Breville Dual Boiler Espresso Machine BES920BSS $999 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Harvey Norman

410

Not an all time low (just under 900) but less than half (the inflated) RRP.

Apparently a good machine, I assume it goes brrrrt on the beans and sploooosh on the water very well.

      • +2

Nope, just more than happy to point out better options given 4 stores are all selling at the same price

      • +2

        Not 'officially'. wink wink…

        Here we go

      • +7

There’s a guy named Gerry and there’s a system called tax

Put those two together and it doesn’t smell good

        • +2

"Gerry Harvey is everything that's wrong with JobKeeper - AFR"?

          • +5

@conza: I still want to know how Gerry claimed Jobkeeper when he doesn't hire any staff at Harvey Norman. Let me explain.

Harvey Norman franchises and when your time is up as a franchise you need to hand the business back to Jerry.
Electrical, Computers, furniture and bedding are always different franchisees in every store.

The franchisees hire staff under their own ABN.

Jerry Harvey doesn't do retail. He does Assets, Advisory and Financials. He lends the stores money to buy goods and if not sold in time then he takes a cut (financials) He also owns all the stores, walls, light fixtures etc (assets) and some JB HI FI stores as they're in the same complex.

So how did he get Jobkeeper when he doesn't hire staff, the franchisees do?

            • @neofelis: I get it now, yep, he should never have been allowed to claim Jobkeeper. He says, he paid the money to franchises, I don't think he should have been allowed to from my understanding either.

Not an all time low (just under 900)

    I paid $700 in 2018

    • Nice how is it going all these years later? Bought one recently, any issues?

      • +6

Generally pretty good, nothing compares to the value.

The steam wand snapped off and they want $150 for the spare part. Electronics starting to sound funny when you press buttons so I'm half tempted to sell and rebuy instead of keeping it alive and becoming a Breville subscriber.

I have a funny feeling I'm about to be whacked with $300+ to service/repair and if I sold for around $400 would prefer to buy new. Breville repair costs remind me of the Seinfeld medicine joke, find out what will kill me and dial it back a notch.

        • +1

If you want to repair yourself there's a discord with all the info on how to fix every part

        • +2

I'm getting the same vibe here. Almost of 5 yrs of usage and things start to mysteriously breaking down on me.

        • Had the weird electric sound too, after about 2 years… Honestly don't think a coffee machine of this price should be playing up after 1000 or less extractions..

But even those Dyson hairdryers only come with a 2 year warranty so…

    • Good price, don't recall all time low I think $610?

      I paid 639.20 in 2017.

    • $725 is the best post-pandemic price so far. Been very happy with mine so far!

    • @goingDHfast I got the dual boiler combo for $749 back in 2016 due to TGG's listing the combo as the single unit listing product code and all.

    • After accounting for 10% off gift cards and the bloke in store giving me a further discount, I paid 780 in December last year (with an additional $70 in store credit)

  • +6

I assume it goes brrrrt on the beans…

    I don't think it has a beans brrrrt-er.

I'm not knocking it as a product, just saying that the 30mm bean cannon is not present on this model.

  • +1

You can't really go wrong with this if you're looking to splash the cash as a beginner…

However then you have to be prepared to also purchase a decent grinder which will easily set you back 500$+
I wouldn't get this and then get the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for example, it won't really do this machine justice.

So if you're on a tight budget the barista express/bambino plus and a decent grinder like the Eureka Mignon specialita or baratza sette 270 is arguably a better choice.

    • +1

I’ve got the bambino plus and a eureka Mignon specialita combo, and once you dial your beans in it makes very good coffee!

    • -1

Excuse the dumb question but does this not grind the beans also? Why do you also need a different grinder?

      • +4

this doesn't have a built in grinder

    • -2

be prepared to also purchase a decent grinder which will easily set you back 500$+

or just use a Mortar and pestle

      • +1

Not sure why downvoted you can get consistent shape and high portion of fines this way, with the right technique.

While I wait for an incredible deal on a niche zero, I put beans through a cheap hangrinder then grind with mortar and pestle for espresso.

