Plumber Pressure Cleaning Now Caused Toilet to Block?

22 December I asked a plumber to pressure clean to unblock my back gully drain, he said is hair blockage

5 January or earlier my toilet blocked. My toilet was always fine before only got stuck after him

Do you think is the pressure clean causing the toilet blockage?

Spent $260 then he caused me bigger problem and I talked with the plumber he needs me to spend more money šŸ˜

If it is the case, do you think this will unblock it?

    • +2

Not sure why negged… a guy commented here on OZB a while ago that putting a tablespoon of dish washing detergent unclogs the toilet… I asked him if Hand Soap will also work, he told me to try it as he didn't know.. well, to my amazement, it works like a charm. Squirt some hand soap in, wait 5 mins and for the water to go down enough so the flush won't make it spill out of the bowl, and flush. My rare blockages are usually due to excessive use of toilet paper though.. not sure it would work in OP's situation.

I don't think the two incidents are related. 14 days is a long time in plumbing.

When the plumber turns up see if he cleans floor tile grout as well. Ewwwwww!

Also, can he bring a replacement toilet brush?

    Too much fiber op?

    • The fibre was OP

  • +2

My toilet was always fine before only got stuck after him

It sounds like the pressure-cleaning pushed the original hair-blockage further down near where your toilet pipes are so might just need to give it a second or third go.

  • OP, do yourself a favour…

Go to Bunnings and get a plunger like these 2 options…

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/plunger-the-great-handihome-toilā€¦

Go nuts pumping away for 30 seconds….

If it isn't fixed, then call the plumber, but why waste even the smallest amount of $ and stress when with $40 you can do it yourself…

    • +2

Yeah, but if it doesn't work, will Bunnings take returns of these?

      • +1

        Worth a shot.

I can vouch for plunger the great..

      • Agree that it's definitely worth a shot… You just have to plunge plunge plunge, try and compress the water/air to force out the blockage… it's not just a quick plunge either, you have to just keep going with as much displacement as you can manage for a few minutes until there is some sort of sign of it being resolved.

        • I tried plunge, the dirty water gone but it still stuck,

I also tried toilet auger sometimes the whole auger go all the way in, sometimes the auger got stuck and can't push forward and only leave me that distance

The tenant did say she drop the toilet cleaner holder there today šŸ˜… is that means highly likely not plumber fault?

          Would this help fixing it?

@fungyou100: Do you mean she dropped the toilet brush holder into the toilet and managed to flush it???

Edit: but I can see the toilet brush holder in the photo. What did you mean?

            • +2

@kiitos: i think he meant those nice smelling toilet block holders that goes onto the inside of the toilet bowl ..or iā€™m assuming thatā€™s what he meant

          • @fungyou100: The septic tank treatment would be unlikely to do anything to help a blockage, and would just end up back over you when you try to unblock it.

  • +5

Do you think is the pressure clean causing the toilet blockage?

    no.

  • +10

Wow, that looks like a filthy servo toilet in the middle of nowhere.

    • +1

Stewie: No! No! It was literally only on the floor. All right? There was no attempt to get near the toilet. It's like they just… Pressed their buttocks against the wall. The only part of the floor that didn't have poo on it was the part that had baby on it.

The answer is - possibly. If your property doesn't have a reflux valve fitted, it is very possible that pressure works in the general sewerage system can cause blow back through toilets. This is not the plumber/water utilities fault, it's an issue with the property.

Further, the dislodgement of the 'hair' (it may have been a full on fatberg for all we know), may have cleared one way but not the other - in otherwords, the plumber cleared to the sewer but should have been pressure cleaning the pipes from the various IPs on the property (again, assuming these are accessible).

You can fix this issue (see the previous suggestions) but access to IPs will make it go a lot faster and with less chance of s**t ending up all over your walls (which does happen).

    • -1

"pressure cleaning the pipes from the various IPs on the property "?? what is ips

I pay 260 is for him to solve drain block problem, if he cause more drain block problem that mean that is his fault
he should need to come and fix it included in the price

so you think using Plunger will work?

        • IP - inspection points.

Ideally, your property system should resemble:

street ————IP (usually in council crossover (bottom of driveway) —— reflux valve ————- IP outside toilet ———— IP outside bathroom ———-> etc

Often, the IPs get covered by pavers, driveways etc.

The plumber seems to have found a blockage somewhere 'downstream'

(probably around here X - cleaned <-------) (ideally, should have cleaned <-------)

street ———— IP (usually in council crossover (bottom of driveway) ———- IP outside toilet ———— IP outside bathroom ———-> etc

I would find the IP outside the toilet, open it and start flushing from there, towards the street. Hopefully that will move the paper and dislodge the backup. Once the water is sufficiently clear flowing in the IP on the cross over, then you can start to slowly plunge

Plunging now, with no way of creating suction and nowhere for it to go will not end well.

          • @Benoffie: I tried plunge, the dirty water gone but it still stuck,

I also tried toilet auger sometimes the whole auger go all the way in, sometimes the auger got stuck and can't push forward and only leave me that distance

            • +2

@fungyou100: Mate, if theres a chunk of plastic down there, that drain needs serious mechanical work.

