  • How come it can be powerful if only getting power from usb A? With sub as well

    • +1

I have these and you are right, the sub does basically nothing imo.

      • Not sure how you have it setup. But you won't get much wattage if you plug it into the computer. USB-A's max output is 5V/0.9A (4.5watts) and that's best case scenario if you have a spare USB3.0 port.
If you plug it into a USB2.0 port you will be getting 5V/0.5A max (2.5watts).

        • Interesting, thanks. Not sure what USB port I had it into but I got sick of the cable nightmare from it either way so its sitting to the side packed up now.

        • What if we plug it to some anker dekstop charger 24, 65 watt or more?

          • @CyberMurning: "anker dekstop charger 24, 65 watt or more?"

You mean anker USB power adapter?

Doesn't matter how many watts through USB-C output, with USB-A standards the maximum 5V USB-A output of a USB power adapter will be 3A(15watts) to 4A(20watts). And the device will only draw what it needs, so in this case Pebble Plus is rated at 5V/2A it will only draw 5V/2A max(10watts).
e.g. speaker will perform the same whether you plug it into a 20watt USB power adapter or 10watt USB power adapter.

      • Well it’s like placebo effect with a black box XD

        • +1

Maybe put under desk and while sitting tap the sub with your feet it may create better bass

    • +1

In the user manual it says you need to plug the USB-A into 5V/2A USB power adapter and switch it on High gain mode to get full performance.

And you wouldn't call the sub on this a subwoofer. You really should think of it as a small woofer.

Edit: 4 inch downfiring woofer according to Headfi review. https://cdn.head-fi.org/a/10289826.jpg

Same price on CA's eBay store, but with an additional discount for Plus members with PLUSDEC1 coupon, taking the price to $46.55: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/173922086732

    • +1

Nice find. Better deal if you have eBay Plus.

  • I'd say you would plug it into a iPhone charger or some crap and not into a computer's USB port for the power…

    • +1

"I'd say you would plug it into a iPhone charger or some crap and not into a computer's USB port"

Yup. But the Pebble Plus does not include a USB power adapter in the box so I think most consumers just plug it into the computer's USB port thinking that's where it's meant to go.

Also make sure you check the tiny writing on the USB power adapter you want to use, you want to see 5V/2A or higher 5V/2.4A is also common.
Some old iphone/android USB power adapters are only rated at 5V/1A meaning you won't get much better power out of it than a computer's USB3.0 port which has a max output of 5V/0.9A.

      • My Dell monitor has a 15 watt usb output, which would be perfect for a application such as powering the pebble or charging my phone in a reasonable time (1.5 hrs).

        • "My Dell monitor has a 15 watt usb output,"

          That's handy!

I have a question though, does the Dell monitor USB output cut USB power when the monitor goes to sleep (standby)? or does it stay powered?

If it powers off that's handy because it would for example turn these Pebble speakers on/off for you when you use the computer and it would be automatic no need to mess with the Pebble's power switch. If it stays powered it would be handy for powering a Raspberry Pi for example which you need to stay powered on at all times.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Yeah i think that it does switch off with the monitor

            • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: Ok cool thank you.
Makes sense to reduce the overall power consumption rating of the monitor.
The Dell monitor I was looking at had a standby power consumption of 0.3watts which is very good.

I noticed Dell desktop computers also have an impressive standby power consumption usually <0.5watts. I only recently discovered this but most of your typical Desktop computer power supplies that use IEC power plug consume an average of 5watts when the computer is switched off!!
The obvious con of getting a Dell desktop is the Power supply is proprietary, meaning you can only get and replace it with a replacement from Dell.

        • Dell monitors also often have 12V out on them which would be even better for powering a smallish amp. In fact they are designed for Dell soundbars, but standard 5.5mm or whatever DC plug, Just need a male to male plug and will power anything that usually uses a 12V power brick.

          • @rhangman: Hmm yeah I remember seeing the Dell soundbar on their website. Assumed it ran off USB power though not 12v. Interesting.

  • I own this and I love it for what I paid. Just as others have mentioned, DO NOT power it in a PC USB port. It has to be plugged into the wall with a phone adaptor - these days most of us should have one of these lying around though

  • +1

Got a pair of these and can't complain too much for speakers at this price. If anyone didn't want the subwoofer, just the speakers are available for $29 at Centrecom:
    Link

Just to note, there are two later versions of the pebble including the Pebble v3.0 and Pebble Pro.

  • This give me idea to use 2 google minis (currently collecting dust somewhere) in pair instead of wasting $49 for this

    • Yeah I have had a few times where I was considering buying something and after a few hours of not being able to decide I discovered I already have something that can do the same job.

      • the only issue is the google minis uses own charger. and big. if only they can take usbs… do you think we can cut the cable and change to usb ?

        • "do you think we can cut the cable and change to usb ?"

          Don't need to do that.
Just find an unused USB-A to micro-USB cable (I have a few of these) and plug Home mini into a USB power adapter.
On the original Home mini charger you should be able to find very small text which says power output. I am pretty sure Home mini uses very little power so it's charger is probably rated at 5V/1A.
If it is only 1A output, then you can power the Home mini using micro-USB cable with any USB power adapter with over 1A output (most are 2A, 2.4A+).

I have even heard of people using the Home mini as a portable speaker by powering it with a powerbank using the same method.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: huh ? sorry i mean google nest mini https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/google-nest-mini-charcoal…
see it uses proprietary not micro

            • @CyberMurning: Oh ok I have Home Mini which has micro-USB plug.

I mean I don't really see the point of converting them to USB power unless you are going to use it as portable.

Are you worried about power consumption? It will be the same either way. In fact original charger will probably be more efficient.
Just use a double adapter and plug both Nest Mini power adapters.

I don't think cutting the cable and solder the barrel connector wires to USB connector is a good idea if you don't know what you are doing. Soldering points are really tiny on the USB connector I only recommend you do this if you are experienced. If you don't know what you are doing or make a mistake you can also damage the charger or device you plug that modified cable into.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: just too messy under my desk already, have many cables, the extension board also full (or maybe due to the round shape it wont fit if the next plug already occupied)
if usb, i can plug two of them to my desktop desk power charger something like this : https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/belkin-family-rockstar-4-…

ah didnt see ""Just use a double adapter and plug both Nest Mini power adapters" ok will try.

                • @CyberMurning: "ah didnt see ""Just use a double adapter and plug both Nest Mini power adapters" ok will try."

Yeah or just an old 4 socket powerboard. I have a few not being used. Just plug two Nest adapters into one of those if they don't fit side by side.
