Hello,

Just got a SMS followed by an email from Zoom broadband, they had some hardware issue and are refunding Jan to all services and disconnecting them?

Probably it's a good thing that they are no longer in business. If they were reselling NBN with a single out of warranty router with no redundancy or at least 2 hr support response from the vendor then this was destined to happen sooner than later.

    • Hardly anyone knows of them so no loss really

  • +5

Lol and they've only been around for less than a year yet using out of warranty hardware…

And that address is literally just offices for rent, doesn't look very permanent

  • Surprise surprise šŸ˜‚
What an absolute joke of a company

    • Zoom on the nbn?

More like Slack on the nbn

  • +5

Looks like they don't have 50k to their name, ouch!

We will be refunding January service to customers in full. I do apologise we couldnā€™t provide services to you for a longer period of time, we just cannot afford to purchase the new core router right now (they are around $50,000) hence we have been left with no other option.

    • +1

There is a fair lead time for new carrier betwork equipment so that wouldnt help either.

    • +5

Nor can they find anyone willing to loan/capitalise them $50K.

      Must be a shit business.

    • +10

They tried, they failed. And at least they seem to be honest looking at their comm. I can just think of Optus/Medibank about their comm just to flat it out.

      Not our problem, right though.

    • Here is one for less than half that cost. Best of all, it has 1 year warranty. Service should be up for at least 366 days. lol!

      https://www.ebay.com/itm/304684774268?hash=item46f0a0b37c:g:ā€¦

      • Can you buy it and donate it to us, you can have some zoom shares.

        • Why would I want shares in a company that just lost all of its customers because they were using refurbished out of warranty devices without any redundancy?

Somehow, I don't think you will be getting many customers once you rebuild your network.

          • @MrPants: Sorry fully subscribed now, no shares available. You missed your chance šŸ˜Š

            Shane.

            • @[Deactivated]: Did someone find $2 under the couch and buy all of the shares?

              • @MrPants: Exactly, 100% of our book. Howā€™d you know? Hope thereā€™s no insider trading going on here.

  • +4

only 50k and they dont have enough cash to pay for it. I dont know how they run the business.

  • +2

Single point of failure and no spares…

Insert Austin Powers "I too like to live dangerously" meme

    • On the edge like a razor blade.

  • +2

I said it was a scam, in a few months a new Jake Berry ISP will launch and claim to know nothing about Zoom or will blame it on Zooms wholesaler (Field Services Group)

    • Who wants to start making bets on the new name?

Maybe we can give them some ideas :D

      • +3

Who wants to start making bets on the new name?

        Rooted Router Broadband

    • How does he make money out of it if he has to keep refunding people? What's the end game?

      • +1

Probably because 90% of people wont chase refunds and will just move on to the next cheapest.

        • I see, interesting scam, doesn't seem like it would work out with equipment and setup costs though, but must be money in it or he wouldn't do it.

          • +1

@brendanm: I am pretty sure he just reuses the same equipment on each of his scams

          • @brendanm: No money in it, they pretty much admitted that straight up they were spending more money then what was coming in, with 600 customer at $3 each as most would of gone for the discounted deals not a lot of wiggle room.
That is only $1800 profit on a business they were loosing $100000 a month on or something like that.
Hence why I said you need a few million just for equipment not to mention marketing.

            • +2

@Chaddy: Yes, I understand that, hence the question. The guy that owns zoom has apparently don't this before, my thoughts echo yours, that after setup costs, and paying NBN, staff etc, it is a losing proposition. Not having any backup equipment is simply laughable.

              • -8

@brendanm: Once again not a scam, weā€™re just not going to replace the equipment because itā€™s not worth investing any money into. Look at how you guys treat us publicly?

Sure, we lost. Itā€™s shit. But itā€™s better than dealing with this nonsense.

Thereā€™s better and more profitable businessā€™s out there that donā€™t involve this abuse.

                Shane.

                • +7

@[Deactivated]: Probably because there is more than enough evidence to have tied you guys to Epic and Infinity. Stop scamming people Shane & Jake

                    • @[Deactivated]: Oh that is very mature, resorting to name calling. And you call yourself a genuine business

                      • -7

@DalekZ: Says the no named keyboard warrior spreading rumours on a public forumā€¦

@[Deactivated]: Says the no named keyboard warrior who has and has provided evidence to back up his statements regarding you and zoom shane multiple times

                          • -6

@DalekZ: That makes no sense what you have just said.

