Before anyone considers this, i'm still dealing with harvey norman over two acer nitro 5's that overheated and cooked themselves.

HN have been painful to deal with but so have acer where they have after a lot of effort admitted they're suffering issues with the entire nitro 5 lineup with overheating being a huge issue that they have "no solution" for.

You will get lots of people going hey mine is perfect it works fine…. then after warranty is done instead of battling to have your warranty fulfilled you are SOL.

Acer's nitro 5's are to be avoided.

    • I agree. New laptops are shipping next month so might as well wait for something decent.

    • The cooling on them is definitely less than ideal

Honestly, as soon as acer admitted it was a known issue after burrying it, it should have been an instant recall the line situation.

It explains why they've had these models frequently on special at this price point on and off for 14 months, they want to clear house and worry about it later.

Part of the issue has been they don't want to refund me, they want me to send it in and give me another model.

Asked what would happen if I get another model and got the same issue, oh yeah it won't happen…. despite the fact you've admitted the whole series has issues and you arent sure of a fix.

What will you do with these two? oh we'd refurbish them…

This is what you are dealing with from acer….

This is why I just waited until there was a decent deal from Dell, got a gaming laptop direct from them with ProSupport Add-On. Now if there's a part that fails they will come out to my house within like 2 business days and replace parts. Only cost like $250 for 3 years of that cover and is 100% worth it for something like a gaming laptop that's bound to have issues.

    • i also had issues with acer online support and harvey norman i sent the laptop there to be repaired and they sent it back to me still broken with bsod. I sent it back and they were going to send it back to me but i mentioned accc and they found a moutherboard error and replaced it. it taken them all of 2+ months to fix it. my new laptop is now working fine acer nitro an515-57. as for overheating i run coolboost setting on the nitrosense app and have a cooling pad underneath and no issues yet.

      • my favourite comment so far from them was that if I go into settings and crank the fans right up so it sounds like a jet engine….. then it MIGHT not overheat.

So you want me running a laptop for work and games, that sounds like a jet engine running excel so it MIGHT not overheat….

Literal definition of not fit for purpose.

Wait for the upcoming 4060 line of budget laptops.

    • -1

4060 is going to be a lot more expensive than 3060.

It won't be. Watch out for the next gen Dell G15s and Nitros. Under $1500.

I paid like 1050 for this model new, $999 refurb doesn't seem worth it

    • Exactly what I thought. Especially when you can get others new with 16gb ram and a newer processor

    • Same here. Pretty sure we all got it from that same deal at HN a while ago. $999 is barely a discount considering this laptop has the tendency to overheat quite quickly.

Please avoid this. I had the one with i7 last December (2021). These are power throttled and thermally not very good. Main issue is the PSU being only 180w causing graphics to loose power and auto switch to Intel integrated graphics mid game.

    • I5 would be less drain on the power and cooling
      But yes i wouldnt buy

Ok so fair dinkum speaking, this laptop is not too bad for med-light gaming but the thermal is very absymal if not straight up bad. I put it on a cooling pad all the time and it still runs around 45-50 degrees on idle and ram up to 79 degrees with heavier usage. Also it has a very disgustingly pair of shit speakers so bluetooth speakers is a must. Most people here probably got it for $1,098 or less from Harvey Norman anyway so a $100 less for a refurbish unit is not a very good discount at all. At $900 it might be worth it but remember you are getting what you paid for. Also it doesn't have Thunderbolt 4 or DP port via USB C which can be dealbreaker for some. To me it has been working alright 4 months in but I didn't game on it extensively (mostly game on my Steam Deck and other consoles tbh) and mostly uses it for very light office works. Even put in a 2*16GB because why the hell not. It did breeze through everything but as I've stated there are some downsides mentioned above.

Will it play modern games on High-Med setting at 1080p? Definitely. Is the thermal and battery good? Absolutely not. It is worth $999 refurbished? I'll let you be the judge of that.

  • God damn it, the deal I want is also the deal I don't want cause it's a nitro.

  • If i re-applied thermal paste and upgraded the ram, would this void my warranty with JW computers or Acer?
