Paid $33 for this same one last year.

Lithium carbonate traded at 318K/tonne 1 year ago, now 482K/tonne. That's like $33 to $50.

      :-)

      • +27

Good point. Also, last year, power bank interest rates were much lower

        • +1

          hahah comment of the year.

      • Would cobalt price is cheaper ? Since this is HOW / WHO used to mined it

    • Paid $49ea for two of the 30w/30Ah version last week. Didn't post because I didn't realise what a good deal it was. Anyone else?

    • +1

      Paid $28 in Dec 2019

Can these things be taken as carry-on luggage on a plane?

I've read the Casa rules and they have special restrictions for 100 to 160 Wh external batteries (I assume the ROMOSS has 5V x 30Ah = 150Wh).

Has anyone had their device confiscated when boarding?

    • -5

I dont think anyone checks that.. If you didnt post this I wouldnt have known and taken it onboard

      • +9

I dont think anyone checks that..

        They do random checks.
You sign a declaration stating you are not carrying any batteries exceeding the limit. This one clearly does exceed the limit.

Maximum penalty: 1,000 penalty units or imprisonment for 4 years, or both, for an individual or 5,000 penalty units for a body corporate.

This is a very timely warning. There are really good reasons these things are regulated — you don’t want to be on a plane when one goes off! I’ve actually just got out on probation after trying to sneak one of these babies onto a plane, and I can’t tell you how many other people were on the inside telling me they were there for the exact same reason. Fortunately they let me keep the power bank, and it served me well during those times the other inmates clogged up the recharging points in the common areas

When I was in Dubai in December, they checked everyone's bags.

The water I bought at the airport was a no no.

This battery was fine. I'm not sure how strict these rules were.

I'm not sure how strict these rules were.

Not worth the risk of starring in the next episode of 'Airport Security'

        • Really? I brought this exact one across Europe 3 years ago

          • +1

            @FallaM:

            Really?

            Yes.

You made a false declaration in carrying dangerous goods.

            • @jv: had to 100% agree to jv for this time.

      • Just make a transit via Malaysia/Indonesia and you would for sure be checked thoroughly. I can bet on this 😃

      • +3

I've had my 20,000mAh checked multiple times.

        • My 20,000 mAH ones (Blitzwolf and Xiaomi) are only 74Wh each so they're under the 100Wh limit, check yours

          • @Serapis: Regardless if its under they check it. Source. Have brought as many as 4x 20,000mAh powerbank in one go. They looked at sees it within the allowable watt hour rating. And im on my way.

      • Yep had batteries checked over Christmas period departing Christchurch New Zealand

    • +2

Can these things be taken as carry-on luggage on a plane?

      Nope…

    • It's 111Wh (according to the Romoss website) but that's still over the 100Wh limit :/

      • Yes indeed, 3.7v x 30Ah = 111Wh. It's measured at the internal nominal lithium cell voltage not the external output voltage.

    • I took my 20ah one on the plane last week no problem. But my loose AA batteries were apparently an issue and had to be sticky taped together before they let us through… Because sticky tape would make such a difference!

      • +4

Because sticky tape would make such a difference!

It will keep the magic white smoke from escaping silly. 🙃

      • +1

I took my 20ah one on the plane last week no problem.

        20000mAh ones are fine.
        That's what I take too.

      • +5

Of course it would. Loose batteries can spark if the terminals connect. Very unlikely but the possibility is there.

    • +2

I went through Bangkok airport 2 years ago and they were proactively checking everyones power bank making sure it was under their regulatory limit.

      • All Thai airports are still checking power bank sizes.

        • +2

I'm sitting in a Thai airport right now and can tell you that they allow up to 32,000 mAh / 160Wh packs in your carry-on luggage (max two if over 20,000).

    • +1

No but from reading I've done it seems maximum limit for powerbank size onboard most planes is 100Wh which is why you see a lot of 26800mah powerbanks as that's about the limit.

    • +2

Like others had mentioned, the internal battery voltage is 3.7v.

      So one just needs to 3.7v x 30Ah = 111Wh.

  • +1

Looking at the Camels, it seems like this voucher discounts to around the historic average price ($44.62 apparently). Looks like it was $40 for a few days in November and a few days in December - might be better to set a price alert if you want it and don't need it urgently?

  • How bulky is it for travelling?

    • ‎10.16 x 7.87 x 2.54 cm; 671 Grams

    • It's quite big and heavy

    • Great for your backpack but would be uncomfortable in your pocket. It uses up ~10% of your standard 7kg carry-one allowance. Compared to my smartphone with a case, this is about the same height and width, while slightly more than twice as thick.

      • +1

It uses up ~10% of your standard 7kg carry-one allowance

You can put it in your pocket or just hold it while your bag is getting weigh. So the weight is not included in the 7kg.

        • I actually wear a trench coat on and fill it with stuff, lmao. But I'm assuming if people are going to do that type of thing, they're probably already thinking that way.

        • +1

I weigh 300kg and carry 20kg of snacks in all my pockets when boarding a plane. So when they weigh my carry on luggage it's still under the 7kg limit. Another pro tip is to just wear all your jackets to reduce the weight of your checked in luggage. Then as soon as I waddle on to the plane I take off 12 jackets and fill an entire overhead storage compartment with them.

