This is probably the same deal as this one but at a lower price point for those who don't need a 4-pk: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/743719

Part of the reason I'm promoting this is because I'd like to tell how I've finally got a solution for automatically turning off device charging at 80% battery level!
It only works for the iPhone and iPad, unfortunately. The Google Home app currently does not appear to be sophisticated enough to do this for Android devices.

Steps: Shortcuts app; Automation; + [create new automation]; Create Personal Automation; Battery Level; When Battery Level Rises Above 80%; Next; Apps - Home; Control My Home; Set "Scenes and Accessories"; Smart Wi-Fi Plug; Next; Ensure Smart Wi-Fi Plug has "Turn Off" selected; Done; Next; Done; Toggle off "Ask Before Running"; Done. Ensure "Enable this Automation" is selected. You can also also make it play a sound by adding these Actions to the script: Set Volume to 80%; Play sound "Current Date"; Set Volume to 20%
I also have an Automation to play a sound "When battery level falls below 40%"

Note that the Meross Matter Smart Wi-Fi Plug will probably be released soon but judging by the US/CA version price (in USD) it probably will be more expensive than the version in this deal. https://shop.meross.com/products/meross-matter-smart-wi-fi-p…

    FYI these are awesome.

    • got any use case scenarios?

      • I’m using similar stuff to control dumb fans, rice cooker and fan heaters.

        • I’d love to hear what you use this with the rice cooker for

          • +7

@cloudy: Stop the cooking when it's 80% cooked. The rice is aldente and you save on electricity.

            • @krisspy: Oh cool, so how do you know when 80% cooked is? Rice cooker function? Or you just know the time to shut off the power?

              • @cloudy: Rice cookers are much simpler than you think. Just cook once to you’d like, write down the time and set the timer on the smart plug next time you cook.

I use it mainly to remotely turn everything off, not just lights but also appliances, when leaving home or go to sleep, so they don’t waste electricity or burn out.

                • @xmagic: I think my problem is sometimes I make 2 cups sometimes I make 1.5 or sometimes I make 3. It all depends on how many people or hungry or left overs I want.

In my case, I doubt your method works for me.

But I do see how remote turn off is good.

                  • @cloudy: Does it matter the quantity?

I microwave rice (I'm lazy, sue me) and no matter how many cups I'm cooking it's always 19mins in the oven and water up to the first line of my finger from the top of the rice.

                    Rice is somehow magical

                    • @krisspy: Yea, the more cups the longer it takes to cook the rice in the rice cooker. Water is double rice level, which means more water for more rice and therefore more cooking

      • +1

As OP mentioned, lots of automation can be done. All depends on your imagination really!

I have some of the kogan tuya based ones. Use cases are:

Electric blankets when it is cold (so every other week in Melbourne during summer) - leave the blanket in the on position, switch it on and off with the smart plug. Auto scheduled to turn off at a certain time in case we forget
Lamp on the other side of the bedroom - get into bed and turn off via phone/scheduled time
While we're away, lights go on and off to make it look like people are home
Christmas lights - schedule them for on/off.
Vornado DC fan - turn on/off remotely (when we need to dry clothes inside we use one of these on low speed)

The problem with these ones is they're fat and they block the adjacent plug. The slimmer ones don't do that.

        • Yea my Philips Hue one does that. But at only $7 at my Bunnings it’s not a bad buy

          • @jjno41: what $7? philips hue one?

            • @aec: Yeah apparently deleted item so $7 along with $10 large filament globes. W.A

              • @jjno41: Great discount - what store did you see that at? I was at O’Connor on Sunday and didn’t notice those discounted even though they’re in stock

        • i didn't think of electric blankets, good idea!

          • +1

@Magicmannn: We have one that had separate units each side of the bed so use one of those Y cables to connect them both to one smart plug

  • I have the Meross garage door opener, thing is offline about 50% of the time, very unreliable

    • Can concur, I grabbed a three pack of these awhile back and they drop their bundle all the time. Now sitting in a drawer.

    • +5

Mine works well, zero dropouts. I oringinally had same issue, and after a lot of forum reading, the resolution for me was to create a separate network on my Router, only make it 2.4GHZ and ensured I had a wifi access point broadcasting not too far away from the garage. Never dropped since and have two setup now.

      • @jakc is this hard to do?

    • +2

Weird, never had an issue with mine

    • Probably because your internet is not good and keep disconnecting. Somehow Meross’s HomeKit devices will go offline when they don’t have internet access. All of my Meross HK devices show the same behaviour. I don’t know how they got HomeKit certified for this. Anyway I isolate all of them in an internet only VLAN and block them from talking to everything else on the home network except HomePods. Works just fine.

      • My internet and modem are very fast and signal to it is full. I'm with Leaptel that are rarely down for maintenance.
How do I separate from my other 2.4 and 5ghz devices?

        • What router do you have? Do you have additional wifi access points like a mesh network?

          • @toecutter69: Netgear Nighthawk X45 (D7800)

            No mesh network, 500/50 speeds

            • @Lionheart: Will have a look at their manual later today. Essentially you want to create an additional WAN network (a 2nd wifi) which you target most of your smart devices and cameras. This network you restrict to only use 2.4, and later on you might also apply different security rules to it. Such as preventing devices phoning home.

