Similar deal for VIC this year by the looks of it.

“All new domestic students enrolling in a professional-entry nursing or midwifery course in 2023 and 2024 will receive a scholarship of up to $16,500 to cover course costs.

Students will receive $9,000 while they study and the remaining $7,500 if they work in Victorian public health services for two years.“

    https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/making-it-free-study-nursing-…

    • +8

      That's not similar at all.

      • +1

Agreed. Re Victoria that's just two courses. The title of this 'deal' should make it clear that it is exclusively available to residents of Queensland.

        • +3

Not only that, but even the two courses that Victoria offers are conditioned on working "in Victorian public health services for two years".

        • The free nursing courses is a special initiative by the government to try and solve the nursing crisis, but personally I cannot see that it will achieve much. Given the way nurses are paid and treated, who'd want to sign up.

However, it has nothing to do with the free TAFE courses. You can see the full list of free courses for Victoria on this website.

          https://www.vic.gov.au/free-tafe

    • I've picked a course to start the enrolment just to see if it's really free, but i did not actually click to enrol on the payment page. However today I notice my student email has been set up last night… :s

    Grad dip in bargain hunting!

    • +4

We'd pass on RPL alone wouldn't we?

  • +4

does this come with edu email?

    • +17

      Tafe stuff does…

But note when they say Fee Free, that just means the course/tuition fees, there's still various other admin fees, last time I looked it was several hundred. Which they didn't disclosure until you started signing up, in person.

      https://tafeqld.edu.au/courses/apply-and-enrol/what-it-costs…

There are two types of student fees: tuition and service. Tuition fees are for your education and training. Service fees are for additional goods and services provided to you (e.g. replacement student ID cards).

I believe this covers tuition fees only.

    • 2nd this. Does anyone know this?

      • I don't but I enrolled tonight. I'll let you know if I hear anything if no one responds sooner. :)

        • It's free. I've enrolled and commenced studies and still have zero fees. Other than the book I need to buy. However, they say I can borrow the book from the library.

This would be in demand now
    Certificate IV in Cyber Security

    • -1

Yep, but several years too late.

      • +17

What, you think cyber security is going to be less of an issue going forward?

        • +4

it would be more, but like everything else will be outsourced to a 3rd world country paying pennies since you don't have to physically be at a location to do your job.

          • +9

@Hugh G Rection: Yep. Companies want instant experts, don't want to contribute to actually skill them up. Demand increased skilled migration, complain how expensive they are and then outsource to cheaper OS companies, who do a half-arsed job because scope wasn't written by an accountant and not someone who actually has knowledge of the requirements. Same as most outsourcing, especially IT

        • +4

I'm saying the horse has bolted and now the govt is discussing building a fence.

          • @M00Cow: Yeah the government want to build cybersecurity in house due to the latest hacks

    • +4

I signed up for cyber security and first semester starts 13.2.

    • Yeah but companies also want to pay peanuts.

    • Any pen tester here? Im stuck hacking my VM for my assignment.

    • The cert 4 was very basic.
I also did the advanced diploma, I'd recommend just going straight to the bachelors.

      • Yes, but this Certificate 4 is free and good as entry, what does the Bachelor cost? 20K? For someone like me middle aged it’s probably a nice freebie for the way having my own business…

        • +4

You can always stack a few of these up over time and use the credits towards a bachelors, proper OzBargaining there.

    • +6

You might want to do a comprehension course.

The line before your bold states

will be covered by the Australian and Queensland Governments

It's all taxpayers money. So if you're a Liberal Or Nation party mate, it won't affect you 😉

      • -3

Where does the part fit that baby boomers who once had free free education now help foot the bill?

        • +5

But that would involve taxing their family trusts, investment properties and super. Have you no morals man???

          • +2

@M00Cow: Hey I'm a baby boomer and paying my own way through my masters.

            • @taddros: Good for.you! What are you studying?

    • +32

I personally have zero issue with my taxes going to help the next generation study and learn some life skills.

    • +20

I've seen worse use of taxs than reducing unemployment, filling skills gaps and promoting education

    • +3

This is literally the point of paying your taxes. Your tax gets re-invested back into the country e.g. through funding for education in this case.

Anyone found any IT courses that are online? Seems that most are on campus, which is a shame for us that are working full time.

I was eyeing the Cert 4 of Cyber Security or the Diploma of Information Technology Back End Web Development and Front End Web Development. If either of these were fee free and online, I’d be all over that.

    • QLD tafe is mostly in person

    • I applied for certificate 4 in Cybersecurity fully online here in SA and got in.

      • How did you apply fully online? Did it say it was online before you applied? The ones here seem to be in person only.

    • Doesn't the column "ways to study" indicate whether they are online or face-to-face? The back end course says it can be done online and even allows you to download a course brochure for online study…

    • freecodecamp?

  • +1

This is out since a while. I applied here in SA for certificate 4 in Cyber Security before Christmas and got a spot offered yesterday. This usually costs 7k. I do it fully online. Still have to do the CSPA but passed a specific IT test. Also don’t forget when you get in you are a student then and with your tafe email you get all the student discounts!

    • is that email permanent after you finish? since it's all online did you have to pay anything?

      • +1

I am not sure if it’s permanent, only for time of study I believe. But you could build on the course and do the diploma, advanced diploma, bachelor and graduate. I didn’t pay anything.

      • I did the Cert IV in ICT and finished about 18months ago.

I had email forwarding setup before i finished, any emails sent to my TafeSA address are still forwarded to my personal account, even after 18 months.

I also applied for the Diploma of Information Technology (Systems Administration) & (Cloud Engineering), and got accepted last night 😀

        • Did you manage to gain work after your cert 4? Wondering if its possible to gain work after doing a cert 4 in cyber

          • +1

@Pulseless: The Cert IV i did was partnered with industry experience a couple of days a week at a company.