And no, thats definitely not the plumbers fault - your tennant should be held responsible for costs out of stupidity šŸ™„

              • +1

@Benoffie: reminds me of my tenants reporting a blocked kitchen sink half full of light brown dishwater

I unscrewed the U-bend (over a bucket to catch the stored water) and found …

several chopsticks in the pipe U-bend that had then caught every other bit of hair and rubbish and clogged and blocked the drainpipe

I guessed a young tenant had maybe cleaned them the East Asian way - rubbing a bunch of chopsticks vertically between your hands under a running tap as the quickest way to rub food off many chopsticks - and … some had slipped down the sink

that was a WTF moment - something I'd never seen before - but relatively easily fixed

if OP's tenant has flushed a larger plastic basket that is now blocking the whole pipe, that would be a deffo charge to the tenant to pay - ima guess $4-600+ for a plumber to dismantle pipes and remove the item - and a life lesson for the tenant about the consequences of carelessness

if the tenant already admitted dropping the toilet cleaner holder down the sink, case closed.

            • +1

@fungyou100: If it is the toilet cleaner holder stuck down there then no that will have no effect at clearing the issue. You will need a plumber.

      • How do you think these are related? Do you think your other drain is conected to your sewer line?

  • +9

I had a plumber come over a few months back, but when he left, my Windows PC kept crashing…
I know it was the plumber because Windows was working fine before he came.

  • +3

You do that yourself OP? Very impressive for a single sitting.

    • mate needs to look at what he eats lol

  • +4

Pro tip, when you pay for a plumber to jet your pipe, get him to jet all the pipes and check the sewer is running fine into the inspection pipe before he leaves.

  • Holy sh!t.

  • +1

Looks like every other gluten free brownie I've seen.

  • Tell him to jet upstream this time

  • Give Drain Addict a call…

  • +1

This happened to us. The plumber cleared the downstream blockage.

But they also did a half hearted upstream jet which pushed a bunch of shit and toilet paper into the under house pipework. It quickly blocked over two weeks and had to call them out again. They went under the house and jetted everything downstream into the sewer.

    • +2

We need pictures if you want us to believe you.

      • +3

Heh no pictures. But the apprentice said " i hate this job" as he manually cleared the blocked pipe under the house

    • +1

Did you have to pay for the second visit? I think that's what the OP wants to know.

  • Do the sinks in the house still drain?

  • +1

Well if you really think its all the plumbers fault call him but $260 sounds cheap to fix a plumbing problem.

Plumbing can often not be simple.

Depending on the design plumbing can be hard to clear blockages due to lack of access points and bends etc. Luckily for me when we had problem a problem i put lid down on toilet couple bricks on lid then garden hose full pressure sent up pipe cleared the problem.

Stormwater was a bigger problem for us due to numerous semi crushed pipes due to over compaction of trenches at time of build (30 year old house). We have owned house about 7 years i had to replace many sections but have installed 8 access caps on a angle so if the blockage occurs a plumbers snake can be sent down with ease in any direction. Pots sit on these access points around the garden so the caps are not buried.

Houses are not designed for easy plumbing access in the future if i ever build my own house i would get the plumber to design for future maintenance.

Im not as fit as i use to be so took a while to get it all sorted.

    • It amazes me how badly some builds are done, with few or no inspection points actually installed, pipework not lining up to the plans, etc. I wish builds were done with a little thought for future maintenance…

  • +1

Looks like the prep before a colonoscopy.

  • +1

    Shit happens mate

  • You need Moflo!

  • I doubt itā€™s related. What exactly did the tenant drop down the toilet? Was it plastic or metal?

My personal favourite ā€œdrain cleanerā€ is half a litre of concentrated H2SO4 into the bowl, let it sit for an hour, then use a bucket to slowly pour water into and ā€œflushā€ the acid (and dissolved/goopified crud) away.

Sounds like you may only have 2 options- get a long sleeve glove and stick your hand into the bowl and a-bend and see if you can manually clear it if itā€™s a plastic obstruction, or get the/another plumber out to fix it.

Also the style of plunger you have is close to useless. The accordion type plunger thatā€™s linked to above at Bunnings works much much better, quicker and with less effort (it has the power to even push water pack up other drains if you have a genuine blockage between you and the street). If a plunger will shift it, thatā€™s the plunger you need. Only about $30.

Good luck man. Thatā€™s a shitty thing to happen. (Pardon the pun)

    • That's what I said. Moflo. Its no use telling people to use "concentrated H2SO4" if they don't know where to go for it and what to ask for. Go to the hardware/plumbing store and look for Moflo. And they should be very very careful when using it, because it breaks down ANY organic material it or its vapors touch, and gets very hot when it does it.

      • Fair call. I had NFI what moflo was lol. Supercharge it with some bleach for ultimate dissolving power rofl

  • +1

Yeah well bold nsfl just made me wanna click it more fml

Nuke it from orbit. Itā€™s the only way to be sure.

  • +1

Eat some f**king fibre OP and cut out the goddamned KFC buckets.

  • +1

    correlation is not causation

  • if the tenant dropped the toilet brush and its stuck in the s bend cheapest solution is to replace toilet bowl itself that way you're removing the obstruction . Tenant to pay for new toilet

  • yummy chocolate mouse, my fav!!!

    • Mouse on a stick is best. Mouse mousse is delicious too ;)

  • Get a toilet bidet thing installed so you use less toilet paper.

  • I am trying so hard not to click it.