              • @toecutter69: I wasn't even aware I could make another wifi network and have different settings for it. Basically I have every that that works with 5ghz on that, 2.4ghz for everything that isn't yet compatible

        • +1

You'll need to set different SSID for both 2.4g/5g to force separation. My system (UniFi network) has dedicated IoT subnet and SSID that doesn't broadcast 5ghz at all, so it's easier to manage.

The internet issue doesn't have to be the last mile problem. Meross uses their own NTP server for syncing time and call home randomly.
          https://imgur.com/Phk9Uc3
If this process is failed somehow (it might not be yours or ISP's problem), the device will go offline and unusable.

          • @xmagic: I'd love to get the bottom of this, it'd be such nice piece of mind knowing I can rely on it

ps: just checked, offline again for me at the moment

          • @xmagic: Can you set it to use a different server to?

            • @brocky2006: I don't think so as it's a part of their firmware. If the distance and interference is definitely not a problem in your setup, you might want to return it and try a different brand/model instead. It's just pity that there are not many players of certified HomeKit garage openers and other options are expensive.

Maybe go to their customer support and see if they have special firmware that works fully offline.

    • If you have multi-band Wi-Fi with the same SSID or Mesh Wi-Fi, you should set the preferred connection to 2.4GHz and turn off the Mesh option

      • I have 2.4ghz and 5ghz, I think it only works on 2.4ghz when I set it up

        • Yes, most, if not all, of the IOTs work only on 2.4GHz. Hence, they should be configured on the router to connect to 2.4GHz only

          • @EarlyBird: Well they only work with 2.4ghz and I setup on 2.4ghz, what more can I do?

  • Any major difference to this ?

    • +1

I don't think those ones work with Apple HomeKit.

      • +1

Correct don't work with HomeKit, however, these do have energy monitoring which the plugs that the OP noted don't have energy monitoring.

  • +1

These are fantastic, big fan of them. I use them to control my fans/heater via Siri as well as turn them on automatically in the morning in my office.
The only drawback is they are huge. They will easily take up 1.5 slots in a splitter, so you can only have 2 in a 4-port splitter.

    • +2

In your case you might want a smart power board instead. The kind that connects wirelessly and you can control each outlet individually.

      • Didn't know they existed! Do you know any that are HomeKit compatible ?

        • Depends on your budget, Cygnett or Eve have those. HomeKit power strips don’t come with a lot of options.

  • If I am holidaying in Singapore, and decided to turn on the lights at my home in Aus, would they work?

    • +1

If those lights are plugged into this, then yeah

      • WOW Amazing!

      • Does turning the lights on remotely will trigger the home motion sensor?

        • Well if there's no motion..

        • +1

Yes if the lights startle thieves who then walk in front of your sensor

  • I have 8 of this, 10 wifi light bulbs and a Smart things washing machine connected to google. The good thing about meross is you can check consumption usage. Idk if this model has that feature. I connected one to my garage power outlet on the ceiling. One to the water heater circulator. Lots of case use if you know what to do with it.

    • I have 8 of this, 10 wifi light bulbs and a Smart things washing machine connected to google. The good thing about meross is you can check consumption usage.

Which Smartthings washing machine do you have? I have one too and it has a power consumption monitor built in, that you can access from the Smartthings app.

Can also use Smartthings to remote control the washing machine.

      • i have a samsung WW75T504DTW. yes u are right. the smartthings app does have the energy monitor. What i like about the meross app is it can calculate dollar value usage too.

  • Sold! Thanks OP. Was looking for something to turn a device on/off remotely

  • +3

    I have these

What I like - You can monitor energy consumption and use it to claim WFH expenses if you like. It also estimates your electricity cost based on cost per unit. Schedules. Well designed app.

What I dislike - They're fat. Really fat. They block the adjacent plug. HATE IT. Prepare to spend another $10 to get a couple of these to actually the socket/plug NEXT to it.

    • Sadly the Homekit version doesn't have energy monitoring "None Energy Monitor Function". The non HomeKit has energy monitoring

    • can you still fit the double adaptor to the adjacent plug if Meross is too fat and blocking the adjacent plug?

      • You barely can. They both will not sit flush with the socket, showing a little gap, a few mm. So have to get a couple of sockets and split them up. Or use a 4 plug socket extension.

    • Came to post the exact same thing! They are a great tool for home automation etc. I have alerts setup for when the washing machine finishes. I have one setup to turn on my PC monitor (actually an OLED TV) when it starts using power.

But the size of these, far to big and a major pain with the dual outlets in my house.

  • I love using these for my lights, I get them to turn on and off automatically at set times during the day, plus they all are linked up to Google Home so I can individually get the Assistant to activate whichever one.

  • These things are huge. May take up more than one slot on your powerboard or wall socket.

  • -1

I wouldn’t buy these if you plan on using them with Apple HomeKit. I got these for Christmas and they basically not compatible. Every time you try to add them to HomeKit it fails and I have tried so many different things. The internet is full of people with similar experiences and no official process on how to resolve.

They do work with the Meross app thankfully, but features are limited.

    • +1

I acquired a 4-pack. They work fine under Homekit but don't appear in the Meross app. Whenever I've had trouble with my home automation devices the issue has always been on my side, something I've inadvertently done to my wifi network.

    • Had similar setup issue initially, but found issue was with my wifi network which is mixture of 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The plug only works on 2.4GHz so your phone needs to be on the same 2.4GHz network during setup. Changed my Wifi config to use only 2.4GHz and setup in Homekit worked fine, then could revert network back to 2.4/5GHz mix for regular use.
