I cant see any cheaper. I missing something?

      http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=120Gb+Intel+520…

        • +15

Fair enough, just like an Audi is a bad deal because a Great Wall is cheaper?

        • +8

You can't compare different brands to this intel 520… they may both be 120gb capacity, but not as reliable…

It's like saying "Hey this BMW is on special!" "Nah mate, look, you can get that hyundai getz for much cheaper"

You know in all test it shows the intel to be the most reliable SSD in the market, hence why it has a high premium price tag, this is actually cheap compared to others on static ice. The only once to come a little close to it is the samsung SSD. But Intel SSD's clean and defrag as it goes along, it doesn't collect and trash after it becomes overwhelmed. You get what you pay for and Intel is the best.

      • Samsung is just as reliable if not more

Is that why the samsungs have a 3 year warranty & intel has 5?

        • +7

Company Overheads. just like Toyota/Mazda VS hyundai/Kia… a Toyota/Mazda should last longer even with 3 years vs the 5 years on the other two.

Just a simple search on Newegg/Amazon over 40+ buyer comments you'll find 5% have had DEAD on arrival or failed Intel 330 and intel 520 SSD drives

ZERO dead Samsung 830 (256GB) drives! As a matter of fact you will not find a single DEAD 256GB Samsung 830 SSD drive posted anywhere on Amazon, newegg or any forum.. but you will find HEAPPSSS of dead intel drives very easily from unhappy buyers… Just because its intel doesn't mean its unbreakable.

This could be because they have only been on the market 6 months but meh more happy buyers then intel

Any deals for 240 or larger?

  • I'm after 180GB. Anything?

  • +1

I guess most who want the 520 for 256bit encryption would have heard about this… but if not read this!

I wonder how many people who paid the early adopter tax will take advantage of the refund offer, then repurchase at the lower prices? ;)

    • The bigger problem with the encryption is it's virtually unusable to consumer end users because of near-nonexistent documentation and multiple practical issues in the implementation:

      http://communities.intel.com/thread/20537

Unfortunately it's no TrueCrypt/DiskCryptor/etc. substitute, yet (which is a real pity, since there's no performance hit with the built-in SSD encryption).

Paypal surcharge is against Paypal's terms of service btw.

    https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/marketingweb?cmd=_render-c…

Sellers may not charge a surcharge for accepting PayPal as a payment method.

    • hmmm dodgie

      • +6

Heaps of sellers are doing it, but I notice that Paypal is conveniently not rushing to police their own terms of service! :s

    • +2

That statement only applies to Ebay listing.

4.2 Use of PayPal on eBay. Sellers who offer PayPal as a payment method in their eBay listings must follow these requirements:

Accept PayPal if the eBay listing includes PayPal as a payment method.

Accept all PayPal Payment Methods from a buyer, including but not limited to eCheck and credit cards.
Accept international PayPal transactions if the eBay listing offers shipping outside the U.S.

Sellers may not charge a surcharge for accepting PayPal as a payment method.

Unless there is a more general statement that applies to all types of listings, I think NetPlus hasn't done anything wrong here.

EDIT: Further down, there is a clause which talks about surcharges which could imply NetPlus is in breach of the terms if a surcharge is applied.

4.6 No Surcharges. You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as a payment method. You may charge a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge and is not higher than the handling fee you charge for non-PayPal transactions.

      • Look under where it says no surcharge. about a header or 2 below your comment
        Yep thats the one.

      • Looks like you found it, ninja edit!

  • I spent $145 on the 120GB 330 series version of this two days ago, where were you then NetPlus, damn you! :)

  • Is this the 7mm or the 9.5mm model?

    • According to Newegg product details, it shows 9.5mm. I did a search on the product code SSDSC2CW120A3K5 and got that.

    • Both.
With the black plastic piece on it's 9.5mm. Removing the black piece makes it a 7mm. 4 screws to remove.

      • Oh, ok, it comes with the spacer then. Thanks for the finding.

How do these actually compare to other brands? Worth the extra $$?

I knew Intel SSDs were one of the best, and wasn't too sure about Samsung SSDs. Until I read this: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?271063-SS…

In essence, Samsung 830 > Intel 520 at this stage (YMMV of course) but doesn't mean Intel 520 is crap either.

    • On close inspection, the Samsung 830 being tested is a much larger capacity drive compared to the Intel. That's why it's currently number one in rank.

Need to take into account size of the SSD when comparing drive endurance. I'm sure he did, but that information doesn't show on that graph.