We have refunded all of our customers, please explain to me on plain English like Iā€™m a stupid little child how on earth itā€™s a scam when nobody has lost a cent?

Please, please help me understand sir.

                            • +3

@[Deactivated]: I never said Zoom was a scam, I said that Zoom's owner Jake Berry (and don't try and deny it given his name and email is in your website API) is a scammer. If you need me to explain that like a child then you have zero business running a company

                • +4

                  @[Deactivated]:

Look at how you guys treat us publicly? … But itā€™s better than dealing with this nonsense.

Yeah people usually aren't happy with lies and incompetency.

Thereā€™s better and more profitable businessā€™s out there that donā€™t involve this abuse.

The outcome of Zoom literally couldn't be any more predictable lol

                  • @jvsnumberonefan: I love how Jayden has just jumped straight back into the troll stream when the op presents.

                • +1

@[Deactivated]: Mate, you are a nusciance. You obviously have no business savy. Don't pat yourself on the back for doing the bare minimum and refunding customers for a product you never delivered in the first place. You're no hero.

You don't understand how much you have inconvenienced your customers, and your disdain for them is not a good look. You can't just keep trying new business ventures in the hope of finding the one that works - all at the expensive of mucking people around. You are wasting everyone's time and look like a fool in the process.

Your core approach is garbage. You have no long term plan. You have failed to budget or provide any redundancy equipment. You are no entrepreneur, just get back on seek and do tech support or some engineer role.

                  • @GrimCheaper: Ahh another one. I guess you canā€™t read between the lines.

                    Shane.

        • Bingo !

      • -2

There was no money made on this business I can guarantee you that mate. One seriously big loss.

where did you say it was a scam? i could only find this comment. do you have an alt?

      • Nobody has been scammed, weā€™ve already refunded all of the customers in full for Jan, thatā€™s 3 days they actually got from us FOR FREEā€¦ā€¦.

        • Can you refund me for your rug pull on epic broadband?

          • @Brick50: We have nothing to do with Epic Broadband. Suggest contacting your bank.

            Shane

    • Thereā€™s no scam, all of the customers have been refunded in full at a loss to the business.

  • +3

Just even more lies and deception, BS excuse and they ain't coming back. How predictable.

Given the 'hardware' they are using, that's just complete bull.

    • +1

to be fare they did get one thing correct, that i'm an expert.
Also they did say either the network is on or off and that it was basic, which frankly set off alarm bells in my head, like seriously who the hell defends their network by telling everyone its shit just get over it. That was the general attitude.
I wasn't joking when I said you need at least $20 million.
Well either that or a good niche.
The likes of Ozot is a good example of this or Future BB would be another one.
Though Future probably have a few million now as they were purchased in the last year or so.

      • 20 mill is a bit insane Chad.

You can get away with 4 POPā€™s at $50k a POP followed by $10k a month each POP to maintain.

Marketing is a killer, it just depends how much you want to pour into it and what the CPA intention is.

A million bucks alone would bring in around 12k new customers.

Iā€™ve told you before we know a hell of a lot more about this business than you do.

        Shane.

        • +5

You're both absolute clowns and it's (profanity) hillarious.

        • +5

" Iā€™ve told you before we know a hell of a lot more about this business "

Goodo, do you plan to use such knowledge next time?

      • No Chaddy.

        No.

    • +3

Their dlink router from the skip out back finally packed it in and Harvey Norman extended warranty was void :)

      • -1

Actually a MX204 from a third party vendor that restores and resells, wonā€™t warrant this router due to it being an ā€œas isā€ sale.

        • +4

And you didn't think to get a backup router just incase ?

    • Jaydenā€™s back!

  • +2

At least they won't be trading while insolvent so there's a plus.

What name will Berry come up with for his next RSP?

    • +5

      Berry Nice Broadband

      • +5

Wouldn't put it past you at this point lmao

        • For sure Jayden. You can be the first customer.

  • +1

    What a shit show

    • -2

Did you get your popcorn ready?

      • Why are you even investing more time here? Shouldnā€™t you be looking for a job or something?

        • I know. All his latest comments were middle of the night after the announcement. Might have got on the drink and wrote these.

          • @Whatisthatvelvet: Spot on mate. On the beers and into the forums.

            • @[Deactivated]: Haha. Do the same sometimes. Or I normally get random shit delivered from Amazon a couple days later that I forgot about.

              • @Whatisthatvelvet: Or Wish!

                Shane.

