Cleaning Solution for Epson FastFoto Scanner

Epson have a cleaning kit for scanners that retails for $55.

I would prefer not to pay so much if I can avoid it and don't want to wait for it to be posted. Does anyone know what an equivalent solution might be?

I'm in the middle of scanning old photos, some of which have been removed from albums and other storage where they have adhesive type residue that will both jam and cause lines when they feed through the scanner. Apparently, alcohol wipes are a no-no.

Are you wanting to clean the scanner or the photos?

  • Common sense says use the flat bed not the ADF. What part do you need to clean?

    • Scanning part itself. The FastFoto is an automated, self-feeding scanner. I have thousands (maybe 10000) of photos to scan, so a flat bed is not suitable.

      • If it’s glass, an alcohol wipe should work.

        • +1

Do not get alcohol on plastic as it may dissolve the plastic. Not all plastic types will dissolve.

If in doubt just use distilled water you get from a supermarket.

          • @AndyC1: Yeah. Looking up cleaning scanners, the first thing said is NOT Alcohol for the reasons you stated. It also tends to leave glass streaky. I'm trying to clean the scanning elements themselves. The manual says to use the Epson cleaning solution, which is why I'm asking for a suitable alternative. I might just have to bite the bullet and order some.

            • @bigpallooka: A damp microfibre cloth won't cut it?

              • @Master Bates: There seems to be some sticky substance adhering to the sensors. I'll try again with your suggestion, then if unsuccessful I might try ordering the Epson cleaning solution.

  • Epsom Salts?

(it also claims a price drop)

    :-)

    • I know it is used for bathroom and pot cleaning. I have to be honest, I would be too nervous to use it around something so delicate. Only because I can't find any reference to it's use in a similar application.
