Boost Mobile vs Kogan Mobile 12 Month Plan

Currently near the end of my 365 day Kogan Mobile prepaid plan so having a looksie if there are any better options out there.
For reference, paid $130 (at 25% off sale) for it, gave me 230gb for 365 days ($10.83 / 19.17gb per month). Kogan uses Vodafone network so pretty sub par but completely worth the price.

Closest Kogan mobile deals right now-

In my experience so far, reception with vodafone network isn't always the best and speeds can fluctuate a lot. I have a pixel 3a so can only support up to 4G.
Realistically only used 200gb this year so really don't need more than that, tho 100gb would be too little.

I saw the Boost Mobile plan deal which is 12-Month 140GB for $170 ($40 Cashback via Cashrewards) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/745124
which would be $10.83 / 11.67gb per month after cashback. The 250gb plan is probably too much for me. Heard Boost has full telstra network coverage which for me is probably the reason I'd want to try it out. But also heard the customer service is trash and also porting issues.

Does anyone have experience with Boost and have any thoughts on if it would be worth switching from Kogan's vodafone network to Boost's telstra for a slightly worse cost per data? Or any other suggestions for better 365 day deals that could meet my needs?

Edit: I reside in northwest Sydney and travel into city occasionally so hopefully looking to hear some feedback from others in the area!

  • I personally choose boost over kogan because of the service and customer support. I prefer live chat and Kogan is always a pita to deal with, at least from my experience. Even if kogan is cheaper, I'd still recommend Boost (which is still cheaper than the competition from the big telcos)

I moved my wife from Boost to Kogan which at the time was half the cost but with more data… she wasn't happy.

Reasoning is that she's on the move more these days and Boost has better reception and she needs the bonus international calls that Boost has. She didn't tell me the latter when we were going over her needs. My fault for not asking.

So when her year with Kogan is up, I will move her back to Boost and put her on auto renewal.

Boost coverage drops out in my office building in Sydney.

    • Ooft which suburb if I may ask? is it likely due to concrete or is it bad around the building too

Go boost, Telstra network and 5g promo still going (they haven't diverted to 4g). Will have to get a third 365d one in the next month.

I can get away with lower GB data plans with home WiFi (and use the work one a bit), but would vary for everyone. Even on the higher data sim they are still way cheaper than most post paid plans.

""Does anyone have experience with Boost and have any thoughts ""

doesnt work like that, mobile provider is unique depending where you live and your travel pattern.
its like your mate's young hot gf is not necessarily good match for you.

Agree although Telstra should be the best coverage in more places and be the best bet, but the op should base it on which ones are good in his area, and then just a matter of how much data you need.

    • Haha agreed but hey, any helpful information is better than none, and sometimes a bigass net is more efficient than spearfishing :)

  • I'm on the same boat since the last ozbargain deal expired. I've been going thru heaps of boost mobile sim cards for data just for the cashback, haven't recharged with kogan yet.

Left Kogan because they still hadn't activated vOLTE - super annoying haiyaaaa

    • Kogan so weak! Haiyaaaa

    • Actually I think Vodafone finally added it this year, a quick search found https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/732388
It had been annoying me for a few years too and would have been a reason to switch but I double checked today and 4G no longer dropped while phone calling

  • I was with Kogan and switched to Circles.life due to being on the Optus network, which is better for my workplace. I never had issues with Kogan, the reception was pretty good where I was and they were trialing 5G when I left. One perk I miss with Kogan is visual voicemail with iPhone, made it a lot easier to check voicemail instead of calling up.

    • Optus (Circles) also has a similar Missed Call Service where the voicemail can be sent to you as MMS, filed under the contact, just hit play to hear it.

  • I've been with boost for 2 years. There seem to be a lot of fanboys for Boost on here but I was getting constant dropouts, especially indoors, in the metro area. I'm on a Kogan trial for a month and it seems to be more reliable.

I appreciate this may not be the case for country areas.

    • yeah all depends on black spots in your particular area and which network is the best.
Telstra would have done the same in that case i assume.

      • I think 5G may have something to do with it. I've got 5G at home and work but get the same so I wondered whether it has something to do with the weak signal strength of 5G

        • could try setting yout phone to use 4g and test

          • @G-rig: When 5G is weak do devices not automatically fallback to 4G?

    • Whereabouts in Aus if you don't mind me asking?

    • I am with Boost and have been having dropouts for more than a year now too. I couldn't tell whether the issue is my Samsung S21 Ultra phone (read some network dropout issues online) or the carrier though. And my problem started before they rolled out the 5G, so I'm stuck.

  • I am with boost and never had porting issues. Coverage is better than Aldi who also claims telstra network as i tested this in remote area we go to a lot when i swapped the family over. Never had to do any customer service so cant really comment on that. Have not tried Kogan as its Vodafone. Hope that helps.

    • Aldi does use the Telstra network, but it runs on their wholesale network. Boost Mobile is the only service provide that provides full access to their retail network which is probably why you noticed a difference in coverage.

  • Don't know if Kogan has WiFi calling but currently in Bali and Boost is great with Wi-Fi calling. No need to pay for international roaming. Can call back to Australia and receive call as if I never left, though have to add the +61 to numbers back home. Great provider.

    • Interesting! I just checked on my Pixel 3a call settings and looks like I have Wifi calling enabled with Kogan on vodafone network, so that's good to know.

  • boost all the way. voda network is not the best

  • I love boost been using it for years but I used up all my data on the Boost Mobile $300 plan with over 34 days to spare until the auto recharge so I got sucked into the Kogan Mobile Prepaid Voucher Code: EXTRA LARGE (365 Days FLEX | 500GB) because having no data is extremely noticeable for me so I panicked bought the Kogan equivalent but I am thinking maybe I should just recharge with Boost again but this 500GB for same price is tempting me hmm.. I am already loving Boost a lot and find no issues on it but then that means I have to now sell this one I just bought

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-prepaid-voucher-co…

Seems like a good deal but I am slowly recalling trying Kogan awhile ago and immediately hating it so maybe I made a $300 mistake ah well win some lose some

    • Sounds difficult..
Not sure who actually recharges, i just get another starter kit ($200 or $300) and transfer number to new one.

Mine expires soon, I've still got 90GB but assume can't keep that after 365 days.. waiting till end of month to activate this new one.

Boost is great..Never that keen on Optus or Voda Sims. However 500GB is a lot.