  • +3

    Epic screwup

    • -1

      Hmmm

  • Unsure why people are so furious when they are getting refunds and probably can keep modem? šŸ¤·

    • i'd question if EVERYBODY got their FULL refunds.
If it's anything like the EPIC scandall, what the business defines as a refund is very different to what the consumer or ACCC defines as a refund.

    • Again, everyone got their refunds. No need for conjecture.

  • I'm annoyed cos now I have to go through the hassle of finding a new ISP, and left with no internet for the house until it's sorted. (no google Assistant, no access to Ring services). I've chosen to go with Tangerine on the $79.90 deal for 250/25. (signed up last night as soon as the disconnection occurred). But I'm concerned cos they specifically tell you to not disconnect from existing provider or it will cause significant delays, but it seems all existing customers of Zoom have already been disconnected! Have to wait and see in a couple hours when I can talk to Tangerine.

    • +1

Same here, went back to Tangerine and trying to get the discounted price for 100/25

      • just got order confirmation from Tangerine, praying for no activation issues.

        • +1

*Update - Tangerine up and ready to go, just need to configure router when I get home tonight! :)

    • -1

Sorry that we caused you any frustrations mate. It had to happen quickly unfortunately due to the circumstances.

      Shane,

  • +1

You'll be fine, the not disconnecting warning is more for Voice over IP aka Phone services. If you don't have a phone service configured you'll be fine. If you do then your number might be lost.
Though I don't think they pushed too hard on selling phone services.
Though they could of sold the customer base so they didn't loose connection.

  • +5

Zoom broadband does live up to it's name tho, Quickest ISP to go bust lol

    • -1

      We didnā€™t go bust.

      Shane.

  • -4

Glad I do not have an ISP with this market in residential, because there is absolutely no money in it what so ever and to put up with this kind of abuse, not suprised at all Zoom packed up shop and called it a hardware failure.
    I would too.

    • lol

Any reason you've only chosen to participate in ZB posts?

Of all the deals to vote for and comment on, and forum posts, you only stick to defending this company…

      • They also appeared to try and doxx one of the other ozbargainers (since deleted).

    • Hi Shane

      • Hi Postal Dude.

    • Commbank and several other large ISPs with a few thousand customers would disagree with you on that. Plenty of money to be made if you know what your doing and have a few billion to throw at it.
But the smaller ISPs can't compete with that.
Which I believe is basically what I said only a few weeks ago and was attacked for saying so by yourself and a few Zoom BB staffers. I wasn't joking.

      • Maybe not a billion, but a couple of million for marketing sure.

        Shane.

  • -2

I don't get the amount of hate and the need to crap on zoom broadband, okay the guys tried to run a business, it didn't go well and they closed it.
I hope they learn from this and move on, starting a business requires more than technical knowledge, competitive pricing, and aggressive campaign. There need to be risk analysis and that is where small businesses fail because of the incomplete business case.
I signed up with zoombroadband and I enjoyed it while it lasted, now I'm back to paying more and thats no different to what I was before moving to zoom, the refund didn't hit my bank account yet and I hope it does.
Good on you zoom broadband for trying, not many people get from behind their desks and start something.
We are no longer in an age where we have to go and line up at a brick and mortar shop to get connected, my connection was restored with a different ISP in a matter of minutes.
I get the frustration some are showing, however I cannot see a comparative level of frustration to when Telstra or Optus does something wrong or bad that they could have easily avoided.

    • To make a long story short the amount of regulation and paperwork to run an ISP in this country is in sane, although justified as Internet is now classed as important as water or power and considered an essential service, so its not just a matter of buying a bit of cheap Colocation in a Datacentre somewhere and connecting up a couple of routers to the internet with a few IPs you need legal expertise and the money to pay the fines from the TIO when someone complains or the money to fix broken equipment that the ISP is legally required to fix.

    • -3

Why do these posts get downvoted, itā€™s precisely explains how we feel aswell.

      I guess misery loves company.

      Shane.

    • -1

I couldn't agree more with this comment. The only thing I'm unhappy about is not being able to sign back up. Oh well, I went back to Launtel for about 2 minutes of downtime on the switch over……boo hoo…. I got a refund already I'm happy.

  • First I came across Zoom was on the Ausnog Mailing list - I wonder if there's much of an overlap between the OzB and Ausnog membership

    https://lists.ausnog.net/pipermail/ausnog/2022-December/0461ā€¦

I've been on the end of one shutdown RSP and wasn't too hard to quickly get up and running with a provider who has an automated process

    • People will always fear what they have no control over.
