I was looking for a single smart speaker (for the bedroom) compatible with Bluetooth and Airplay. This is probably the best sounding/value for money in its price range.

Closest cheap options (I think) are:
- Ikea SYMFONISK WiFi bookshelf speaker, black smart/gen 2 $199

- Sonos One Gen 2 Wireless Speaker $265

N.B. There is no microphone so you can't speak to it like an Echo Dot, but nor can it eavesdrop on you.

  • The nice thing about Sonos’ new voice control is it’s only for music and doesn’t leave the device. Ie it’s processed locally

  • Interesting that it also has multi-room audio. Could be a great deal.

  • How can it be a smart speaker if it doesn’t have a microphone for a voice assistant?

    • Means as long as it's connected to wifi you can get Alexa to play off it. Doesn't mean it can activate any commands though

  • This is a linkplay based speaker

Unless it has drastically improved in the past few years…..avoid.

When I had a linkplay system, it was buggy as hell and the interface was far from seamless and not as slick as Sonos.

I'd go the Symfonisk. I'm running them throughout my house for years and is great value

  • You could also wait for the new Apple HomePod 2nd gen. to be released (perhaps in March '23), but that will come with an Apple tax.
