Best Location to Exhange Currency? (NSW)

Hi, I'm planning to go to Thailand and Japan next month, so I wonder if is there any good place in Sydney to exchange for THB and JPY?
Thanks in advance :D

You always exchange AUD at the destination.

At the Airport just exchange a small amount of AUD for taxi , etc and find a small currency exchange counter nearby your hotel/shopping centre, etc. You get the best rates at those and most certainly not from banks.

Just check the rates at few of these shops and go with the one offering the best rate. However DON'T let a "friendly stranger" take you to this place offering the best rates in town - This advice is for Thailand BTW

Dont bother changing any in Sydney as the rates are horrible.

Change some at the airport, then the rest at a major shopping centre. Avoid all small forex shops in dark alleyways.

Always count the cash in front of them once handed over. What scammers will do is that count it in front of you, then slip one (or more) out upon handing it over.

If you're flying into BKK change money downstairs near the train station. Heaps of booths exchanging and the famous Super Rich one is there too.
If you land in DMK all crappy rates if I remember corectly easier just pulling from the ATM if you have ING card. And Don't expect a taxi to change a 500 or 1000 note. Buy something at 7/11 so you have small money before getting in a cab.

Change your AUD into JPY before you leave. The rate in Japan to convert AUD notes is about 10% from the interbank rate, in Australia it is about 4%-4 1/2%

Just use AUD overseas, thats what I do. If they don't want to accept it, go elsewhere.

  • I have the citibank plus debit card and usually find a citibank ATM (no fees) to withdraw from. These are usually scarce though but definitely exist in most countries.

    • I previously used 28 degrees card, then citibank plus debit card. But not I just use an orange everyday debit card, No foreign exchange fee and the ATM fees are also refunded as long as you jump the monthly ING interest rate hurdles. ($1000 deposit, 5 transactions).

  • Any suggestions for Noumea? Going early next year and apparently mostly use cash, CFP. Do they even have ATMs there?

If you are intent on taking cash rather than using ATM (foreign card withdrawal fee is about $9 per transaction in Thailand unless you have a card like ING that reimburses you), change $100 at the airport.

Then go to Vasu Exchange on Sukhumvit (you can go to Superrich but there are always long queues and the rate is no better), convert your money to baht there, and ask to convert your dollars to yen.

Right now you'll receive 88,358 yen at Vasu for $1000. $1000 at the spot rate is 88,617 so you lose about $3 on converting $1000 to yen at Vasu.

  • i exchange when i get there at a casino. they always give me the highest exchange rate
