Unsure where to post this. Going by the groups on Facebook, Costco Australia will be releasing a different type of membership aka Executive Membership. it's double the price but apparently you can earn cashback on your purchases.

Their spend is mostly on clothes. They have three kids: 17,13,8

Pretty sure he only planned on spending $20 when originally arriving there too :)

  • They arent doing it to be nice to you, I reckon they expected more 'members' in the first place

last yr - 'Costco Australia currently boasts 200,000 members and sales in the year to August rose from $2.6 billion in 2020 to $2.8 billion last year'

This membership exists in the UK. It's nothing more than a 2% cashback scheme aimed at cash & carry shops (convenience stores) really.

You would need to spend $6,000 there to break even on $120 membership (assumed price if double normal).

Does that pretty much cover everything in-store except grocery items?

I can't believe they don't give cashback on Condoms and lube!! Tightarses! (I guess they need the lube for themselves!)

  • +2

    Condoms and lube

Why would that be excluded? Think of all the guys who buy bulk condoms!!!

    • +6

Protection = less population = less Costco customers / other bulk purchases.

    • +4

Wait….Costco sells bulk lube? Why have I never seen this in my visits.

  • NGL,
Costco is overpriced for bulk goods and an apparent 'membership' scheme.

If they didn't sell memberships making everyone think that it was a privilege to shop there i'd debate if they'd still have a business model.

    • True, it just the false security same as Officeworks, Bunnings who try to advertise their prices are always cheaper.
It always pays to shop around. Then again, I have saved a lot from some of Costco products compare to other retailers.

It depends on what you are buying. Especially when on special their prices are cheaper for name brand electrical and homewares. With bulk goods it depends on what you are buying and people should, always, double check prices before buying things. Generally the Costco quality is good. Depending on when you shop there are lots of tastings. Alcohol can be well priced too. The real kicker is the returns policy. If you don’t like it take it back.

I get my money’s worth out of Costco but I don’t, blindly, shop there either.

It has nothing to do with “privilege”, anyone can get a membership.

  • I’ve watched people put $1,000 through the till. It won’t take much for some people.

  • Whenever I go to Costco and see people with trolleys full of food I always wonder how much of it (if any) that they end up throwing out.

If they wanna have something good, it should have been effing this…
