Fireworks More and More Boring Each Year?

Happy New Year all!

Was watching the 9pm fireworks (live) last night and just couldn't help but think that they were sorta boring.

Felt a sense of déjà vu as the years seem to go by so fast marked by fireworks each NYE. Found it so boring that didn't bother to turn on the tele for the 12am fireworks.

Does anyone else feel the same or is this feeling just a sign of ageing? Are there better ways to spend tax payers money (noting that the fireworks are a big drawcard for tourism etc)?

It works only if the target population isn’t coddled into a “someone else will fix it attitude” like we do here. For christs sake, people don’t know what to do when an emergency vehicle comes up behind them, and that’s if they even notice it in the first place!!!!

    • Love Budapest, great city!

      • It's actually 2 cities

reminds me of our first night in Mumbai - tired from the flight, we got cheap hostel beds which were hard and very uncomfortable so we tossed and turned

but the added thrill was it was Ganeshturti - the Elephant God festival - and young people were letting off cherry bombs - about 2" globes of gunpowder - in the street right outside the window (shuttered - not glass) so it was right in our ears - at 1am - to cheers from the assembled rabble - for some hours

a night to remember - the worst memories make the best stories, etc.

No government fireworks, but locals can buy fireworks for 48 hours - it is bedlam, but fantastic. The crowd was crushed in a central square, fireworks impressively blasting every minute then a crescendo at midnight.

sounds like you had a great nye.

It actually opened my eyes to the way things can work in a libertarian model

      😁.

If you want a better experience, Japan does fireworks quite well, some lasting 3 hours (with minor ad breaks)

    • That's for summer events not for NY

  • Wait! What? It’s a new year?
    Gosh!

Fireworks are boring. Drone shows are much more impressive. Problem is anything more than a light wind cancels the show.

I prefer smaller fireworks events. When I was growing up I loved our town's fireworks displays with a few thousand people in attendance. I think it would have exploded (crappy pun intended) now as the area's gotten too big, so it wouldn't be as good. It wasn't too crowded back in the day and they had a little festival to go with it and you'd always run into people you know.

I went to another one recently with about 100 people and again there was a little festival and pretty much everyone knew everyone. Even better!

For me, it's not about how big or unique the show is, it's the atmosphere. Proximity can also be a factor. It's way more interesting to be up close and watching the person light the fireworks and the anticipation of what's coming, plus the sound is way better! The kids all gathering at the front and getting excited about it.

A longer fireworks show isn't necessarily better either, the shorter length of these little fireworks shows can actually be a good thing. The fireworks may not be as fancy, but I think the experience is better.

Fireworks look good when there is no trapped and lingering smoke. This year seemed to have quite a bit of trapped smoke making the fireworks less vibrant than they could have been (meaning I still enjoy watching). I was told it could be due to "cheaper" fireworks however a quick Google search comes back with something about inversion layers which happens when a pocket of warmer air is over top of a pocket of cooler air… inversion layer may also flip drones haha, who knows

I took the kids to the local 9pm fireworks and while they looked good, we were continually being covered in the debris.

Bits of cardboard kept floating down along with grit which got in everyone's eyes.

They had the fireworks out on the water, just like normal. I've never in my life experienced debris falling on the crowd. I'm wondering if they went cheap or something and that's what caused it.

  • I can't even tell you how I feel about Brisbane's firework show, because ABC Brisbane just ran a rerun of Sydney's from an hour before.

    • That's what 10 years of LNP cuts will do. There's far less local content on ABC now than before the Libs came to power.

Fireworks in the city are same-old, same-old boring. But, I enjoy watching illegal fireworks in the suburbs, far away from crowded areas. I think the locals try to compete against each other. So, it is usually beautiful chaos. This year was quiet though.

    I've thought this for years.

To be fair, there's only so much that can be done with exploding balls of light. Every year we see the same types.

I think it would be more exciting if you were there, because the sounds of the fireworks are much more impactful than watching on the TV.

This is why they continue to happen. Just look at the crowds that pour into Sydney to watch them. Sure, a good percentage of those might still go if there were no fireworks, but it is still a huge attraction.

    Especially for the kids.

Yeah I was there live and still felt like yawning while others around were oo-ing and ah-ing….Even the missus was like…when is this going to end…

agreed - the Fotis franchise seems to be tiring - same ol', same ol' - 5 similar bursts in a long along Sydney Harbour - big finish, weeping bridge - yay, there's your international pic - didn't make the Daily Mail front selection this year - boring.

we took a family to get as close as we could in the Rocks - left it a bit too late and were fenced out by 840pm

after 5 minutes the 15yo boy beside me asked me 'when does it finish?' - guess he was bored already - total 8 minutes for the 9pm - meh - turn and walk away - what fun :-(

yeah I'd suggest seeking some alternate creativity - that would be some pushback against the entrenched Fotis deal - who would almost certainly say 'we're the only ones who can do it'

e.g. in Melbourne last century I remember lying on the grass in Albert Park while Japanese-style fireworks were described as different flowers and they were really quite wonderful - other sites like Rio do beach-length displays - something on top of Sydney CBD buildings one year was also pretty good

    time for something different methinks

(OP did not say which site - so could be woop-woop for all I know)

Lol, despite all the promotion, Sydney's NYE fireworks are quite mediocre.
And yes, it's quite annoying to hear every time 'this year fireworks will be 10 times bigger and better' and still same old design and no new tech.

