  • Any comments on Scoot into Europe? Long way if it's not a great service…

    • +4

It's not 'great' service, it's a low cost carrier. But you do get 10kg carry-on, and you're on a Dreamliner, so that's nice.

    • +2

Good aircraft, seats are smaller in pitch and width than standard, normally long transits (Changi is a good place to be) and but you need to buy everything onboard. Pretty much long-haul Jetstar

      • If it uses the same config as jetstar you want a seat in the economy section before the first door. There's 1 or 2 less rows thus way more clearance betwnn knee and back of seat in front.

        • +2

They have different layouts and scoot operates the 787-8 (3 layouts) & 787-9 (single layout), whereas Jetstar stuck with the smaller 787-8 (single layout).

It's highly likely the larger 787-9 will be used from SYD/MELB-SIN (or 788 from other AU airports) and the 787-8 for the SIN to ATH leg. 787-9's (18" width) have the better seats compared to scoots 787-8's (18.9-20" width). JetStar's 787-8's are the worst with (17" width). I've put the link below for anyone booking as this might be a good guide, but it is what it is and any decent seats with 31"+ pitch are a premium.

  • 2023?

  • +1

Looks like someone's still living in the past 😋

  • FYI 20kg luggage return is ~$250

    • Yup. Food and drink also aren't cheap. This is a full budget airline

    • Yikes…

    • +1

Flown only with 10kg carry-on with LCC to UK in past. Was there travelling for 10 weeks plus 3 weeks of stop overs.
Much easier travelling light, if you can do it

  • The cheap flights have a 30 hour commute time, which is horrible.

    • Gold Coast cheap flights are even longer - as go via MEL!

  • +1

Am wary of booking that far ahead. Travel requirements & conditions can quickly change. Had all flights in last 3 years cancelled.

Got caught with booking with Air Asia for 2020. Still can't use almost useless voucher. Maybe next year…

    • Take out travel insurance.

      • Many flying very cheaply don't bother with the extra cost of travel insurance. I never have in decades of overseas travel. Never needed it.

I usually just change my travel plans accordingly. When the Icelandic volcano erupted in 2010, I couldn't easily Tra vel on from the UK. So had 10 weeks there instead of further into Europe.

I travel very cheap! Had only paid the $650 return to UK from Oz. Travel insurance on a 3 month trip isn't cheap & wouldn't have helped. I was backpacking overseas then up to 9 months a year.

Cancelled trips: All airlines offered voucher or refunds. Accommodation was cancelled at no cost. There were no other financial loses - to claim. Just a lot of bother & absolutely no fun.

Like many vouchers, my only voucher (AirAsia) has complex conditions & is worth a fraction of the much dearer travel price now. Will see in '23 as AA resumes flights from Gold Coast.

It's the planning for & anticipation of trips that are later cancelled, that is the greatest issue. No compensation for that. So am wary of such a commitment at the moment.

        • Do you have the funds to cover your helicopter ride and insane medical bills if you’re involved in a serious MVA in the US? What about a flight with you on a stretcher? Seems odd unless you have a lot of money to cover yourself in that scenario.

I think medical is the only reason I get travel insurance.

          • @prkr: Insurance is probability, an area I topped at Uni. So am well aware.
Have funds to cover most situations. But it's never happened.

Don't have any insurance on anything, beyond what is mandated (car CTP). It's a considered decision, saving me thousands a year.

Health care is expensive. Never travelled in USA. Not on my list. Before my many trips, research what countries have reciprocal health care & how to get there fast. Or return home.

Only paid to return home early once - after 2011 tsunami in Japan, but could have stayed or travelled to another country.

In decades of overseas travel I've only had 1 medical issue requiring urgent medical treatment - in NZ after a farm motorbike accident. Treated free.

In my long experience, travel insurance would have been a complete waste of money. I could not make any valid claims.

            • +1

@INFIDEL: Just because it’s never happened doesn’t mean it won’t. The odds are low but if you get seriously injured in the wrong country, you’d be screwed.

Insurance companies obviously profit from most people not needing it, but it’s a big gamble and small price to pay to know you’ll be looked after should the worst happen.

              • @prkr: Travelling overseas up to 9 months a year through various countries, its not such a small cost.

I grew up in a family who had their own insurance broker - I learnt from him. I understand the risks & the costs. For me it makes no economic sense.

                • @INFIDEL: I travel about the same and have annual travel insurance. It’s really not that much. But each to their own. I hope you never have to eat your words, and if you do, please don’t be one of those that makes a GoFundMe and expects everyone else to make up for their decisions.

                  • @prkr: You just seem like an insurance sales pitch!
Don't try to guilt me for your imagined GoFundMe request you think I'd make…

As I replied above - I have the funds. I never ask for money. Rather, I give money away to those in need, have fully funded community programs & spend some of my travel time volunteering abroad.

It's not that I can't afford insurance… I have other priorities for my funds.
My path may not be the usual one, but it is enriching. I make rational considered decisions.

Given how long & cheap I prefer to travel, I consider it an unnecessary expense for me.

This is a budget $300+ flight Deal!
I was considering it as a starting point for another long budget trip into Europe - with no end date!

The lower the costs, the longer I travel. (I never work when travelling. I've hitchhiked, slept in parks & beaches in Japan. Had amazing low cost adventures - that money can't buy!!) Very different to corporate or business travel😉

I've done rescues on my travels. One involved requesting a helicopter medivac off a mountain. I understand the risks & costs more than most.

I have used Scoot "Gold Coast to Athene" in September 2022 return. It cost me $1200 including 20kg baggage each way and 4x meal during each flight (with stopover in Singapore).
Foods were less than average quality, airline didn't strict with 10kg limits for cabin baggage.
Planes were OK, slightly better than public buses in Gold Coast. No TV, you have to pay for usb charger and drink /or meal expensive if you order in plane. If you don't pay for your seat you may end up seat at the back near the kitchen & toilet.
    Yes, toilette were free.
There are long waiting at Singapore for 9 hours, and 16 hours.
Yes, you can have food at airport or take a tour in Singapore.
In summary; it is a budget airline if you spot a really cheap seats, only suitable for people to save $500 or more for 36 or 48 hours trip instead of 22 hours.

  • How much to get back?

  • Scoot hahaha keep dreaming, i rather pay more money and have a good trip then a cheap one that may cost me more later.
