Are Tesla Price Drops Coming?

So I’m in the market for a new car and I’m considering EVs as my first choice.

I saw this - Tesla shares tank after doubling U.S. discounts on key models and wondered if people think Tesla price drops will be coming down under as well? Given it’s been a good 12 months of price increases, maybe it’s time to drop?

I do note BYD recently upped their Atto prices by 3800 bucks which was a shock given it’s only been on market for less than a year.

I dunno maybe we should ask Martin ebarhard.
Australia should start using it's renewable resources to build a verity of sectors, Australia was supposed to be the Dubai of the world but it just reinforces that image of bidden groping zelensky.

    • +1

Why do you think Dubai is an example anyone should copy ?

WHy you want to copy a country that treats workers from places like India as slaves in all but name, holding onto the passports, so they cant complain about anything and treat them as sub humans ?

      • Emotional intelligence is weak with this one.

        • +1

Are you denying the human rights abuses in places like Dubai ?

How about you grow up and actually challenge my statements instead of calling me names… that is of course if you have the brains to actually talk like an adult instead of a stupid 5 year old Nelson Munce.

          • @CowFrogHorse: There are human rights abuses in Dubai but they are also rich as F**k.
So each cancels the other out, you might say.

Australian society like most of the wolrd is stupid. Making people commute for hours a day is not productive in any sense. Sitting 20 hours a day on a car or bullet train is not productive in anyway.

      • -1

Looks like you offended a dumb ass.

      • I know many ppl who use public transport or their own human power to go to work and of course more ppl work from home now.

I’m not sure you mean 20hrs a day; perhaps you mean a week, and you’d be right.

I’m sure it could be made productive working on a train. How but free wifi on all buses and trains???

Just saw a news article on the Shanghai factory being shut down. Reason given was covid among workers. Can’t see that contributing to increase supply to meet demand and therefore drop prices.

    • -2

Reason given was covid among workers

I saw an article as well, but said the real reason, is due to low demand. And that tbe covid excuse was exactly that, an excuse as they’ve worked though government lockdowns and more restrictive conditions in the past.

Prices will only drop when they have a competitor that is cheaper and better. Right now there isn't one unfortunately.

Wait for the charging infrastructure to be bare minimal functional and serviceable before outlaying $$ into it. In the meantime if you're considering a usable vehicle for the next 5-10 years go with a hybrid so it won't leave you stranded somewhere sometime.

A while ago, I did the poll for Ioniq5 vs Model Y as we had both + ICE Outlander. Sold Ioniq5.

In terms of pricing, Tesla has it right for now. At around $76K for Model Y, you get a large pseudo SUV which is great for (small) family hauling tasks. No one talks about Tech. I used to scoff at it and now wonder why other Manufacturers haven’t caught up.

Tesla does change you perception of what a car should be. Model Y is a large car with sports car like handling, no servicing costs and tech like no other.

In comparison, you might get a Kluger, Outlander, Sorrento or Palisade etc. Great long distance cruisers and large family haulers but they do cost a bit in ownership and city running is expensive.

I don’t think they will reduce the price as there is plenty of demand and potential for them to expand to other markets like India or Africa where they are there yet with the current production rate.

In my view, if you do little long distance travel and a lot of city travel, Outlander PHEV should be on the list. It can travel upto 82Kms on EV and then engine kicks in (unlike hybrids). Might be our next one when replacing current Outlander if we can find one.

    • +4

I’ve thought long and hard about PHEV, but their pricing seems so close to a pure EV I feel like I may as well just pay the extra and get an EV.

  • OP please keep waiting for prices to drop.
It will help the rest of us who want to buy one.

    • Anyone who “wants” to buy one by definition is waiting to buy one. Or else you would be buying one.

If you want an EV why do you want a Tesla? It feels like so many cars are coming out this year that are better value than Tesla's or if they are in the same class, better.

Personally can't wait for the 2024 line up of EVs seems to be the time point where a lot more options will be on the market that will be cheaper and better range.

    • I agree with this point but one thing that cannot be argued against is the supercharger network.

Tesla is the only one with a reliable network. Reliable being the keyword here.

      • I guess it depends how often you are going to log massive road trips? If all lot, I guess Tesla. If not then others are good. A lot of new charging stations are going to be built in Australia in the next two years from the sounds of it.

Tesla are overpriced crap, check out some youtube vids on how bad the finishes are.

  • +2

IMO it won't drop anytime soon, there's still a demand for EVs and the battery is a costly part of the EV. Just replacing the battery will cost you a nice little fortune.

