Best Way to Buy a PS5 - Discounted Gift Cards, or Something Else?

Hi OZB,

Ignoring availability and "Bundle vs Vanilla" discussions for a moment, what's the best (ie. cheapest) way to buy a PS5?
I don't want to buy from Joe-on-the-street-corner as I want a receipt for warranty purposes, so would want to buy from one of the big retailers.
I saw the 10-15% discount TCN vouchers recently, that feels like a good way of going about this?
At 15% discount, and the current $30-off-$250 coupon at JB (maybe), I can get the $800 PS5 for <$700 (hurray for better-than-launch-retail price).
Any other ideas?

The JB perks excludes consoles so yes the TCN 15% will be the best you can get..

Unless you sign up to a phone plan through JB Telstra and get up to a $500 GC to put towards..

  • Alternatively sign up for a trial for everyday extras trial and receive 3 x points when purchasing through big w. Purchase discounted gift cards at minimum 5% off.

  • Do you have a PS4 Pro to trade-in maybe? Got 44% off my PS5 by trading one in at launch.

The best way would have been through discounted gift cards. However, it sounds like you didn’t actually purchase any discounted TCN or Ultimate gift cards recently, so you have missed the boat…

    • The 15% off TCN gift card deal at Coles would have been the cheapest way to get a PS5 (through JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys anyway), but the issue is that deal generally only happens once a year around Black Friday, plus stock of gift cards would be extremely hard to find.

    • The 15% off Ultimate gift card deals at Coles and Australia Post would have also been the cheapest way to get a PS5 (through JB Hi-Fi or EB Games or The Good Guys anyway), but the issue is those kinds of deals generally only happens once or twice a year around Black Friday and early December, plus stock would be hard to find.

Even the 10% off Ultimate gift card deals (the last of which ended at Woolworths last night) tends to happen in the second of the calendar year, so I would expect it to not happen again for at least a few more months (at least for the Ultimate gift cards redeemable at JB Hi-Fi).

There could be 10% off TCN gift card deals within the next couple of months at a retailer, but I would not hold your breath either.

If you’re not fussed about upfront discounts and instead don’t mind bonus Flybuys or Everyday Rewards points, there may be a deal coming up in the next couple of months at Coles or Woolworths or BIG W where you can bonus points on purchasing an Ultimate or TCN gift card. However, bonus points for a rewards scheme is not exactly everyone’s cup of tea (and I get it).

There are still some gift card portals that sell Ultimate gift cards or TCN gift cards or JB Hi-Fi gift cards at an upfront discount everyday, but it is nothing too exciting, which is where other routes (e.g. the one @Slinky0111 mentioned above) becomes more appealing…

    • Ah, well, that was quite the answer, thank you kindly.
Pity I missed out on the gift card deals. I'll keep a look out though.

  • Some BigW's have them on stock. Go to your local and ask them to have a look

  • Thanks for all the answers, muchly appreciated.

  • Off topic but please let me know, if I ask for price match in JB hifi. Does that have a bad effect on employees? because I asked a staff member to do it last night, and they were uncomfortable, they said something blah blah blah that I didn't understand and went away. really confused.

  • 15% from giftcards, getting staff discount and 10% from TRSing it plus buying it from jbhifi for perks

    • there was that bundle from eBay that was a pretty good deal if youre into god of war. worth reading the comments to stack a bigger discount for another controller iirc
