Fined for Stopping in a Bus Zone - What Does The Sign Say?

I've receive a penalty notice because my car (registered to me anyway) was stopped in a bus zone in Cronulla. It looks like a fair cop and it looks like the only way out would be if the bus zone didn't apply at that time/day.

The photo available courtesy of Service NSW is as clear as mud and the same sign has changed from what is displayed in Google or Apple maps.

Does anyone local to the area know what the sign says? I am interested in the bus zone information on the right side of the sign near 33 Gerrale St, Cronulla.

I don't live anywhere near there. TIA.

  • How much?

  • You haven't told us the time of day you were pinged, but if that image is from your dashcam and it was during the day then duh, the bus zone is likely active.

    Guilty as charged. /thread

    • having a guess that the beach is on the right
and from the shadow of the bike, it was around 2 to 3 pm.
sign looks like 5 to 8am
      and 6 to 8pm

      or something like that
but also their might have been words under the numbers like weekdays

only thing is no one else is parked there. cronulla is crazy busy on a weekend at that time. u kinda guess locals know u cant park there

      Google Maps location:

Assuming the bus routes haven't significantly changed, the sign obviously covers the period from 7 to 7pm in both the Mon-Fri and Sat-Sun brackets.

You still didn't tell us the time of offence.

That's quite a reasonable assumption, I'll have to agree with you on that!

That won't change what the sign says.

        • Anyone can go to transportnsw.info and lookup the bus routes for that specific stop. The ones that start before 6am and go to after 8pm.

THEREFORE, the bus stop MUST have signage prohibiting parking when there are any active buses, and if the offence period is within any of the scheduled bus times, you have committed an offence even if you can't read the sign.

We can only assume you are indeed guilty of this since, you won't disclose the time on your ticket for us to prove that you are guilty.

Are you finished wasting our time yet?

  • This image is from what I could download from "Revenue NSW". The offence was on a Sunday so the only way out would be if the bus zone hours were different on that day of the week. There appear to be multiple times written on the sign but I can't make it out.

    This will be interesting…

Can't see why they would have issued the fine if outside of hours.. good luck anyway 👍

    • Yes, I am pretty sure that they would know the local parking restrictions pretty well!

Not that it changes anything, but I noticed that the photo seems to have been taken from inside a car. The penalty notice was on behalf of the local council, so I thought all officers would be on foot.

  • I would've thought , a bus zone is a bus zone . No excuses , unless NSW is different to Victoria

There's different exclusion times depending on the signage..ok to park there out of hours

Could just be the angle but is the car parked in the works zone or the bus zone (assuming that's ops white SUV in the supplied image)?

    • They provided a second photo from the other direction showing that my car was clearly in the bus zone. The driver stopped there to pick someone up (an offence in a bus zone) and had gone before they they took the posted photo of the sign two minutes later. I didn't post this other photo because the sign wasn't visible.

If it is any consolation, the last bus on Sunday is the 985 that gets there at 19:32 (985 goes until 20:30 on Saturday.) as it’s last run on Sunday evening. So the bus zone would last at least until after that bus for the day.

The 987 starts at 7:45 on Sunday, (7am on Sat.) so again, the start time would have to be before that.

My guess is something like 6am till 9pm Sat Sun.

Thanks, that makes sense. It's an expensive lesson for my son!

Fvcks sake. You’re in the wrong, stop trying to worm your way out of it. Take some responsibility for your own actions.

  • You are unlikely to get out of it if they e sent a fine. If you really need to know exactly what on the sign, go for a drive and read it or get someone to get a clear photo.

Teach your son to read signs more carefully