    • +1

Replacing the battery is a pretty rare occurrence. Maybe once there are lots of cars we’ll over 10 years old it’ll be an issue, but it’s not an issue yet.

  • +2

Mg m4 ev is cheapest which will b comin soon

    • That will go against the BYD dolphin which is rated better in China than the MG4.

      • Yes byd is better option as it also have solar panel on for battery

Catch a bus, tina you fat lard

In Europe typical new EV now costs about the same as ICE car, check out Dacia Spring for example, which is 21K EUR/33K AUD (Model 3 owners also say that Dacia is better quality too, but that's on them).

The tricky part though is that unless you have solar to charge it for free it does not work out much cheaper than petrol car even with current prices about 2EUR/L but comes with quite a few disadvantages. For example, public fast charger will cost you 0.65 EUR/kWh and charging from the grid is 0.35EUR/kWh.

I'm surprised you'd consider a Tesla given all the latest information about it.

    Seems terrible all around.

    • Whats the latest information? The few people a know that own Tesla's love them.

      • The ‘latest information’ is either Tesla quality control (old news) or Elon is a tool (also not so new)

  • Hopefully Twitter will drag Musk down into the pits, and take Tesla with him as well.

EVs need more and better competition rather than a business monopoly giant that relies on the love of foolish people

    • +1

There seems to be plenty of EV competition in other parts of the world. We’ve just been stuck with a backwards mindset, probably fueled by vehicle manufacturers. Manufacturers that are keen to offload their ICE vehicles knowing we’ll likely upgrade to EVs sooner than we would normally upgrade an ICE.

    • Every European manufacturer now makes EVs and they're quite inexpensive too, Tesla in Europe is about 7-8% of BEV/EV share these days.

    • But EVs wouldn’t be where they are except for Tesla.

      • -1

I actually believed that all ICE manufacturers will kill their BEV lines if Tesla goes bankrupt. While other dedicated BEV manufacturers are struggling to turn a profit therefore unlikely to scale up their BEV production soon.

        • No profit you say?

Renault City K-ZE is manufactured in China and costs there US$11,300.47. It's twin sibling Dacia Spring is sold in Europe starting at 21K EUR. That's a very healthy profit.

          • @[Deactivated]: Sure hope to see Darcia Spring or Renault City some soon to fill in the cheaper section of budgets EV asap. I thought Atto 3 is the minimum we will get in Australia

    • +1

So let's take away the company that has put EVs at the forefront, and this will somehow increase competition. What an ignorant comment. Many people (Including myself) want other options, however other EV brands are either not giving what we want, or giving us enough supply. Would much prefer an Ioniq 5 or an EV6, but the waiting time is over two years. Polestar 2 is available in a decent wait time, however the base model is front wheel drive, doesn't come with a heat pump, and has less range than the equivalent Tesla. I can't even test drive one here in SA. If Tesla went under, then it will become even harder to get decent EV options, as these other companies will no longer need to try to catch up.

      • Tesla is dominant player only in US (mostly because of established network of chargers) and it's market share already decreasing, in Europe Tesla sales halved in last year and now account to mere 5% of new EV sales market.

        • +2

Yes, and it shows competition is working. I'd imagine though that the open charger networks over there are quite decent. Here in AU the Tesla charging network is much better than the open ones. However, I'd think the latter would greatly improve in the coming years.

          • @noz: Tesla is like apple. Flashy, proprietary tech and charging, better than competition in some ways but largely the same. Competition will be cheaper and more universally compatible.

Unfortunately for Tesla, their figurehead is on the nose right now and will cost them more sales except for the diehard fans.

  • I think the prices will definitely go down in near future. Not just EVs but all cars, considering supply chains are recovering fast and there is reduction in demand due to rising global interest rates, which will have an impact on consumer spending.

    • I reckon they’d rather make fewer and sell at higher price than risk making a loss because they can’t sell them.

      • If they do that they would risk losing marketshare to competitors and their shares take a beating. Investors/analysts care more about sales numbers and future growth prospects than current margins.

        • It’s a delicate balance between selling as many as you can make and ending up wit a carpark full of unsold vehicles. I’d hate to be in charge of forecasting how many to make.

  • +1

Model Y price has dropped from $74,025 to $70,700.

  • 2023 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y prices rise in Australia

Australia's best-selling electric car – and its just-released SUV twin – have risen in price by up to $3902 after Luxury Car Tax, with wait times still between nine and 12 months.

that article is like last year and wrong lol, telsa has dropped prices…