I worked in non-IT at the same time, and I didnt really want a job with them for a number of reasons.

But. Yes I did find a job in IT a couple of months later

    • +1

I was thinking to apply for that but for semester 2, not sure if they offer it in semester 2 though. If I knew I could do it online I might as well have applied for it, although I'm working full-time now. I'm thinking to switch to part-time in July, hence the hesitation. I did Cert 4 in network security 12 years ago at Adelaide Tafe (which I never put to use), so not sure if that will come in handy.

  • Is it for canberra too?

    • +2

There is only one TAFE provider in the ACT, it is called Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). Their offering of fee-free courses is exceptionally limited: https://cit.edu.au/study/fee_free_tafe

Also, their eligibility criteria for who can qualify for fee-free for these courses is also far more restrictive; aboriginal, disabled, or unemployed or looking to work in the care sector(s).

  • can any one give me a link for vic courses

  • +1

:( If only there were some type of carpentry or building course with this. Thanks OP

    • Why not so this one?

Could also do the landscaping one. I read in the description they teach drainage and block/brick work and retaining. Might be a start into the trade? I don't know as I'm not in the trade….

  • Anyone have any idea if your a currently enrolled student at tafe?

I got on the cert 4 cybersecurity last year at a state subsidised rate.

Do i need to enroll in a brand new course…maybe diploma in cyber?

    • Bad practice to be using your name as a OSINT . Massive digital footprint for hackers wanting your deets.

      • Going to TAFE gives you a massive digital footprint?

        • +1

No he had Marx x as his user name.

    • +12

      What are you on about?

      • +5

I don’t know. Maybe he is just another troll? I think it is a fantastic idea to get free education for people in Australia to fill positions in the future in Australia. It’s better than getting people from outside of Australia to fill jobs in demand. I bet he would complain about this also.

        • a) Most people don't appreciate "free" things

          b) If higher education enables people to earn a high salary, they should have to pay for it.

          c) In America 45% of university graduates are employed in jobs that don't require university degrees. Like the US, Australia has a massive oversupply of university graduates. Lots of jobs don't require much more than basic numeracy and literacy, a Year 7 education. We need people to pick fruit, mow lawns, look after oldies in nursing homes, deliver online purchases, process food, clean gutters, etc.

Checked their other comments. Clearly lives a very sad life. I wouldn’t waste your time with this kid.

      • Sounds like a case of exacerbated lockdown #isobrain pain

Whose a dude, last time I looked in the mirror I had a flat earther between my legs.

  • -2

can I use any QLD address or it has to be legit ?

  • +2

Anything here that would be worthwhile / doable for somebody working full-time?

Thinking may be a good idea to get qualifications in entirely different field, could open opportunities down the line…

    • I was working part time in my 30s then did this online part time.

Was still too much if you have kids/share.

My mate was just working from his home and wasn't able to finish it part time

  • +1

Was trying to find an ICT course or an Accounting course, but all are on campus, and nothing for online, nighttime or weekend. Simply can't do with a full-time job.

Will have to pass on this opportunity, what a shame.

    • i can see there is accounting online available (cert iv or dip), which is better than nsw as there is at most virtual classroom which isn't suitable to my time.

      • Which one please? Care to paste the link here for me please?
I was looking at the "Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping" but it said the study is "Mix mode"? So it means both online and on campus are required? Don't think I can make it.

    • I would look at USQ. They do all their courses online.

  • -3

Like with almost everything now, to qualify to get this free you just simply need to IDENTIFY as a "First Nation Australian".

You don't actually need to be Aboriginal or anything.

The offer applies to those living in SA or QLD, too.

    • +3

      No

1 Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency

      2 Queensland resident

      3 No longer at school

4 Not currently enrolled in training.

      • -5

I identified as a FNP from the Northern Territory and got in straight away.

Just do it. You'll get in straight away, too.

        • +1

          Bad mojo.

They are at a disadvantage and you are pretending to be one of them?

Do you also park in disabled car parks?

          • -2

@Korban Dallas: Wow, what's with the racism you bigot.

I'm not disadvantaged because I'm black.

            • +3

@infinite: You are encouraging people to lie on their application?

I never said you were disadvantaged personally. I said you might be taking a spot away from a disadvantaged person.

Also it's statistically and very unfortunate that…

Disadvantage may have both immediate social, economic and cultural determinants, and deeper underlying causes.
              shorter life expectancy.
              higher rates of infant mortality.
              poorer health.
lower levels of education and employment.

        • -5

Also I recommend identify as some sort of transgender. They are currently the most priviledged group in Western countries. The government and woke corporations will go out of their way to help you if you belong to the right minority groups.

      • Is this for One Certificate/Diploma, or can you sign up for multiple ones (eg/ online only), and have them be covered by the Fee-Free Initiative?

  • +3

    Certificate III in Sterilisation Services

    DIY vasectomy here we come!

(Yes, I know, not that kind of sterilisation.)

  • its not free you pay through your tax.

    • Yes but because everyone pays tax it’s only minor for the individual…

      • -1

Australia has just shy of 26 million people and only a bit more than 13 million are gainfully employed.

Half the country literally pays for the other.

    • +1

Exactly.. And since I have to pay tax either way I may as well take advantage of it.

  • +1

This also applies to VET courses run by Central QLD University:

    https://www.cqu.edu.au/cquninews/stories/general-category/20…

I've done VET courses at both CQU and TAFE Qld, can CQU is far better. CQU runs university-standard courses and you have the full resources of a university.

    • Thanks. Would they over these by distance? Wasn't quite clear.

    • I'll post this too.
