Best International Travel Debit Card

I'm looking to travel overseas to Taiwan and Europe, and I'm interested in getting an international travel debit card with good exchange rates as well as low conversion and transfer fees.

So far, I've read about options such as Wise, Revolut, HSBC Global Money Debit Card and Citibank Plus. However, I would like to hear other people's experiences and suggestions on international travel debit cards.

I use Wise. Green card = physical card and the digital card.
I also use the Wise green card to collect cash from any overseas ATM with reasonable fees.

    • Likewise, used it in the US a month ago and was pretty good.

Try search forum, same question is raised about every fortnight.

    also, in no particular order;
    Macquarie Bank
    Up
    UBank
    Bankwest
    Suncorp

    nothing from the big 4.

    • Bankwest is owned by cba, so that's the closest thing to BIG4 options

Nowadays it's more like BIG5 though since Mac is bigger than some of the others.

ING Orange Everyday is the only card that returns international ATM fee up to 5 times a month. A few small hoops to jump through every month but nothing arduous.

Be wary that ING now charges an international ATM fee themselves on top. So even if the foreign ATM you use has no fee, ING will charge you, reimburse it and count it towards your 5.

I was not aware of that. Sneaky sneaky.

      • so a withdrawal from a foreign ATM can end up using 2 free rebates?! one from the atm operator and another one from ING

        • Nup, you get both rebated but thankfully it still only counts as one

          • @Wowza: ING has always charged an ATM fee on top of the operator fee but if you meet the conditions it's waived and if you've met the conditions the ATM operator fee is also waived for up to 5 per month.

After the five operator reimbursement the ING fee continues to be in reimbursed into the next conditions window the following month.

Also, always have a backup card from a different bank. I've had my debit cards blocked by banks a number of times even though I've informed the bank before travelling.
most banks make them call you when something happens. with waiting times nowadays call fees can rack up unless you use wifi calling or something similar.

Each bank has its own Fraud detection system, and some easily get triggered and blocks the card compared to others.

  • This questions asked all the time and there's a wiki article that helps you compare options here
