Light 13” laptop comparable to Mac Air

I want a small and light laptop (13") to run windows 8 ($14.99 upgrade) about the only comparable thing I can find is Samsung Series 9 but it is expensive

Unless it is a super awesome deal this is what I am after as a minimum:
13”
4GB Memory
256GB SSD
No optical drive
less than $1700
less than 1.5kg

Any suggestions are welcome or am I just better off get an apple and running bootcamp?

  • why you need to compare with a MacAir?
If you already set your mind, go for it.

  • Have a look into the Sony Vaio Z. Good price off eBay USA sellers. I've got one and wouldn't consider anything else.

  • Where were you when harvey norman had the samsung 900x3c for $988? Or when JB Hifi had it for $1200?
But if you don't want to wait for a deal, you might as well spend a bit more and get a UX31A.

  • The main problem getting a mac air is then I need to buy windows separately

When was the samsung 900x3c $988? that would have been perfect

I can wait a bit but my current computer is very close to death

  • Saw 900x3c on special in some JB can be as low as $1200. You can probably try to haggle a bit.

  • Got a folio13 from a week back, untouched for a week, yours for 600 :)

    128gb ssd though

mind you, this is the minimum you can spend and have a more than decent product, spend the $900+ elsewhere, or save it

  • I have a new MacBook air 13inch ex demo display never been used with full packaging specs and still some warranty….pm me…. Happy to sell way below your price… And you can still buy windows and come out on top!!!

  • UX31A/UX32VD from bhphotovideo?

    (1299 + 86.86 ~shipping via UPS) x 1.10 (for GST) + $60 for customs fee = $1584.46 delivered
I guess you can either change the 500GB RPM drive as soon as prices come down again (256GB.. maybe $200 soon) and upgrade the RAM (one of them is soldered, one of them is not) on this machine.
1.45 kg I think it was.

The UX31As (Zenbook prime) seems to be still a bit expensive unfortunately :\

    • Hey,

Does UPS charge its own customs rate? I take it $60 is because >$1000
I've been eyeing the 11.6" MBA on their site just shy of a grand. Came close to buying a netbook from these guys some years back. Wanna take it on a trip with me so size is perfect. Thx

      • No, I haven't broken the threshold yet but Australia Customs will inform you to pay up if necessary, UPS will not charge their own customs rate.
At the moment with the base UX31A at $1029 and the exchange rate being almost 1.05, it will be under the $1000 threshold and GST will not be payable :)

        • Apparently there is a courier fee according to someone on whirlpool, it costs $10 though so its not significant compared to the savings you are obtaining through purchasing overseas.

  • So i think i have narrowed it down to one of these:

    Samsung Series 9
    Dell XPS 13
    Mac Air 13

    what does everyone think?

    • They're all similar, just get whichever one is on sale.

      • Depends which one is more "hackintoshable"….:)
