So my eldest is about to enter High School and needing to purchase an iPad - have access to j hifi education portal but just wondering best ways to maximise savings be it via gift cards etc.

Any input would be greatly welcomed

  • I’ve recently purchased an iPad for same reason. I found that JBHifi had no stock until early to mid January so purchased through Apple Education store (similar discount).

If you don’t need it immediately you could wait to see if there are any cash back offers (Cash Rewards or Shop Back) around Boxing Day. You could also check if any refurb deals.

    • Did you need show any proof you were eligible to purchase from the store? I’m wanting to purchase from there also.

Nope no proof of student ID required to buy from Apple edu store.

  • It says in the terms and conditions you may need to provide proof. I ordered online and it’ll be delivered so don’t expect them to ask for proof. Also if you don’t do engraving then delivery times seem really fast, like next business day (depending on area).

  • iPads are required for kids in school now? From which grade onwards?

      Apparently a naplan requirement…

      • +2

Not a Naplan requirement at all thats your school trying to pass the buck.

    • Years ago Uni of Adelaide made iPads compulsory. I don't know if they still are, but back then they were given to students and came pre-loaded with digital versions of all the textbooks you need.

      • You don't need an ipad to get digital versions of textbooks, just a browser.

    • Isn't mandatory anywhere I know, but they work as a decent substitute to a laptop. May not run all compatible apps needed but depends on the subject

Shouldn't a high schooler need a proper laptop? If I were you I would double check about the iPad before committing any funds. Don't rely on what your kid told you, find official documentation. My understanding is kids use iPads in primary, and laptops in high school.

This is correct, further it is detrimental as they will need a proper notebook at the senior school level (10,11,12) and if they've only ever used iPads they won't have any concept of a file system or how to work a computer effectively.

Laptop > iPad for high school. iPad is more of a content consuming device, Laptop can do word processing, excel, has a proper keyboard and mouse etc.

    • iPad has all of those things and will work with any bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

      • +3

iPad has all of those things

iPad versions of MS Office are cut down versions. Not the same.

      • It'll just provide endless frustration for the kid when the teacher says, click this menu then this option and enable this, and the kid had to spend half the class time googling how to enable that option in the iPad or online version of the software.

        • Surely if the whole class is using iPad then the teacher would be too.

          • @AustriaBargain: That's true, but I have my doubts they are actually supposed to have an iPad. I think maybe the kid wants an iPad for Christmas, and has told their parents they need it for school to increase the likelihood that it happens. And like you, figures they can do most of what they need for school on an iPad anyway.

No ipad for high school. Check school recommendations.

  • My grandchildren required iPads from Grade 1 and MacBooks from years 7-8, you lucky you only need an iPad for high school. If you wait until after xmas and prior to school starting Apple usually have free airPods with iPad or laptop purchase and usually high cashrewards offer at the same time in both education store and apple store. Last year I purchased an iPad Air and received airPods 2 and nearly $100 in Cashrewards.

      and MacBooks from years 7-8

      That's terrible.

      Did you complain?

      • Can't complain it's a requirement and will be required again when the second one starts in 2024.

Wth, haven't heard any case where the school requires all Apple products like that. You can get past more than fine with laptops half the cost

      • Some schools have their customised MacOS image that is installed onto device making it safer for younger kids. My son's school does that.

The previous school was adamant to purchase an over-priced crappy windows laptop from a specific supplier.

Then go to a school that allows BYOD.

          • @jv: easy-peasy!

      • It's more common than you think, as they use a lot of the apple apps for their schoolwork.

        • a lot of the apple apps for their schoolwork.

          Tik tok?

  • good refurbished available here and here. this one in particular is a steal.

couple that with this deal for touchpad keyboard case and all sorted!

I just came here to say that I preferred your original post title!

  • Annoying that it has to be an iPad. Is it possible to do a Android tablet version of a Hackintosh like people used to do for desktops back in the day?

  • Students starting year 7 with an ipad gen 9 , would this see them through to year 12 ? (6 years). Hoping end of life for the gen 9 will be 6-7 years.

    • As above, iPad is more for primary school. High-schoolers need a proper laptop. If not now then soon.

  • Students all over the world are using iPads now for the apps Good Notes and Noteability. In University, it's very popular but also good to start using planner and note taking in highschool.

The top school in Brisbane, Brisbane State High uses iPad. Kids don't need note books. Everything is done on iPad. It will hold all your work for every subject from Grade 7-12. It will hold all your revision notes for every subject. No bulky books.

If you buy ATAR study notes, it's usually done on goodnotes by students that achieved 99+ ATAR.

It's really good to get them on goodnotes and planner early as they will need it in university anyway especially for health courses.

If only I had this when I was in HS and Uni.