If you think 'Wait, what new can be done here' I'd recommend to check what they do in Japan or in United states - the size and complexity of the shells are amazing. Not even mentioning lasers & drones.

  • I felt the same, I recall in previous years that fireworks used to run for a while and were quite spectacular with an amazing finale.
However now (in WA at least) the main event only ran for a few minutes and was quite underwhelming.. the same way my wife describes me so at least I know how she feels thanks to the sky show.

I think fireworks are becoming archaic and stale. They were exciting and new 100 years ago when there wasn't much else to gawk at in awe.

I much prefer drone light shows now. The technology, engineering and programming skills required for that is astounding. I think/hope this will be the future of night sky entertainment.

Fireworks really aren't that exciting when you get older, full stop.
    Zzzzzzz.

  • You're watching fireworks on TV….

Compared to the various fireworks festivals in Japan; the fireworks here including the Sydney New Year's Eve midnight fireworks lack creativity and more intricate techniques, they're mostly just 'diarrhoea' of explosions by comparison.

This years 9pm fireworks really did feel like it was done without much innovation or excitement.
    They felt bland.

  • I miss the 9.30pm and was looking forward for the 12 but fallen asleep in the end. That how I enjoyed 2022 NYE :)

    • You missed the 9pm and waited for the 9:30pm ?

  • No, your just getting older.

  • Time to watch fireworks in Meta !

    • Lord of the Rings Online has some nice fireworks. Even Roblox has better fireworks than Meta.

Well, I used to enjoy fireworks as a kid in the uk, we could buy our own and set them off in the garden. Unfortunately, people now let off fireworks in the UK from bonfire night on 5th November to the following bonfire night as every culture celebrates every event with fireworks, then you have the antisocial just doing it to annoy people ..so pretty much all year..which gets pretty annoying when you have to go to work and fireworks are going off at 3am.
Given people have no sense and no responsibility nor repercussions these days, I'm kind of glad they are banned in Australia, although people still manage to get them, at least it's not an all year thing.
The official displays are good to go to sometimes

No enjoyment from fireworks is a sign of Grandfather syndrome. Unfortunately, it's hereditary and there's no cure.

  • They needed drones, singapore had a crazy NYE countdown

  • Fireworks are awesome. I went to a council one and it was still cool!

I loved watching Rugrats as a kid.

  • You're asking about the broader experience of fireworks in life, but even each viewing goes through stages https://youtu.be/QjA5BvtdiK0

remember, just because you feel miserable doesn't mean everyone else around you feels the same

  • Whats up with more and more residential fireworks these days. There were house parties in my neighbourhood that had about 10 minutes of fireworks at 9pm and about 20 minutes of fireworks at 12… And the one at 12 was out of control, a lot of the fireworks seemed to be going all over the place. One even felt like it hit my house or came damn close as (I am not exaggerating) my house shook or vibrated might be the more accurate work. I thought some major power transformer had gone down or something. I have tried to look for any damage, none so far so i hope its all good but Its hard to see some parts of my roof.

  • Found it so boring that didn't bother to turn on the tele for the 12am fireworks.

Fireworks are only good when it's live and in person!

  • Don't know never seen any.

  • Because there are more illegal fireworks in the hands of people so regulations get tighter.

  • I think the big risk over here is Bushfires, especially as New Years basically falls during Summer when its hot, so i can understand that, i used to live in the UK and bought Fireworks as a kid, had fun but yeah i can understand how people can get seriously hurt by them, plus in the UK as they are available pretty much all year round you get alot going off during Guy Fawkes Night on November 5th, and not just on the 5th, people start letting them off a week or so in advance and i can be pretty annoying.

  • It is ultimately hard to re-invent the fireworks. All you can do is add more. It kind of gets all silly like a MCU/Transformer CGI Orgy.

    Sometimes less is more.

  • Im hoping drones take over,
City of Perth seem to be pushing ahead with drone shows more regularly and the few ive been too I really liked
Its seems much more sustainable than fireworks and they wont be just a once a year occasion

I found the 9PM v 12AM won have such a big difference that it's not even fair to consider 9PM as a show but just as a sampler

  • The 9pm ones don't hold a candle next to the midnight ones :) They will never be as long, or use as many tonnes as the 'big' one, so there's no comparison.
