Personal Superannuation Contribution Disallowed. Have $10k Debt to ATO

I just logged into myGov today to find out I have a $10k tax debt. After looking into the details, it seems to be due to my personal contribution to my super account I made in FY20/21 of $30k for the FHSS scheme. Yyes I realised it's only a maximum of $15k per FY. The wording from the tax notice is below.

Your deduction for personal superannuation contributions has been adjusted or disallowed because information
currently available does not support the amount you have claimed.

The $30k was made for the FHSS scheme which has since been withdrawn when I purchase I home in December 2021.

From what I can gather, it's likely that I may have forgotten to send the notice of intent correctly to my superannuation. Reason I said correctly is because I found it in my sent folder to a noreply address in my email. I don't know whether I has fixed this up at the time as it was so long ago.

I made another contribution the next financial year to make up the remaining $15k which I was able to find the response to say my NOI had been accepted in my super account. I did not find this for my $30k contribution.

What are my options here? $10k is a large amount the debt which I'm not in the position to pay at the moment.

Call the tax office and request a payment plan. I've heard they are very accommodating with these.

        • .. again with the GC…

@randomusername2017: Don't mention the gift cards and ATO joke. It's a trigger for some around here. They get upset about how it's overused and blah blah blah I don't have a sense of humour bulltish.

  • Sounds like you stuffed up big time…

    Thanks for letting us know…

    Happy 2023!!!

  • Try dodging it somehow, that’s the Aussie way.

Or do the right thing and you know, pay it.

  • Go see an accountant and see if you can make an adjustment to your earlier submitted tax return.

The ATO has already made the adjustment for them (via removing the invalid super deduction).

The only way to get the super deduction in there is having a notice from the super fund confirming it's a deduction, and you need to have that before you lodge.

Call the super fund and ask them if they can help you or ask your accountant or just pay the ATO and move on.

  • You’re happy to obtain the benefit right away but don’t wanna pay your bill. Righto.