          • +1

@beefsandwich: I dont go this far but my denim jacket is usually loaded with 2× 20000 mAh powerbank. A digital camera. An action cam. And batteries. At least 3 to 4kg off my hand carry. Once passed the checkin counter i shove all the contents of jacket into my hand carry.

I'd really advise against getting this for a flight. It's heavy for it's battery capacity and it's likely overkill. If you're travelling on-road (road trip or long-haul train) this is a decent option.

If you're flying, a 10,000mAh battery will never cause issue and is likely enough for up to 2 days away from a powerpoint, and enough for any flight on a plane without a power outlet (big long hauls generally have a power outlet for you as LCCs like Jetstar won't usually run them). If you're really wanting security, or bringing a pack for 2, 20,000mAh will suffice.

The Nitecore NB10,000 and NB20,000 are super slim and lightweight, as well as water-resistant. They also do passthrough (ie you can charge them at the outlet and they can continue charging your phone, effectively acting like an extension cable). They'd be my reccos.

      • Jetstar has usb slots on their tablets you can use for charging

        • Depends on the model. They'll fly whatever they can with an A320 and those don't have in-flight entertainment. The USB outlet is also very low wattage so could take a fair while to charge - if you're watching videos you are likely to be using battery faster than you are charging.

  • +1

I got this for $33 last year. Will wait. This is a bit bulky but does charges iPhones multiple times at leadt

  • Definitely not advertised capacity. Decent unit though. Have had two 20k ones. One melted recently on top of an air bnb fire place and the other was gifted.

    • +5

One melted recently on top of an air bnb fire place

Not a good place to put a powerbank. Lucky it didn't explode.

    • +3

Most things melt on top of a fire place.

Have one of these. It's been great but is starting to swell 12 months on.

    • +1

Everyone should have at least one spicy pillow in their life

    • Yep I had one of these that was great for a year but swelled shortly after and had to be retired.

  • Any recommendations for batteries with MagSafe built in?

  • The actual mAH of this brand is way off and it was disappointing. I had 20000 mAH listed but actual was around 12000 or 13000 mAH.

    • How do you test it?

      • For my comparison, I have XIAOMI 20000 mAH powerbank, which used to charge by s20FE atleast 3 full cycles of charge and close to 60% on fourth one, which is like 17000 mAH considering 5000 mAH battery on my phone. This RAMOSS branded one goes for 2 charges and leaves 20% on the third. I tried to use on my mac for 50W charge and it just drains in minutes, Seems if you use fill 50W charge device the capacity drops pretty quickly.

    • +2

All of them are off. Advertised capacity are based on the nominal cell voltage 3.7v and not the supplied voltage which is 5v. You're never gonna get 20000mah out of this or any powerbank when your phone is sucking 5/9/12v out of it.

Every powerbank manufacturer advertises like this. Watt hours should be the standard but here we are.

      • I'm not disagreeing.

But just to add more to the story, the battery inside the phone you are charging is typically also 3.7v.

The up-voltage (out of the battery pack) and charging circuitry (in the phone) do consume some of the power, but that's just inevitable.

    • +1

that's how these work, they dont do 5v they take 3.7v nominal cell voltage. you gotta do some math

Anker and Baesus are often said to be good. But when it comes to Romoss, it just stands for low build quality according to reviews lol

        • +1

I have one.. build quality of this powerbank is fine..

Can't comment for their other products, or if it achieves the 30,000mAh rating.

    • I really like this one at its ~88wh or 23800mah (tested at 19000mah which is actually pretty good) so you can take it on a plane:

      https://amzn.asia/d/9JnuS3p

I guess the other way to look at it is its pretty much a genuine 20000mah. Unlike the 20's that test at 12000mah etc

  • Checked my email. Paid $40 for it back in 2019.

I'm surprised they still sell the same model 3 years later.

    • +1

Yeah, when I read that it charges "12.6 to iPhone 8, 7.2 to Samsung S9" I assumed it was an older device.

      • +2

lol.. then again, it's a powerbank with QC.

As long as it doesn't require a MicroUSB cable to charge, I'm happy.

  • I have this power bank. I recommend it. Nothing bad to say about it, its a good power bank.

  • Anyone got a link to a sub 100wh power bank that they'd recommend?

  • +1

I bought this exact model, and it broke in a month (couldn't recharge). It is a trash brand. It has a weird feature I think where you can plug in 2 cables to get max charging rate. 30,000 model is a weird size - too big to travel even locally. I have 38,000 models and use them for dash cams or 24/7 load like mobile broadband but usually at fixed locations and not to carry. For travel the sweet spot is 10,000-15,000mah for various reasons, so long as you can find one that charges quickly. Also there are better models with pass-through charging and a percentage display which is surprisingly useful instead of the 4 dots. To check the actual capacity you can get USB power meters, or just run a long load like a 10W USB fan, and that's where the percentage display comes in handy. Sometimes the dots aren't accurate … I've had some which stop after 3 dots when you'd think there was 25% capacity remaining.

  • I had 20k version for 2 years, very occasional use. Possibly using 1 2 times a month. But now dropped a cell, barely charges my phone to 50%.
So id say build quality is not great based on similar comments. YMMV

  • I only buy 25k and below powerbanks for airline reasons.

  • Great for the kids in the car. I have three. Would highly recommend.
