Car Cigarette Lighter Stopped Working

My Camry cigarette lighter stopped working suddenly.

Changing the blown fuse didn’t help. Thought of changing the lighter socket but then realised that there’s simply no current coming to it. Is there any other circuit breaker somewhere in the car apart from the obvious fuse?

Any other ideas?

  • Wow didnt know anyone actually used these!
    Sorry nothing helpful to add.

Car USB chargers use this so this is the most likely scenario for OP.

      • I actually had one delivered today ha

    • Many not new cars have an inbuilt low amp usb2.0 charger which takes forever to charge a phone. It's better to buy a higher amperage phone charger to plug into the cigarette L socket.

    There shouldn't be.

Probably worth getting an auto-elec to have a look at it. If you replaced the fuse, and the fuse didn't immediately blow again but you're still not getting any current coming through the lighter socket, then there's something weird going on with the wiring.

  • Double-check the fuse is in properly - then check if there's voltage at the fuse itself. Had issues with loose fuses, faulty (but look OK) fuses etc that are simple but annoying to diagnose.

I thought I read somewhere that part of the COVID management strategy by the government was for all car cigarette lighters to be remotely disabled as from 23 January 23.

Some vehicles also have a fuse at the lighter socket as well as the main fuse block.

Usually known as a fusible link, they generally just look like a piece of wire.

  • Check it at the source. Grab a multimeter and check the socket where the cigarette fuse is getting power. If you're getting power there, check for voltage where the wiring connects to the cigarette socket.

You can probably get it swapped out for an actual USB port these days.

Might help to know what model Camry. There’s plenty of different ones.

There may be a secondary fuse under the bonut thingy. Is there anything else not working? Some vehicles the cog lighter is a separate fuse, others it’s the same circuit as other stuff.

Very hard to diagnose something other than a blown fuse without being able to crawl around in the car.

nothing like lighting a winnie blue up from the cigarette lighter whilst in traffic, those were the days back in the 80s

Did you probe/dmm the fuse socket to learn there was no power to the lighter socket?

  • You have passed your knowledge limit, and none of us are under your dash.

Time for a visit to a sparky.
