 7.3cm in depth. Might wait for the Samsung or LG miniLED to drop to the same price roughly in a sale

    • I got jb to price match qned85 mini led tv for around 2790 and paid with gift cards . So total cost out of pocket 2.5k.

      • Who did you price match with? Which store Jb price matched to?

        • Video pro I guess

          • @glenf: Or appliance central. Both were similarly priced on Black Friday! Hope this helps.

  • I just tried a price match with Appliances Online and they said the price is lower than their cost price.

  • I own this tv.
    IMO it's really good.
Like all android tvs enter developer mode and get rid of animations to make the fast ecosystem faster

  • Shopback have 3% cashback + 10% bonus cashback (max $50) for using a linked Westpac card.

(assuming it works with the 20% off code - which I think it does?)

  • Damn I'd get this if Sony didn't switch to this garbage google TV crap.

    • +1

Everybody want Google TV, what do you prefer?

      • Something that doesn't track my every move

    • people that complain about os have no idea!

who the hell buys an expensive tv to use the default os?

appletv 4k with dobly vision is what everyone should have to enjoy the best PQ

Or at the very least another external device that can run apps

      • I'm on the Nvidia shield tv pro boat for top PQ, performance, gamestream & upscaling.
