PC Gaming over Wi-Fi / Casting

Wondering if anyone has any advice on for how to game at a TV in a separate room over WiFI with minimal or no lag? I bought a Steam Link years ago but it has noticable delay which makes it hard to play anything half fast paced. Just want to grab a controller and play some simple Steam games on the big screen in the comfort of couch rather than at the PC.

WiFi is Asus AX XT8 which is pretty pricey / fast.

PC is connected via Ethernet to node and dedicated wireless backhaul to main router.

Steam Link is Ethernet to main router so WiFi.

I think the Steam Link is just rubbish? Expected I guess for $7 or whatever it cost back then.

Even simple games like Sonic (original) has too much delay to be played without being annoying.

PC specs:
i7-6800k
32GB DDR4 3200mhz
RTX 3080

Any advice appreciated.

  • Do you have a laptop?

If so, I've had a phenomenal experience with Parsec for the exact same scenario, just streaming from the desktop to the laptop, with the laptop connected to the TV

    • I have read about Moonlight but not Parsec. I have a work laptop so long as doesn't require admin to install (portable) I'll be OK. Will checkout Parsec, thank you.

  • +1

I do not have the issues you are having with Steam Link. The problem is possibly somewhere between the node and the wireless because a cable connection end to end should run very nicely.

    • Thanks, will try run Ethernet direct but can pull 800-900Mbps Internet download over WiFi so would think WiFi isn't a problem. Will try tomorrow.

      • Your issue is likely latency related, not bandwidth.

      • Speed likely isn't the culprit though, it'll be the jitter and packet loss that'll really impact the experience without the speed dropping at all. Congested spectrum could also contribute but that'll also impact your speeds, so less likely in your case.

Haven't had any issues with my Steam Link when wired, although I was also experimenting with installing Moonlight onto it although didn't make a huge difference for my very limited testing.

      • Let us know how you go. It's a rewarding little system.
If anyone is interested, there's a Steam Link app for Android (unsure about iOS) to stream PC games to your phone, as well as a Pi version too. If you're motivated enough, you can also set it up to stream movies from your PC.

  • I'm thrilled by the improved performance from the new Sunshine release v0.17.0 today…

The remote cursor now barely trails behind the host hardware cursor. (Ctrl Shift Alt C to toggle cursor visibility in Moonlight.)

In my opinion, the latency is not bested by GeForce Experience anymore, which official software NVIDIA happens to be discontinuing!

  • Runs like crap even with Ethernet. Steam link etc is a fail in my eyes for high end stable gaming.