Yes, you can't dial it in beyond "this is fine enough for espresso" but I also haven't spent $600 on an interim solution.

  • isn't this regular price for this, i was hoping to get this for 899 or less

how does this compare to the gaggia classic pro?

i currently have and started with the breville duo temp pro, now looking to upgrade. i don't want to pay a fortune and trying to stay under $1000

    • +3

The BDB is by far the superior machine.

      • i know it cost more, but what exactly makes it better?

        • +2

Dual boilers with pids, so no need to temperature surf.

Lots of control over most aspects of the extraction.

    • +1

Well it practically cost $899 if you bought from the 2 options mentioned above and it is under $1000 so within your budget, so what are you on about?

      • i want to pay under $1000, doesn't mean i want to pay 999.99 lol

lowest i have seen it is 899 all the time, but i want it for less. my machine is perfectly fine and i am in no rush to get it. i would probably buy one if it is 799 and less. 899 isn't much of an ozbargain.

        • I think the all time low for the BES920 was under $600 (when I bought mine nearly 7 years ago) Post-Covid the best i've seen it for is $900. Still well worth it at that price.

    • +1

I went from delonghi dedica + their grinder -> breville 870 + built in grinder -> gaggia classic pro + eureka mignon grinder.

I'd say if you value bang for coffee and dont mind the learning curve, go with the gcp + mignon that you can pass on as family heirloom. Nothing is wrong with any breville coffee appliance, but they are coffee appliance not machine, won't last very long, depite the bdb being the king for value of money as dual boilder + pid under 900 is nuts.

Camp around gumtree or facebook marketplace could get you the setup for about 1k and less if you got lucky

      • +1

coffee appliance not machine, won't last very long

YMMV. You'll extend the life (considerably) of the BES920 by regular cleaning and occasional descaling. The main failure item seems to be the solenoid, replacements are cheap. I've pulled thousands of coffees on mine, so already have my money back, and no need for PID or other mods out of the box.

  • Looking for the best sub $300 machine for my mother . Any suggestions ?

    • If you are just starting out and don't know if its worth the money/time to go full on I suggest start out cheap and if you(they) like it then go the expensive way
Making coffee this way is more time consuming and messy

      Try here
These two machines are exactly the same
      https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/kogan-espresso-coffee-ma… $87
      https://www.harrisscarfe.com.au/electrical/kitchen-appliance… $225

Here is a review of that machine
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwpH4m7C97Y

For what its worth i have that machine and it makes a cup of coffee
Would i upgrade? only if/when it breaks Maybe

      • That review…
There's more space in the portafilter let's add more coffee
The harder you tamp the better the espresso…
15bar pressure makes better foam and non bitter coffee

Yeh nah let's not trust this review …

        • Yah, lets heat the machine without water and bun it out…
Lets make coffee with brand new machine without flushing water out…
Lets make coffee without heating PF and warming machine…
Lets call his final end product a Cappuccino…
          True amazing review :)

      Aeropress.

  • I would like to just point out while we are all waiting for an $899 deal. These are 1100 GBP in the UK and $1600 USD in the US. Breville products are literally the only items in the history of the global economy that not only arent subject to the Arsetralia tax, they are cheaper. Breville is an Australian company (listed on the ASX) but that's never stopped anyone in the past (just ask my gas company)

    • +1

That’s because everywhere else it’s not called Breville but ‘Sage’
I’d pay double for that logo haha

      • Sage in EU, Breville in US. As another example, the yanks pay $300+ USD for the fast slow pro lol suckers.

  • If you don't mod this machine, then it's a waste of its talent :D

    • +1

Let's be honest - most people who do the slayer mod and can actually taste the difference would be quite rare.

      • +1

I don't feel a difference, but it saves a lot of shots from going bad!!!!!!

  • yeah $850 in 2017 but manage to bring it down to $920 recently

  • Mine is still going strong. $799 then they threw in the $100 Cashback via Redemption back in April 2017.
So $699 in the end. Only had to replace a SOLENOID VALVE ASSEMBLY back in 2020 but that was easy.

My recommendation is invest in a really good coffee grinder, better than the Smart grinder.
