i wonder what machines would be good with this type of mask?

  • -2

Only nasal masks are gonna work.

    • +4

      wrong

  • -3

Resmed Airfit P10 is the best mask, nothing else compares.

Next in line, has it's pros and cons, is the Philips Dreamwear "Under the Nose". Can lose it's seal occasionally though. That's why they also make this mask in a nasal pillow style, similar to the Resmed Airfit P10.

Still, the Airfit P10 is the winner.

If your nose doesn't work properly, sort that out with meds and/or surgery.

    • +2

If you breathe through your mouth like I do the P10 is basically worthless. Only a full face is going to work properly.

      • -1

That's why you should get it sorted out. I did. Took me way too long to pull the trigger. Life changing. Your Cpap compliance and comfort will be amazing too.

        • But my nose works fine?

I just breathe through my mouth while I'm asleep.

      • P10 was my first mask and while I'd love to agree with you, it can end up giving you some soreness around the bottom of your nostrils where the pillows press against the cartilage. I used one for a year then switched to the N20. It only bothers me when I want to read in bed before falling asleep.

I tried all except the F20/full face stuff and I'll be sticking with the N20 for as long as I need a machine, quite honestly.

        • -1

I don't have this problem at all. You don't even have to keep the straps all that tight.

      • Mouth tape or chinstraps can stop mouth breathing.

    • Ha yeah I struggled with the p10/n20. I gave it a go but my wife and kid kept wanting to talk after I had it on, soon as I open my lips air wants to go through my nose and out my mouth. Very uncomfortable feeling.

I liked the f30 as it covered mouth and nose without covering full face, but after about two weeks the area under my nose started getting irritated.

I went F20 in the end but the rubber gave me a rash. So here I am with the stupidly priced unwashable F20 foam cushion. I can still have a short convo after I put it on and can choose between breathing through mouth and nose. I tend to switch between the two depending how I am sleeping.

    • i've got a resmed and mixed it with the philips dreamwear pillow nose. for some random reason, i woke up with this gew all over my face. the 2 silicon pillow popped and went everywhere. i then bought the p30i but found that with no silicon rim, it puts sharp pressure on the nose and sometimes when u move, it makes it feel real awkward after a period of time.

These also work well as cricket protectors..

  • in all seriousness is this mask adequate or deemed as a full face mask? im certainly interested in looking into this, my wife said i stop breathing 10 times a night… not a subject i really like to discuss but i have heard if you neglect it, it can be the cause of an early death.

    • +5

my wife said i stop breathing 10 times a night…

      You're lucky.

My wife would keep that to herself…

      • +1

i think she likes the money… for now.

You should get this checked out. You may qualify for a free Sleep study. You might discover you actually stop breathing a lot more than that.

You will need a whole machine to go with the mask. Private health fund may pay for some if you have a letter from your doctor.

Are you qualified to five out medical advice?

        • +4

Sharing personal experience. But I’m also a GP

          • -3

@tai gui le: Which GP? Albert Park?

            • +1

@jv: Nothing wrong with recommending one for the sake of data points if you meet some criteria, symptom wise.

Non medicare funded sleep studies (choice of home kit or overnight study at a facility) are around $180 dollars and you can just ask your doctor.

In the last several years, sleep study tech has really grown, to the point you can take a kit home, follow a video to set it up, sleep in your own bed, then pack everything up and return the kit.
              It's all quite seamless.

For more complicated disorders like narcolepsy, there's a bit more involved.

      • You may qualify for a free Sleep study

Sleep studies can be done for free through the public system, but the waiting list can be years.

        • Not true, can be organised within a week or two.

To meet the medicare criteria for a fully subsidised sleep study, you have to say you're basically dying on the screening exam at the Doctor. There's no need to do that when it's so cheap these days, just get a referral and pay for it yourself.

        • Most places will organise a Medicare rebated study for you if you meet the criteria. You can do a home study. Can usually organise within a few days to a week.

Here’s a link to a sample form from the CPAP clinic.
Anyone can fill it out for themselves. Tells you the criteria at the bottom. Tick the boxes and see if you qualify. Not sure absolutely, but I think you only need to satisfy one “set” of criteria to qualify.

          • @tai gui le: I found out about that after I went to get a CPAP machine, as the clinic I went to did home studies. Instead my doctor sent me public and it took about 15 months to get diagnosed, this was also before COVID.

    • You can also rent / trial the device from resmed for $35pw. During the trial you can try an unlimited number of mask combos and during the trial they give you a wireless machine where the sleep tech tracks your usage / issues and they give you a call to discuss any issues.

I tried a heap of masks and different sizes until I found the style and size that worked for me.

    • Kate Winslet held her breath for seven minutes and survived just fine, so I wouldn’t be too worried

    • Sounds like sleep apnea, get a sleep study done asap. They cost less than $200, I did one 2 months ago and now have a CPAP

    • +2

Start the process. We, men especially, live with/ignore these things until it's too late. We are all slightly different physiologically, such as our neck structure, but all of our bodily systems and processes need to be in their equilibrium so we don't overload one point in that process to its eventual failure.

I am about to get CPAP as one element in a few changes I need to make to make my life better from day to day and for longer. When I started researching and watching reviews one thing that was surprising was the people presenting aren't often the physical representation of who you would assume to be CPAP users.

  • Those looking at full face masks need to consider carefully before getting these. I started with the F30i and it takes a long time to barely get used to it. You'll feel claustrophobic, rashes around the mouth and the seal leaks around the chin, especially if you drool. I wake up atleast once during the night not from choking up air but from the irritation from the mask. I'm now looking to buy a nasal mask to try.

  • I use the Fisher Paykel Simplus. THis looks like it might be a similar fit.

    • simplus is good mask, the mask firmly cover over the face and seal better IMO. however, you don't want to wakeup with pressing mark over your forehead. F20 is probably the replacement so far.

  • +1

if your new to this mask thing. i personally found full face masks to create a pressure point just below my bottom lip. so much so it made it impossible to sleep and ended up bruising me. have had Waaaay better success with the Nasal pillow "masks"

    • The Professer who dealt with me, said full face masks are junk (for many reasons) and to use nasal only.

The only time he said a face mask was appropriate, was when either having nose surgery or when you couldn't breathe through your nose for some reason. Even then, he said you'd take meds or whatever else if it was an ongoing thing.

I had nose surgery at the beginning of this year and only went without using my nasal mask for one evening.

  • This place has free standard shipping, plus a bonus pack of wipes and another cushion.
