cheapest way to get from tullamarine airport to melb CBD for a group of 6 people?

should we try and grab a maxi taxi at the taxi rank or book a shuttle online?

cheers!

  • How long are you going for? If its only a day or so, you might find a car/van rental cheaper. Now if its longer then the costs might not stack up.

Past experience (about 10 years ago) we had to wait for a hour or so to get a maxi taxi as there were none available when we arrived

There is also the Skybus but with 6 people I think it would be cheaper to get a maxi taxi.

Skybus is $17 one way for an adult but has a $2 per person discount for group of 4 or more, so essentially $15 each. They have family discounts too, only $24 one way for an adult and up to four kids:

I always use Skybus when I go to the airport, it's a good service, runs on time and convenient.

  • Staying at a hotel? Ask them to organize the shuttle bus, probably save a few $$ there too!

You can take the 901 public bus from Tullamarine to Broadmeadows station and then rail to city. About $5 each… For a two hour travel pass

See details of 901 Smartbus route here:

Then use metlink trip planner to check Broadmeadows to city train times.

It takes longer than skybus but it's significantly cheaper.

    • this sounds good, but we fly in at 11am and have to be back at the airport by 6pm lol.

so if this takes significantly longer (i'm guessing at least an hour each way?), it might not be worth it? although…would it be the same as getting a shuttle bus from a company anyway??

  • you can hire a car for $40 a day which isn't much more than what you pay in fares especially if you don't have concession. a lot more convenient

But with car hire you need to consider city parking rates as well.

Once you add excess buyout, hiring of an e-tag to pass through tolls, parking etc it will be much more. Plus a $40/day corolla hatch is not going to fit 6 people.

  • thanks for all the replies guys!
yeah it's literally a day trip because of those crazy $18 return flights :)

hiring a car is an interesting idea, but maybe too much hassle as we don't know melbourne very well and the airport seems like quite a trek to the cbd. (plus finding parking in the city too!)

    i found a company called Jetbus which does a $24 return shuttle from tulla-CBD…seems like a go-er?

    • +1

That is only $3 cheaper than skybus. Not sure if its worth the hassle. Skybus is every 15 minutes and direct to airport no stops from Southern Cross station.

    • do you have a gps? maybe you go map out places for shopping or something, hire car allows you to go more places easier.
not sure if there's much to do in a day. unless you visiting family.

  • Just check their timetables are frequent enough for you. Some of these shuttle services only run every few hours.

    • wow, thanks for the generous offer cdeep0….unfortunately we were already back in Sydney by the time you posted your offer! Good to know for next time :)

We ended up hiring a maxi taxi, the guy was heaps nice and it was way better for our group of 6.
ended up being $70 each way (only took 20 mins into the city and about 25-30 back to the airport).
