Any Tips on How to Guess Next Batch of Stuff in General from Various Companies?

Just wondering if people know any tips on how to guess next Best before/expiry dates of stuff to be released from companies ? e.g. lets say Milk as the easiest thing

e.g. You see expiry date of 27/12/2022
How do you guess the next expiry date, and when that would come in?

It will be at some point in the future

  • Interesting query. What are you trying to work out with this information?

    • How one should go around shopping for stuff with longest date
difference between date of purchase to expiry date/best before
      or
Best time to get the reduced stuff

There's so much stuff from amazon which they sell and even if you buy same stuff a month or so later it still comes with same expiry date.

It varies depending on your location, store policies, etc. anything I tell you here is anecdotal based on my experiences.

For example, I live in metro sydney and when I worked at coles (20 years ago) we would not sell milk that went off with less than 3 days. They would go to back to the supplier for credit (ie no discount on them, no exceptions)

These days milk gets sold at a discount when it’s close to expiry (same Coles), meaning that there is probably no more supplier credit

Rural Australia tends to have shorter expiry dates on milk because of logistics getting the milk there (again based on what I’ve seen and also by BIL who just happens to live in rural Australia and is a truckie that does milk runs)

Generally with milk expiry in Metro areas (I do buy a lot) you should get close to two weeks on its longest cycle, the time to use by can really vary depending on your location.

Again this is nothing more than anecdotal information based on my experiences.

Also, after writing all of this I’m sitting here wondering how the hell I know so much about milk!

  • Milk that you buy today should have a use by date of about January 6th.

  • Just assume 'use by' is a guide then food lasts a lot longer.

    • Definitely this! Milk is good until it tastes off, usually you’ve got a few more days after it’s use by but on very rare occasions it’s been shorter.

As long as it doesn’t taste off (and you know when milk is bad) you won’t get sick drinking milk past it’s ‘use by’

Bread has a best before date of 7 days after it is made.

  • When I was buying Pauls Zymil lactose-free milk I noticed the 1L cartons consistently had much longer Use By dates vs the 2L.
The stuff turned over pretty quick so it wouldn't have just been due to the 2L sitting in the fridge longer.
