Using 17 Gift Cards at JB Hi-Fi?

I recently received 17 $100 gift cards from a rewards company.

However, they aren’t from JB Hi-Fi itself. It’s from ‘The Card Network’ but it has the option to spend it at JB Hi-Fi. I want to buy the iPhone 14 Pro for $1700, so can I use 17 gift cards at once for a payment?

You can use all 17 at once

  • Are these digital (Mastercard) or physical (EFTPOS) TCN gift cards?

    • They are prepaid gift cards. The name is ‘Home gift card’

The reason I am asking whether they are digital or physical TCN HOME gift cards is that the answer to your question will change.

        Digital TCN gift cards

If you want to pay instore, you will need to have all 17 gift cards stored on a mobile wallet in order to use them. The issue is that Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Pay will not let you store 17 Mastercards on a single device, so you will need to use at least two different devices to store the digital TCN gift cards. It would be easier to exchange the digital TCN gift cards for digital JB Hi-Fi gift cards and then use the digital JB Hi-Fi gift cards instore to purchase the iPhone (as long as staff will let you do this, which they should). I'm not entirely sure how you exchange digital TCN gift cards for digital JB Hi-Fi gift cards, but I think you can do it via the TCN website. Have a look in the section towards the end of this comment for advice on how you may be able to do it.

If you want to pay online, you can only redeem 1x digital TCN gift card per online transaction, because JB Hi-Fi's website will not let you split a transaction across multiple debit/credit/prepaid cards. To get around this, you'll need to exchange the digital TCN gift cards for digital JB Hi-Fi gift cards, and the same caveat from the previous paragraph also applies here.

        Physical TCN gift cards

If you want to pay instore, you can do this if the staff member will let you do split payments across multiple cards (which they should be okay doing, considering the OzBargain record is currently 81). Tell the staff member you want to split payments across multiple cards (or EFTPOS cards), tell them the available balance of each TCN gift card, then swipe, select SAV and enter in the PIN on the gift card. Rinse and repeat!

If you want to pay online, you must exchange each TCN gift card for a digital JB Hi-Fi gift card, as you cannot use EFTPOS cards for online transactions. To do this:

        • Go to the webpage for the TCN HOME gift card
        • Scroll down to the How To Use section
        • Choose JB Hi-Fi from the dropdown list
        • Click/tap on the Online button to the right of the dropdown list
        • Click/tap on Proceed
        • Follow the subsequent steps to have the digital gift card emailed to you.

The JB Hi-Fi website does not have a limit on the number of JB Hi-Fi gift cards you can redeem in one online transaction.

They are physical. Thank you so much!

            @Jack Kack: No worries!

One last tip: do not tell the staff member you want to use a gift card as a payment method, otherwise a less-experienced staff member will think you want to use a JB Hi-Fi gift card as a payment method. JB Hi-Fi's checkout system handles TCN gift cards differently to JB Hi-Fi gift cards, so if you accidentally say gift cards and the staff member selects Gift Card on their terminal, the EFTPOS terminal will boot into the wrong mode and will not be able to process the TCN gift cards.

Remember, JB Hi-Fi's checkout system handles TCN gift cards like any other EFTPOS/Visa/Mastercard/AMEX card, which is why you should be clear in saying you want to split payments across cards or EFTPOS cards!

Yes you can or alternatively, you also have the option to use those 17 $100 physical gift cards in-store to purchase one $1700 Jb gift card..

this reminds me of the time i got stuck behind some lady at Myer paying for their purchase with a crapload of gift cards and the cashier had to process them one by one.

Yeah, I’d find that extremely annoying too..

My local Jb has 5 checkout points open at any given time, I had that in mind when I typed out my comment.

You are right but they treat these TCN/Ultimate gift cards as eftpos cards.

        Have you done that yourself?

Yes, just a couple of weeks ago (https://ibb.co/g6ZG1g5)
Bought these cards under the impression that I would be able to use them online to buy something from Jb..

          Huh, fair enough.

    Not without embarrassment.

No reason you can't use them all at once in-store, but I think they have a limit of 5 online (though seems not a problem for you as they aren't JB gift cards anyway)

While waiting for my click and collect at JBs once (that was taking longer than it should) watched the tedious process of someone paying $1000+ in $100 gift cards.

Staff must be used to it, seemed very patient :)

  • I did $500 in $50 denominations took a bit as they won't physically touch them you have to scratch and enter all the pins lol

  • I've bought a $2000 fridge using $100 gift cards, on boxing day with a massive queue behind me before.

Yes both gift card or preloaded debit card should work.
