KSP is yet another popular title that Epic makes me glad I never bought!

    • +3

      Patient gamers win again!

    • Interesting, looks like a kids type of game (due to its cartoonish look) and yet RRP is higher than the shadow tactics

It is literally about rocket science.

End of another year of great Epic free game giveaways and now back to weekly.

I can't go back now. The shakes are awful.

Kerbal is an excellent game if you like sandboxes and learning about science and engineering. The controls aren't realistic but it can teach you the concepts behind building rockets and orbital mechanics. It's not a casual game and the controls and concepts take time to get the hang of. There are some awesome mods out there to enhance the game. Not all of them get kept up to date though. Some Kerbal players consider using the mods to be cheating or not as fun but I don't subscribe to that view as most real rocketry is automated.

Two awesome mods to check out.
MechJeb 2 is great for automating maneuvers.
Kerbal Engineer Redux is great for helping design your rocket.

The kerbal players that consider mods as cheating do not play with RO (realism overhaul).
Also, have a look at Principia. Tons of fun and extra learning of (more) proper n-body spacefaring, but it mostly works only on the stock planetary system or a few that have been adjusted (turns out is hard for things to not go off rail when you start using a closer approximation to real physics and everything attracts everything).
And ditch MJ for auto ascent! Gravity turns are easy enough once you understand the concept (and the atmosphere you are taking off from).
As for mods, you can find the majority of them on CKAN for easier install and maintenance. Start vanilla though, the sheer number of mods would give you panic attacks if you jump on it without prior research.
      Great game!

The overwhelming number and nature of the mods is the reason I didn't mention CKAN or realism mods. Realism is generally harder but in some ways MechJeb is more realistic than hand flying to orbit, even if some of the functions are easy to fly by hand. Speaking of the realism mods there were a bunch of mods that would change the Kerbin System back into our Solar System which is harder. Kerbal is smaller than Earth and the resulting reduced gravity makes everything significantly easier. It's been a while since I looked at those mods so I don't know if they've been kept alive through updates.

For those following, if you get into it the 2 official addons for Kerbal are pretty good as well and on Steam at least they're often on sale. (They aren't in the Epic store and neither is the main game just yet).

Heaps of tutorials on Youtube. Scott Manley and Matt Lowne are the biggest, but there are lots of good smaller channels.

There's also a healthy community of people making rockets as large as possible to blow up of course. ;-)

Note that Kerbal Space Program 2 is also coming out 24 Feb (or at least that's the current release date).

Yup, RO is often paired with RSS (real solar system) for max fun/pain.
There is enough in the modding community still being supported to easily make this a 1000+ hours free game.
For eventual readers, definitely get it and try it! There isn't much like this game around.
@syousef, enjoy your future space rides!

  • I thought Kerbal was free, maybe a decade ago, did they start charging for it at some point ?

    • Most of the game are free for decades.

Depending on the flag you hoist?

There was a free demo back in the real early days 10+ years ago, it has been paid since with price increases occasionally.

  • Worst thing about this, is that it's in 7 days…

I'll not remember in 7 days!

    But KSP is 10/10!

    • You can set a reminder on the deal start date

      • Yeah, but odds are I'll not check OzB that whole day knowing my luck!

        • +1

Deal is available for 7 days from when it starts.
