nbn FTTP Home Network Help for Slow Internet

Good afternoon all!

I currently have a NBN FTTP connection. We use a NetComm CloudMesh modem/router to send out internet to the house via WiFi/cat ports throughout the house. In my game room, I have a D-Link AC3200 Router which I use to connect all my devices to over its 2.4G and 5G points (TV, Switch, Computer, Phone etc.) as the modem/router is in the garage and has poor signal.

My partner currently complains that the internet is really slow down the other end of the house as there are no close WiFi points. I have a Telstra Smart Modem 3 (model Cobra XH) and was wondering if I could potentially plug that into an ethernet port down her end of the house and use it as just a router/access point?

I've noticed that it also has a Sim slot, I have a few Belong/Boost sims from cashback deals; would this be locked to Telstra or would they maybe work?

Advice would be appreciated, and if I can do something else better let me know. In saying that, not really looking to spend a great deal of money as we've just had Christmas and are trying to save now.

Thanks in advance.

    Frankly the DLink is probably an inferior router to the CobraXH. I would make the Cobra the main router and then use the DLink as an access point only.

    To make the CobraXH an access point only disable DHCP on the CobraXH & plug the DLink into the CobraXH’s LAN port

    • Thank you for the quick reply. Could I have them both connected to the main modem/router? (Just had a look and it is a NetComm CloudMesh Gateway)

      • Usually yes. Just need to disable DHCP on all but the main router & ensure each has its own unique IP address. Then plug the ones with DHCP disabled into the LAN ports

  • I had similar problem last year. I had the exact same model of NetComm router as you do. I used Xiaomi Wifi Repeater 2 but I still found many blind spots in the house. So I bit the bullet and purchased wifi mesh. It cost me over $150 but it did wonders to the strength of the wifi signal. I never had issue with blind spots since the purchase. Hope this helps.

    When you can look into replacing the lot with;

    1. A mesh Wi-Fi system that has wired ethernet backhaul.
    2. Something like a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro + Ubiquiti access points.

    Tried quite a few combinations and happily settled with UDM Pro + a few APs (wired)

  • Hi all,

    Just signed up to Superloop's 'lightspeed' plan of 1000/50. Am still using the set up in OP due to time constraints/moving partner's workstation closer. We are only getting a max of 230mbps (Speedtest) testing with multiple devices using WiFi (not connected) - my phone (Oppo Find X2 Pro directly in front of router) and PC with WiFi 6e card 5m away with a gyprock wall in between. From looking at the specs, I thought these routers would be able to handle at least 500mbps if not the full 1000? Will splurging on a mesh system rectify this?
